A stroopwafel is definitely not breakfast food, though I suppose some students might treat it like that. Probably in combination with a can of redbull or something.
😄 that sounds about right! Either way it's delicious but we've heard it's a lot better fresh. So we definitely need to try it again!
@@JordanandEmily Yes, fresh is SO much better. I never really liked them until I had a fresh made one one day.
Neejoh studenten gaan voor frikandel broodje met blikje huismerk energy van de appie 😂
@@DJ-cl3io Nee, dat zijn scholieren
Everything is breakfast food if there is nothing else in the house
Cheese ageing is counted in months, better to say: aged 24 months then 'two years old' that was really funny! And yes, the Dutch have really good matured cheeses, and I'm a Frenchman saying this 😀
Hahaha, good to know, 24 months does sound a lot better!
As a Dutch person i never understand how people don’t like raw herring. Maybe you guys should try it more, it grows on you i promise 😉
Can 100% see this happening! It was so much better than expected - we even finished the whole thing! Definitely liked it better with the pickles and onion though 😊
@@JordanandEmily the secret to having a nice herring is it needs to be redish in the inside and grey on the out not white (else they old) and always take a small one caude they are soft big ones are hard xD
As a dutch person i never understood how people like them. I'm not against seafood cause i like a lot of them but herring is just a no go for me
It's definitely regional, I don't do herring in any form.
Yes. And as a Dutch person, I also never seen herring served with pickles...(??) The Dutch serve salted herring either with or without onions.
I lived in Rotterdam as a young boy in the ‘50s and remember those local delicacies. I loved chocolate sandwiches, puffages and those deep fried balls with mustard sauce. 😋
mmmmmm so Delicious!
I think you listed my top 3 favourites haha
New favourite Dutch food unlocked - Bitterballen is so dang good 🤤🤤
First thing I do when I land at Schiphol is find the nearest Febo or cafe that has bitterballen/krokets. I don't feel 'at home' until I do.
GEKOLONISEERD (COLONISED)
@@CedBuys ???
@@spoonwinnipeg2021 "Gekoloniseerd" is a dumb Gen Z joke which is popular amongst young Dutch people.
Due to their woke brain-washing at school and college they believe anything Dutch is colonized and therefore racist or something.
I don't know, because i myself love my country and culture and have an actual sense of humor.
@@remc0s I am proudly a citizen of two countries. I love them both, but that doesn't mean I don't recognise both of their racist Colonial histories.
I guess my having a sense of humour but still consider myself woke (not an insult, by the way) just means that I don't find racism funny, y'know like you do.
Great to see you enjoying the food. Have a great travel / holiday!
Thank you! 😊
Next time you're in Haarlem go to the Jopenkerk, it's an old church converted to a brewery with a pub inside, real good food as well!
Wow! Thanks for the recommendation! Sounds awesome 😊
Lovely couple! Enjoy your day guys and stay safe
Thank you so much Suay!
Im from haarlem, im happily supriced to see this was a vlog in my town
It's a really gorgeous town, we couldn't resist!
For the Rookworst you should visit the Hema shop in the city centers. They have the best and famous Hema Worst is there own brand of Rookworst and they sell it also warm so you can eat it there and then.
It is delicious like a it is with mustard, but also great on a bun with mustard.
That honestly sounds delicious. Next time we are in the area we will definitely be tr ying that! Thanks! 😊
Great clip, and a great spijkerbroek at 7:55. You rock girl!

So nice to see my hometown this way and to watch you guys enjoy Haarlem. If you ever go back there is so much more to see and you also can go to the beach "Zandvoort" its not far from Haarlem City. Or do a "rondje Haarlem - round of Haarlem tour" by bike. Greetings 🇱🇺🙋🏽♀️
P.S. Fresh made stroopwafels are so jummy, you can find the stand on de market en also the have little bags with crumbles in it, my fav!
mmmmm stroopwaffles! it's probably good we left or we would have been eating a packet a day each. Really want to try the proper fresh ones!
Haarlem was so great, we know there is more to see and want to get back there one day, its the perfect Netherlands city for is!
yeah but keep in mind that zandvoort beach is crazy busy, so i recommend other beaches
I used to live in Haarlem but I left the Netherlands and Haarlem a little over fourteen years ago to go live in Greece.
Some of the things you tried made me realise I actually do miss these, especially the herring (which is probably an acquired taste) and the "overjarige Friese Nagelkaas" (overly matured Fresian clove-cheese).
