Normally when you listen to scary tales, you expect to be unable to sleep calmly for the night. For me though, this is like bedtime stories, puts me straight to sleep. Keep it up, and my insomnia will be gone in no time

I have a feeling that certan things at the arcade are either hints to earn points in the game, or directly linked to it. The weird prize cabinet has all those unusual items including the rather odd exit sign at the very top for 10,000 tickets. Then you have things like the claw machine filled with unhappy plushes of animated people. Also the posters and arcade games that were different to the original counter parts.
In the end I think the reason OP never heard of anyone on the score board is because they never actually left the game. King must have figured it out but fell just short of that last point. Infact probably you could spend points to help improve your point pregression. Things like the focus glasses give that impression when the OP mentions that the climbing was taking alot a focus. OP may needed to do alot both in the arcade and the digital relm to earn points.
And what happens to those that fail to leave? Look at what is in the claw machine...
Perhaps OP was just lucky to have figured out the grey dot so early on in his adventure, as it sounded like he was in fact trapped in the game for longer than he realised. After a long time in the game I imagine it is difficult to focus.
Your idea makes sense as maybe that's why the game allows you to escape into the arcade but never actually leave... :)

I like to imagine these as live actions. I bet this one would be chalk full of Easter eggs from other creepypastas, maybe some of the prizes could be Slenderman plushies, or maybe a Jeff the Killer mask.

Imagine remembering when atari, coleco vision, and odyssey consoles were top of the line advanced software. I do. Had all 3 systems. Lol
I wish game consoles had the same impact when a new version came out, as they did when I was a kid. The difference between Super Nintendo and N64, and then again the difference between N64 and GameCube. I remember upgrading my 360 to the one and it was cool and all, but felt more like an upgraded 360 than an entirely new console. The latest versions of consoles I haven’t even touched. Maybe I’ll get a ps5 eventually, but currently most of the games coming out on console I can play on my gaming pc, so why bother… Sorry for the trail off lol but yeah hearing GameCube and retro in the same sentence stings
@Jaymennn im with you there. The increased price for a barely remodded system is insane. Even the new games are just glorified expansion packs they could sell them as skins or equip packs and have the same effect.

Excellent story...wish he had mentioned the time that had passed in reality while he was lost in the game.
The real Polybius was an Eastern European title called "Labyrinth".
Due to localisation issues it was renamed to "Death Maze".
It was a first-person maze game with wireframe vector graphics.
The polybius square features heavily within puzzles you find in the game.
This is the real reason it was incorrectly cited as "Polybius".
Due to the aforementioned issues its original name could not be used in print.
As a stand in Polybius was chosen as a nickname.
This is because the Polybius square feature was rather unique.
Anyone who had the selection of games to look through,
would be able to identify which it refers to by that clue.
There's nothing weird or supernatural about the game really.
During the Vietnam war low IQ individuals were forceably drafted.
This backfired immensely for the US.
Labyrinth was to test the problem-solving skills of the younger generation.
Data was collected anonymously from arcades to form a national average.
As expected the sudden reduction in low IQ's had boosted the score.
Unfortunately it wasn't a significant increase.
Think about it, those with low mental faculty aren't going to breed too well.
Vietnam was an even bigger failure than anyone could have guessed.
It didn't even reduce the number of people on unemployment pay.
It drastically increased it in fact.
Failure all round.
The clincher was obvious to anyone with any real common sense.
None of the people who were unemployed had been involved in the test.
If money is slim, you're not exactly going to spend it in the arcades.
This meant the results were completely useless anyway.
The game had no hypnotic effects.
It did cause motion sickness, but so did every first-person game then.
You lost "lives" by failing the puzzles.
Theoretically someone smart need only pay once to finish the game.
A bunch of people with more egos than sense became obsessed.
Ironically these were low-IQ jock types.
They had overwhelming jealousy over being beaten at a game by nerds.
They wanted to prove to all their friends that they were better than "dorks".
It all goes into the government funds at the end of the day.

my favorite part was when polybius said "its morbing time" and committed tax fraud.
I've actually played Polybius one time. It was a very colorful and kinda weird game, but still seemed like just a regular game to me. Nothing weird happened to me while playing it, but it was kinda trippy and there were a lot of rapidly flashing colors and bright light. I highly recommend against playing it for anyone with epilepsy because if Polybius doesn't trigger a seizure nothing else will. Anyway nice story and a great narration.👍👍
The real game in real life never existed, not until a fan created his version of the myth in 2006. The one created after the myth is also not at all like the one spoken about in the myth.

My buddy and I found a Polybius cabinet in a weird little arcade outside of Las Vegas. Nothing weird happened to us, except for when the ceiling came down from the Sumo wrestling school upstairs. Broke a few of my friend's bones...no biggie.

It never explained what caused the score to go up. I listened to this once and thought it did, but on this second listen, no, it never mentioned what "score" meant. I can't blame dude for not playing again and trying to find out, but…it just adds to the mystery, you know?

You can play this game on steam. It's called polybius invaders. Says it's a 1979 game. But it says it released October 3rd 2021. Has not had any reviews since October of 2021. Only 5 people reviewed the game in October of 2021.

@@revaslatts4301 I stand corrected. I did some research& it is even avalible for sale. That's scary!! I have been playing video arcade games since 1984. I even got to level 50 on road blasters. Even worked in an arcade b4 for a really long time,as an assistant manager. Had never heard of polybius,is all. P.S. it is illegal to have the cords all over the floors. That part was obviously made up,in the story..No one would risk the safety code violation fines for hundreds of cords all over the floor where people trip, fall& families suing said establishment.

The buildup to him finaly finding the game is a slow, droning, painful excercise attempting to cram in as many video game myths and legends as possible. When he does finaly find a game, it is useless fodder to fill time. If only some of these authors could find themselves in a creative environment to come up with these stories, they would be infinately more entertaining. Sad really, as I used to enjoy creepypastas. By the way, the word in the title should be "occursed"...
