I did my internship with the forest service. Half my job was to hike around the rockies and put up the signs mentioned in the story. Mostly just using topo maps. I did break the rules once or twice and ventures into a few of the mines but the stories of experienced mine explores just dropping dead after walking into a pocket of toxic or unbreakable gas kept me out of most of them. I didn't see any demons but still one of the funnest jobs I've ever had 😁

Finally, a somewhat secret organization that is good.
I like this story due to the meaning of it because people die everyday due to them exploring abandoned mines
If it was a secret, why did the ranger tell him all that.
This could be a great movie
And to think, if they had applied the art of minding their own business, none of that would have happened.

Yooo that town in the beginning is called moonville and the city is hocking county. I live in Ohio and it’s about a two hour drive from where I live. Shits awesome, I never been to the abandoned town but there’s a tunnel called the moonville tunnel and it’s a pretty popular tourist attraction.
Also the park is hocking hills national park

I'll never understand how I'm supposed to root for these characters. You ignore every rule and warning and invade this creature's home, you kill one of it's babies for absolutely no reason, and then all of a sudden it's evil for wanting you dead and I'm supposed to be glad you made it out alive?
I wasn't too mad at the start as I know my own curiosity... but messing with the nest and smashing the egg did it for me.
Same way we kill bears or wolves when someone takes a baby and mom gets revenge. When that happens because of a flood, tornado, etc it's an act of God. Let's have some parity, if you get gotted by something whose territory you invaded, call it an act of Nature

The thing was coming for his friend as soon as the sun set. They never would have made it in time had he carried him.

As a Miner, working underground for 4 years. I can tell you from experience that it is easy to get lost and turned around.

MrCreepyPasta did quite a few park ranger stories. I'd highly recommend them. I think there's one called "the stairs" that's pretty good if I remember correctly.

Southern Ohio? I live there, they must be exploring the abandoned, flooded lime stone mines. There’ll probably referring to Wayne National Forest when they say “the national forest”. I wonder if they are referring to Ohio University south, I don’t know if any ghost towns in the woods.

Clever how the author changed the name of the village to Paytonville. Based on the pictures and my own personal experiences, I’m pretty sure the author was in the Haydenville Tunnel.

Why the hell would you throw the egg, the way better courses of action are to show it to it, and put it back, if it is a defensive creature it would probably get worried but inspect it and find out it is not hurt and be more preoccupied with the egg and maybe if there is anything else possibly damaged than the invasors who left without causing known damage, sure it'd be horrifying to see it watching you but that's all the more reason your instincts would be on the lookout of how not to set it off to chase you, or to bring it with you and then turn around obviously and put it on a visible ledge, the monster would be too preocuppied with recovering it's baby to care about chasing (this is in the misfortunate case that you forgot to put the egg back, there is no good reason to bring the egg)
If a creature acts like an animal, then exploit it, don't do the exact same thing that'd piss off an average animal

Forest rangers constantly have to babysit idiots charging into a mothman lair, grabbing their eggs and giving a Gordon Ramsay "THIS EGG IS FUCKING RAAAAWWW!" before a forceful yeet then in turn cause the rangers more grief and undo hassle. Rangers deserve as much credit as war veterans i reckon

I live in that part of Ohio, the mines aren't all too plentiful, but they have infiltrated caves before and it's possible they connect deep below ground. Even probable.

Oh damn, I grew up not more than 2-3 miles from an enormous National Forest, and used to go riding on ATVs all the time in it. Makes me wonder if I just never saw anything, or it just never saw me?

I live in Southern Ohio, and have never wanted to go n2 an old coal mine. No way would I ever do that. We do like to go 4 wheeler riding on coal mine land tho. There was an accident where someone was showing off and rear ended another 4 wheeler. Noone got hurt real bad but we did have to call for a squad so we got caught and got trespassing charges on about 15 of us. Haven't been back to that place since.
I'm thinking maybe this story is based in Athens, Nelsonville, or Logan. Athens has Ohio University and Hocking County has Old Man's Cave a state park.