Things like bitterballen we've learned to make ourselves and the clove cheese friends bring when they come visit.
How amazing!
We actually enjoyed the Herring a lot more than we expected - can understand why people love it
Sounds like you have great friends bringing you the goodies when they visit ❤️
We moved from the Netherlands to Curaçao. Besides all the good snacks of Curaçao you can get ALL the goodies from the Netherlands here. Kibbeling and herring on Friday at the local supermarket, all the stuff from AH at Van Tweel supermarket... we even offer our B&B-guests all these snacks to taste the Netherlands and Curaçao.
I’m glad you enjoyed our new hometown! We moved here in 2018 and now can’t imagine living anywhere else.
Its so beautiful there! Can see the appeal 😍
Haarlem is a beautiful town with its own history. how nice of you. I was born en raised here. still living i Haarlem 😃😃. grote markt is was.say markt 😃😃👍👍👏👏👏
amazing! We had such a great few days there ☺️
I am from Haarlem! Lovely to see my city from a tourist view. I visit these places on your video all the time. Oliebollen are considered a new year snack so after new year a lot of places stop selling them. There are a few that stay our selling them for a longer period in winter though. I actually love drop and can’t believe people don’t like it😂 but as mentioned by others most people dont like all kinds of drop but have preferances towards certain types and you really picked yourself a brutal type of drop on a first try 🤣 You should alto try visiting Zandvoort and eat some kibbeling at the sea!
Oliebollen, it has two sales-periods though generally, when there 'kermis' comes to town and New Years. At least, that's over here in Nijmegen.
How interesting that Oliebollen is a seasonal thing! We had no idea
Oh my gosh still can’t get over the drop 😂 was a pure shock to the system! 😅😅
Thanks for the recommendations - I’ve added them to our list!
As a Dutch, you made the right choice going to Haarlem. Nice beautiful city, not too crowded for visiting (except in the weekends haha) and beautiful buildings. I like to go there myself quite often. What are your plans for the next trip?
It really was the perfect spot for us!
We aren’t sure yet! Would love to come back to Netherlands and explore more of the countryside - do you have any recommendations?
Haha, it never gets old to see foreigners try "drop". And the salty one, was not even the saltiest you can buy. What you got, is "DZ" Dubbel Zout (Double Salt). I just had triple salt "drop". Delicious! Good to see the place I have grown up in again. I would not want to live there anymore (too expensive, too impractical) but I still long for the surroundings of Haarlem. Within 15 minutes of biking either way you come in medeival "polders" with old village and river landscape or in the dunes, with forest and wildlife.
I honestly can't believe it gets saltier! Haha
Double salt was intense.
We know what you mean, Haarlem is beautiful and has it all but if you need to work outside of Harleem we can see how it would become difficult!
When we as kids were ever sick with a sore throat, cough or cold, my Oma would dissolve 'dubbel zoute drop' in water and we'd drink it like tea. Works like a charm but it's not for everyone
Its a hazing ritual for my family to get anyone's new partner to try double zoet drupjes and watch their facial expression. Classic.
Loved the raw herring at 9am joke JD! What a crack up 🤣
Thanks mate, thought you'd like it! XD
As of someone who lives and was born in Haarlem i can say goodjob you saw alot of great things about our city
thank you so much!
great food! lovely couple!, and i really like your sandals emily! simple but refined..
Thank you so much! I love those sandals - they broke not long after this though 😭😅
it is fun to see my own neighborhood in a video and that those people find everything special.

Mmmmmm we've heard that, we have left already and are kicking ourselves that we didn't get to try them. Definitely first on the list when we come back!
Glad you are the first to do this kind of videos, really you have a scoop.
That look on your face!! When you try de dz drop😂😂 im dying❤❤
hahaha wasn't expecting that!
Did you know the herring is actually fermented? When they’re caught at sea the fishermen cut away all the intestines/guts and the gills except for the pancreas.
The enzymes in the pancreas make the herring ferment. At a certain point the fish gets brined. This whole process gives the fish its typical taste.
What! Nope, we had no idea at all. That's a very cool fact and honestly makes me want to try it again but the proper way! (All at once!)

When you visit the Netherlands an other time forget the terrible herring, try the stunning "kibbelling" or "lekkerbek" it's fried white fish with an awesome sauce, check other RUclipsrs what they think about it, why not fries with mayonnaise and curry ketchup, so good.
