01:15 Best moment in 3DMark's history. The amount of graphics fidelity this demo was able to realize in the year 2001 was stunning.

Ah, the river and the trees. My favorite 15fps demo from when I was a teenager

I was born in 97 so I wasn't old enough to experience a lot the tech at the time but I did experience it later on and love the graphics style.

dude i love these! totally brings me back to the days of getting these on demo disks and barely able to run them but they were mind blowing still. Keep up the good work my dude!

The leap in software tech from 2000 to 2001 is really quite surprising.

PC's just 2-3 years old, could barely run the newest games. Late 90's to mid 00's was an extremely fast evolution in computing power.

the voodoo fx2 tickled my brain at the time, then shaders added a gen later, amazing leaps and good times.

This was the coolest test of them all IMO. I remember the Nature test specifically. Even the music dramtizes the murder which was about to happen to your hardware. It was so hard to run

17:00 that 'insert disk 2' was a nod to Demoscene, perhaps Amiga Demoscene, where bigger demos came on multiple floppies :)
I'd tell this whole demo is stylised as 90's Amiga demo, a little retro even back then.

Well even the music reads in the credits with Jonne Valtonen, which I would guess is the "Purple motion" guy from the 90's demoscene days.
So yeah makes sense the other stuff is also stylished like that.

By chance, just now I was exploring an old HD that I had transformed into an external case many years ago. I found this benchmark and installed it on my current notebook running Windows 11, 8GB of memory and Intel I5, with an integrated graphics card. It ran smoothly, always above 300 fps, but generally between 500 and 800 fps...
I remember that at the time, in the 2000s, it ran very slow, especially in the more elaborate scenes with a lot of graphic elements. I had a pretty good PC, with an ATI Radeon 8500XT and the other configurations I don't remember, but they were ok for a gamer at that time...

Must have watched 2001se a thousand times on my 4200ti and 9700pro. This was hella nostalgic, IIRC my 9700Pro got a score of about 13,000.

I remember seeing this in a pc store and not knowing it was a demo. Tried asking the store clerk what game it was. Sad gamer noises were made at response

    Yay!
I remember starting this one time and time again, only to watch it and listen to the music : D
But I never liked that Sandworm-thing. It looks goofy.
I remember watching it with a friend. When the Matrix scene appeared, he said, he believes that games will look someday like this.
    I wasnt so sure.
Well, Max Payne was purchased afterwards obviously ^^

ahh, the GeForce era ... i upgraded from TNT2 M64 to GeForce 2 MX and still cant run the "Nature" test ... it was the exclusive to true DirectX 8 cards like GeForce 3 Ti and Radeon 8500 ... I cant run these tests until 2003 when GeForce FX came out. although in 2002 GeForce4 Ti 4200 and Radeon 9500 was starting to become cheap but they are still out of my league in those days.

I remember the drama with nvidia when they got caught cheating in the demo.

What audio hardware are you using? Neither this or the 3DMark2000 demo recording you did sound the same as what I remember coming out of my SB AWE64 Gold back in the day...
or did those altec lansing sub/satellite setups that were so popular back then really sound that terrible? 🤣