Did you visit the Bavo Church at the market, if not check the world famous Muller organ, it's facade is mind blowing and probably the most famous in the world.
Good few things to add to the list for next time, thanks! We think we did have a curry sauce on our fries! Definitely tasted like it 😄
My parents are from Holland I was born in America. Dutch food is lovely. I always have bitter balls in the freezer ready to go! One of my most favorite things!
@@ritawashere5787
As a Dutchie I love the "bitterballen" and "kroketten" as well and all sorts of licorice (drop), but don't like the raw herring and some sorts of cheese.
Salt licorice is a bad thing for your blood pressure 😉 but we Dutch love it. 😁
Dutch cuisine isn't the highest level but the normal daily kitchen is perfect for me, I eat a lot of "andijvie", "bloemkool", "kroten/rode bietjes", "spinazie", "hutspot", all sorts of "bonen", "boerenkool", "spruitjes", and a lot more, all these dishes with potatoes and some good meat and brown gravy taste awesome. I hope you still know the Dutch names of the veggies. 😊
@@ytfan3815 oh yes, cheese is a given! Gouda is my favorite. Love Edom and brick. Funny when the grocery stores in America started selling gouda. It's not Gooba. Such a let-down.
If you like Haarlem, you will probably like Deventer aswell. Nice old architecture and arguably the most beautiful square in the Netherlands (Brink). Only about an hour train ride from Amsterdam. 😉
Thanks for the recommendation!! Added it to our list for next time 😊❤️
Haarlem is a wonderful city, it’s a bit like a mini Amsterdam (as architecture goes), but way less crowded, better maintained, way better atmosphere.
How don’t you know what stroopwafels are? Even delta or united served it on their flights ;)
Hagelslag is indeed chocolate sprinkles, together on bread or toast with full cream butter (our butter is also top notch) it’s fantastic.
Poffertjes are pronounced as Pof-ver-tjes
About the herring/haring…people freak out…yet eat sushi. It’s the same thing people. It needs to be fresh…although it really isn’t because it’s pickled in salt. It needs to be fatty, not too fishy (yes it’s fish, but you get it).
But the onions really make it nice, just little bite to it.
Bitterballen are small croquettes (sorry French people, it’s more Dutch than French) filled with rough and meat. Goes great with mustard.
Next time when taking fries…take it with sate/peanut sauce. Or a combo of mayonaise/saté and onions. It’s called patatje oorlog aka war Fries. The savoury peanut flavour, combined with the creamy mayonnaise and sharp onions is always a win.
Edit; editing the comment as the video goes
Thanks for all this! 😊 where did you fall regarding pickles with the herring? Seems that some regions love it and other don't 😄
@@JordanandEmily pickling fish; by preserving it in sometype of brine which kills certain micro-organisms and make it more safe to eat than normal raw fish
@@JordanandEmily in the North of the Netherlands, you can't eat haring with pickels, if you do that, people keep staring at you like what are you doing?. I live in Haarlem and I grew up there, it's beautiful. When I saw you in this video, I knew the whole time where you were
@@JordanandEmily it is in all the Netherlands but more populair at the fishing city's like Volendam.
They’re southerners….. don’t hear too much about stroopwafels or much other European stuff outside of Britain where they’re from

The pickle with the haring and onions is new for me, but actually a genius addative to make the fatty and ealy taste a bit less extreme for new comers.
agreed! Definitely liked it more with the onion and pickles
Hi there,
Well haring: Any day, any time for me. You can even wake me up for this in the middle of the night.
About the stroopwavels: the best way to taste them is when you buy them also at a market, freshly baked and warm.
And if ypu're still going for the rookworst later on, then I suggest you buy it at the Hema. The best in town (country).
Enjoy your stay in the Netherlands and save travels in the future
Thank you so much! 😊 we will keep an eye out if we can get to Hema!

Of course I subscribed. I was just having my coffee with a stroopwafel when I started watching this video. To my surprise it was also in Haarlem which i'm from. In fact you two were eating bitterballen 50 meters from my house. I have the feeling you two have tricked me in subscribing, lol.
Oh my gosh lol! That's too many coincidences!! 😅 Haarlem is such an awesome place
@@JordanandEmily Thank you, b.t.w. i'm not disappointed subscribing. You two make nice videos. Have a nice day : )
DZ stands for double Salty. Dubbel Zout. Love it!
Oh that makes sense! You do?! It was a total shock to my system 🤯🤣
As a Norwegian. We seem to have have the same food culture. We eat raw fish too and (black) liquorice. And fermented fish as well. Among other foods that may seem strange to the rest of the world.
Do you like the salty liquorice? I can still taste it 🤣
Lived for most of my life in Haarlem, born and raised there. Moved away for a bit but currently live there again. The old city centre is very recognizable :) I do not like double salt (DZ) ones either and very much dislike 'haring'. There are plenty of 'Dutch' things one could try. And if sticking to the Haarlem theme, why not try Droste Chocolate. The factory used to be there. During this time of year one might find Chocolate letters as in a M, S, D, or any one available. Of course it can be of any other brand but I liked the one from my home city most.
A few more things you could try are:
Gevulde koeken
Roze koeken
Febo kroketten (there are plenty of others but I personally like those of that brand most myself)
Amazing!! Thank you so much for the recommendations
We absolutely loved Haarlem - so happy we timed up being there for the market as well!
Also, glad I’m not alone in not liking the salty liquorice 😂😂
Raw herring is basically like the Dutch version of sushi! If it's fresh it's delicious, and healthy my Dutch wife loves to say. It's a fatty fish, so lots of calories and flavor. I eat mine in a sandwich style (broodje haring) with onions and pickles. It's worth noting that although Dutch people call their pickles sour, they are not. They are more sweet than sour, definitely not like American burger pickles. On a herring sandwich they work pretty well!
ooh - might have to try the broodje haring next time! It was honestly WAY better than we expected and can totally understand the obsession
Poffertjes and Bitterballen, definetely my favorites. and thick Dutch-Belgian fries
completely agree! Poffertjes are delicious 🤤
the DZ on the really salty liquorice stand for 'dubbel zout', meaning double salty.
Oh! Thanks for letting us know - that makes so much sense 🤣
Very great video and I am curious I thought Stroop waffle was with vanilla ice cream. And I always wondered about fairy bread isn't that a australian thing. The simple things in life r better than fancy it seems 😃
I think there a few different kinds of stroopwaffel so you could be right! But the ones we found all had caramel 😀 fairy bread is amazing haha and I think Australian!
@@JordanandEmily thanks I'm sure there is a couple different versions of a stroopwaffle. It looks like a waffle cone with caramel on top of the vanilla ice cream so I wasn't sure that I've seen it before correctly
@@JustinBrehm the waffle with ice cream is from Belgium, it is the Brussels waffle.
Dutchy here: there is no stroopwafel with vanilla ice cream. Stroopwafels are always with caramel inside.
@@JordanandEmily Stroop in the word stroopwafel is Apple syrup made of Apple's, like there is mayple syrup. We put stroop om our bread and if put on white bread you easily eat 6 or 7 sandwiches it is addictting. I am sure there are stroopwafels with stroop in, but more people like caramel. I know a couple who does the most crazy experiments with flavours of stroopwafels, most Dutch people dont even know. I also know there is a stroopwafel food truck in Australia, but dont know in which city.
Everything is delicious .
apart from the liquorice 🤯
Thank you I have always wanted to go!
It was amazing!
I do living between the big cities, Amsterdam and Haarlem, but Haarlem is my favorite, just like Leiden…
It is an awesome city! A perfect size in my opinion 😊
Ahhh bitterballen are my favorite. So tasty!!
So so good!
You're lucky, raw herring is extra fat this year, it is tastier than ever before.
Because of covid there was less fish catching, so now it is amazing.
Glad we timed it so well! I think we need to give it another go!
Wow a Jamin that still has a wide range of Dutch candy. Some just have a small range and mostly imported USA and Japanese candy&snacks
There's more types of ditch candy? Are they as salty as the one we tried? 😄
@@JordanandEmily yes there is ad it's sweet
The last one Speculaas, we did them also on bread.
Really?! Like a cookie sandwich? 😅
@@JordanandEmily Try it, with 2 on bread to decorate your bread, 1 with a windmill, other with flowers, people or something else. There are also Schuddebuikjes for on bread, is also speculaas, but they are very little
Pickled herring is mostly done in Amsterdam, there they also cut the fish in pièces. I think they cut in pieced for the tourists, because most towns they take the herring by the tale and bit pièces of it. I saw one tourist stuff it all in once in his mouth, never do that eating herring for the first time. I had a Canadian guy try herring at the fish shop, he liked it. The owner got word of a Canadian liking his herring and gave us a tour in the back of the shop and gave us all herrings for free. The Canadian said it was, because of my charisma. I said hell no, a foreigner that likes herring and asks for more herring is an anamoly lol. I heard some Americans starting to like herring, it can grow on you, dark liqueorice is a bit harder to get used too. It is a taste you learn to aprecitate as a child.
Ahahahah trying to eat the whole thing at once is adventurous 😄 we've been told that cutting it up isn't technically the traditional way so we are definitely hanging it by the tail next time!!
@@JordanandEmily Will there be a next time for herring or dark liqueorice? Lol. People who like sushi are often the ones who can tolerate or like herring. It is not really raw it is treated, salted and bit fermented. "Surstromming" what the Swedes do is basically rotten herring in a tin box. It is the smelliest food in the world and it is forbidden to open in public places, because the fire departement could be called thinking it is a gas leak. RUclips has lots of Surstromming challenges. We eat Filet American on small toast at birtdays and parties that is raw meat and is delicous, they sell it raw because no one has ever got sick from it. I think they do give it some kind of treatment to kill the germs. Most Dutch people love Filet Americain. Has nothing to do with America by the way.
@@2012inca I (Emily) would happily eat the herring again - preferably with onions an pickles! but not sure I would choose to do the liquorice again 😂 Surstromming does not sound fun haha - have you even had it?
@@JordanandEmily I saw birds in the canal next to my house not eating / ignoring rotten fish for a reason. Swedes say Surstromming is fermented fish in a tin that is about to explode from the built up gasses, but it is rotten fish that hangs of thin shreads that keep it together. Lot of Swedes do Sursromming on toast I believe with something like a spread on it. Much like Australians have that brown spread on toast what lot of foreigners dont like. Marmite I believe it is called, foreigners dont know you dont take a lot of marmite on your toast just a little bit. Just watch Surstrommjng challenges on RUclips, people are gagging already after opening the tin can. Steve O from Jackass would love a disgusting Surstromming challenge I am sure. Steve O is collecting pee from lots of people in buckets now, dont want to know what he is going to do with it. So Surstromming would be right up his alley. P.s. Some people learn to eat even salty liqurourice, the Swedes like it it too. There are also half fruit / half dark liqueorice candys. Hardcore people eat herring without anything, but eat too much herring you will burp uo the taste all day, I know from bad experience. .
Omg I’ve been in that exact spot lately!!
No way! how did you like it? ☺️
3:20 That's not the cathedral, though there is one in Haarlem, dedicated to the same saint, Bavo.
In the same shot you see the statue of Laurens Janszoon Coster, claimed (by some) to have invented printing.
When the camera swings around, you get a shot of City Hall, where used to be a residence of the counts of Holland.
Haarlem was first mentioned in preserved writings in the 10th century and is several centuries older than Amsterdam.
Thanks for all the info! :)
Never bite into a bitterbal or kroket right away because they are steaming hot inside. Nice video!
They are sooo hot! Lesson learned 😄
But they are delicious. Cannot wait to get back to the Netherlands for more bitterballen!
Verader!!!
@@JordanandEmily try kaassouffle. With melted cheese on the inside
Nice tour! But you made 2 mistakes I'm afraid. You should have bought the stroopwafels at the market. They are made before your very eyes and taste so much better when they're fresh!!! Other thing is patat. In the Netherlands people eat their fries with mayonaise. Or with mayonaise, warm peanutsauce and onions and call it patatje oorlog (oorlog means war. Don't ask...)
Whoops! We did finally have a fresh strop waffle in Lithuania at a Christmas market and OMG it was incredible!
Vis moet zwemmen. (Fish has to swim). That's to say, eating fish, you have to drink something, like a refreshing beer. The herrings aren't really raw: they are gutted and pickled. But that makes them very salty, of course, so it is best with a drink.
I myself don't care too much about the onions, they only make you more thirsty, and don't taste good when they're not freshly cut. Also, only the 'nieuwe haring', that is, freshly caught at the start of the fishing season, is really good.
Edit: Even better is the smoked eel, eaten slightly above room temperature. (my grandma would put them on an iron plate on top of their heater for a little bit)
Fish has to swim is such a good saying!
Never eating fish without a beer or wine again!
I never knew pickles were used until I went to Amsterdam (and now apparently Haarlem). I used to live in Utrecht and it was just Herring and onions, and here in the east of the country (Doetinchem), too. Maybe pickles is a North-Holland thing?
Could be! We didn't get to experience much more of netherlands unfortunately because our budget was being hurt too bad! But one day we'll be back to verify! 😉
It’s called ‘zuur’ (sour) with your herring. Some people eat it with pickles and onions.
The chocolate sprinkles use to be popular here. Haven't seen them for a very long time. Aldi has some of these foods at times
Love those chocolate sprinkles! are you in the Netherlands? we saw them in every shop!
Found them at last.
I see the sugary ones a lot in Holland vids.

What is that weird gravy like sauce on the fries? Is that a haarlem thing?
The traditional dutch way is with mayonaise.
I like it with mayonaise, chopped onions and warm peanut sauce ( patatje oorlog, war fries)
But i would def like to try that sauce you’re having.
Believe it was like a curry sauce!
Definitely a fan of the mayonnaise too 😅

I like your video. You have a good vibe together. Too bad bloggers usually taste the sweets and snacks. Most traditional Dutch meals are winter meals, so I understand it though. I think tourists should try fresh erwtensoep (split peas soup) and stamppot (mashed potatoes with vegetables like curly cale or sauerkraut).
A traditional Dutch meal is a piece of meat, with boiled vegetables and boiled potatoes (all hardly seasoned). It is not popular anymore, but have been replaced by international dishes.
We are not proud of our colonisation history, but right now we have amazing Surinam and Indonesian food in the Netherlands. Next time you should try Surinam roti and Indonesian rendang (braised beef with coconut milk).
Enjoy the rest of your travels!
Thank you so much!
Ooh Stamppot and Erwtensoep sounds delicious, will definitely have to add these to the list when we come back (hopefully!)
@@JordanandEmily this kind of "street food" isn't "Dutch food", it's been marketed because everyone does these nonsensical and repetitive Dutch street food videos. I was hoping for something more original, but alas.
@@urbandiscount They are on basically every list we saw when we googled ‘Dutch foods to try!’
If you have any recommendations that’d be amazing 😊
Maybe don't do "streetfood" videos? Literally everyone with a "we came to NL" channel has the exact same thing
@@urbandiscount the thing is that traditional Dutch food isn't something you'd come across in a restaurant often. Some might have it but things like an "AGV'tje" (aardappelen, groente, vlees) isn't something a restaurant would usually serve.
0:44 I am Dutch and this is not totally true. Some prefer to do this, but some definitely not as this makes the stroopwafel less crunchy and the feeling that the stroopwafel is not fresh. The best way is not to place it on your cup of coffee or tea, but just buy a fresh one from a booth.
We missed out on fresh ones unfortunately 😫 good excuse to go back haha!
Ooh I can definitely see both sides of the coin on this! The crunch is amazing but having the insides all gooey is delish - how do you choose?! 😂
@@JordanandEmily How I choose? Not. Just eat two.
Without joking, good to hear you see both sides of the coi..stroopwafel!
@@AeolusCapital 😂 now this is the kind of solution I can get behind!
As a dutch person i love to watch this video i grew up eating zoute drop its addicting i can eat a whole bag😂
Oh my gosh! I let would be my torture 😂 but to be fair put a jar of Vegemite in front of me and I’ll be happy as Larry but I know foreigners don’t like it 😅
drop is black gold :) delicious , but probable to love it you must be born in Holland to do that :)
Hahaha 😆 you might be right. Jordan ended up liking them but he has dutch heritage so maybe that helps 😄
How could you not have tried the best of all Dutch national foods...... Smoked Eels !
😳What! how did we not hear of this. We like everything with a smokey flavour aaaand have never had eel, what could go wrong!
@@JordanandEmily then look for the smoked wild eel like IJsselmeerpaling
Mmmmmm
The cultivated eel is much to fat
Gotta love haarlem
its awesome!!
As a Dutchman, i dont like double salt drop.. brrr shivers down my spine. every other flavour is yummo.
😄 agreed!
Lekker!!
It really was - think our favourites were Bitterballen and Poffertjes!
We finally got to try fresh stroopwaffles at a christmas market in Lithuania and oh my gosh they are even better!! 🤤
@@JordanandEmily Fresh ones are the best!! Bitterballen and Pofferjes are awesome too!
The mustard sauce is not sauce, it i just plane mustard as we know it....But it is great and the ricght one for bitterballs...great vid thanks!
Whatever it was it was incredible haha, we still think about those bitterballs almost daily. Excited to get back there and have them again 😄
Another one for the looooong list😉😅. Kapsalon!
Translates to barbershop! It’s so good. Has everything one might need. Fries, meat, cheese, lettuce, sauce, tomato and onion. Headsup - it’s definitely a full meal on its own.
Woah woah woah, that sounds amazing. Is it in like a bread bun or something?
@@JordanandEmily Kapsalon comes in a plastic or cardboard little box, but is definetly a full meel..
@@2012inca it's in aluminum normally, plastic would melt under a broiler and paper would catch fire
You forgot garlicsauce
Pindasaus (Not pindakaas) is so much better with fries in my eyes. But going more Dutch would be a patatje oorlog or with mayonaise or joppiesaus in my eyes.
Now I wanted to say chips. Maybe not totally dutch but maybe also an idea that I came up with suddenly yet again. Dutch Lays Paprika chips with a sauce called "dipsaus carnaval". (it will explain itself how to make it). Really a good snack like cheese and wine. (BTW I do not like cheese/wine) It also taste good with cucumber that sauce.
Would have to say from the dips we have tried Mayo is always a winner in my books!
if you ever come to The Netherlands again, try: halve worst', you can ask for hot dog sauce or mustard. it’s like a big hot dog without the bread
You can try it by: Hema
sounds awesome - thanks for the tip!
it was actually on their list already as 'rookworst', Hema is probably the best known for having a warm rookworst as a snack. Been a while since I have one, should get one sometime soon.
@@NickyHendriks hema rookworst is beste
Hello two you
Have a good luck day my friend
Good video amazing yeah☺❤😊
Hello!! 👋 thank you so much - hope you are having a lovely day ❤️😊
you killed the hagelslag box 😞
Whoops 😂🤦♀️
Hummm ,,, Dutch foods are absolutely yummy,, herrlijk lekker,,!
Agreed!! So good
Is it cold in Netherlands even during summer season ?
It can be! 😂
But there are also times where it's very hot! just depends on the day!
Lol it has been 30-33 dgrs C this week.
yes and no. Usually it's a few days of hot weather followed by a week or so of mild weather.
It's now 1:55 am and because of this video i want some bitterballen 😢😅
😆 don't blame you at all!
@@JordanandEmily i just ate some bitterballen im happy😅
@@cianharingman6997 okay now I’m jealous 😂🤤🤤
@@JordanandEmily 😅 I'm sorry
The fresh stroopwafel is so much better than the one from AH or any supermarket.
We have heard this! And what's worse is that we had the chance to get it at the market but didn't! But it's honestly top of the list to try at the very next opportunity! 😄
@@JordanandEmily when your coming back to the Netherlands? Any plans yet😀 Also go more to the south to Maastricht ( Zuid Limburg) and try the very famous frietje Zuurvlees (home made) sometimes you stand 1 hour in line to get it but its really worth waiting for it😍 But yeah the fresh stroopwafel is bigger and so much more taste and because its fresh made and warm well thats one of the reasons that we have the happiest kids in the world 😜
Dankjewel voor je reactie 🧡 ( Thnx for your reaction).
@@GabberPinda We want to try and make it back through this year (Hopefully) we have the intention to try and find Christmas markets and that might take us to the netherlands again! If not, we hope ot make it back 2023! 😁We are happy to wait in line for an hour! that just means it must be delicious!!
10:20 Note, when I was young, fourty odd years ago, and food health was less of an issue, the DZ was really salty. I loved it. Today's DZ is more sweet than salty and therefore I don't like its bland taste.
There is also tripple salted now (3 dubbel zoute drop)
3 dubbel is crazy 😄 this one was definitely salty enough for us!
Herring! Good staff! Like in Poland. Must be yammee.
It actually was haha we didn't expect it! 😅
@@JordanandEmily I'm Polish so this type of preparating fish I like.
@@marcinklimas2670 we didn't get to try it in Poland 😞 we actually didn't get to do a food tour there at all. We will need to get back!
Nobody does, but really Dutch is going to the Hema, buy a half warm sausage.. especially in the winter
ooh - thanks for the recommendation!
They had Rookworst on the list but they didn't buy it. And in the Netherlands everybody has tasted the rookworst from the Hema. Oliebollen was also on the list but you can only find those in December.
wow dutch herring… i wanna try
You should! apparently we were eating it wrong though. You are supposed to hang it by its tail above you and eat it head first!
@@JordanandEmily omg it means i should eat in one bite? haha
@@user-ih7tk1xk6i hahaha thats what we thought at first but I think they like.. bite the head off 😄
Haarlem = the place to be!!!!
One of the best and most peaceful cities we've been to so far!
Concerning the liqourice, be glad you didn't try the salmiak-powder, that's even more hardcore :)
Hahah, you means there's even saltier things!? Insane. But our curiosity will get the better of us and we will have to try it 😄
@@JordanandEmily I don't know if you've been to any of the Scandinavian countries, ask for "salmiak or salmiakki" and "turkish pepper" (they'll know what you mean). Get ready to feel alive as much as your saliva-glands will feel alive, the instant you taste it 🤣
Thanks for sharing.
@02:08 have you made a reservation at a gym yet? You're gonna need it!
@06:40 That is the tourist way. Just grab a plain herring by the tail and let it slide into your mouth to bite a chunk of. That will give you taste.
@06:52 Well, I suppose you don't like sushi or sashimi either?
Hahaha all these food tours have certainly made us consider doing some more exercise!
We heard about just slipping the herring in but don't think we were ready for it... yet..
Don't know how to explain it, but we both love sushi 🍣 😋
One word, Stroopwafelicecream.😮
oh my gosh - I NEED to try this!
I think you took "patat" (Dutch fries) the wrong way: either with mayonnaise (the more tangy one, fritessaus), or with peanut sauce or sate sauce. Ketchup is not popular at all.
ooooh Mayonnaise sounds like the winner!
@@JordanandEmily yeah, anyhow there are 2 popular variants: "patatje oorlog" (French fries in war ?) which is mayonnaise (fritessaus) AND peanut sauce AND chopped onions, and "patat speciaal" where peanut sauce is replaced bij ketchup or similar. The peanut sauce is originating from the Indonesian kitchen as a sauce on skewers but many Dutch snackbars have dutchified the sauce. It tastes sometimes quite different.
@@TheoBerkhout we love fries so much we would end up eating them all haha what's your favourite? so we don't miss it!
I always think it's funny people have issues with "raw" herring, but eat sushi no problem.
Very true 😄 the little bones in the herring got me though!
@@JordanandEmily Next time try the Kibbeling. Lightly battered fried fish. Delicious! As a Dutchie I have to admit I ate haring once as was done with it too though lol
The only problem I have with raw herring is the taste. I just don't like it. I do like raw tuna and some others like mackerel.
@@jwenting honestly was kinda good with the onion and pickles but without is definitely not for us 😂
I used to eat easily 3 herrings one after another. It was a real treat for us at home, as they were expensive and I came from a large family. (Katwijk).
I will visit there soon! 🙂
Have fun!
Thanks for visiting Haarlem, being Dutch, I live here and my wife owns a store here. Being mostly into health food, i never eat hagelslag, chocolate falls heavy on the morning stomach and poffertjes and such should not be eaten as breakfast but mainly as a snack when you have already eaten something. I never ate this in the morning. Too many carbs as well : ) most my work colleagues nowadays eat more yoghurt cruesli fruits etc instead of this as breakfast
It's the better way to live I think, we've been trying to be slightly healthier as we continue on but we're not very good at it I'm afraid 😄
Can someone tell me how to make oliballen please and in English I can’t read Dutch anymore
Your guess is as good as ours! I hope somebody can comment back to help you!
Oliebollen. Flour, yeast, beer, a little salt (or just use a packet of oliebollen mix), some water until you have a thick pancakey dough. Let it rise. Add raisins and sliced apples if you want, maybe some cinnamon. Heat up a large pan of sunflower oil ( throw in a piece of bread to test the temperature) and use a wet ice scoop or two spoons to make balls of the dough (it does drip), scoop them in the oil. Turn them over until brown on all sides. Put a layer of kitchen paper in a large bowl. Scoop em in and let them cool a little. Then eat with lots of powdered sugar.
Funniest I think was my American friends being weirded out by hagelslag on bread but being fine with Nutella
that is odd! Aussies are probably not shocked cause we all grew up on fairy bread 🤣
