Elephants: A Bath and a Pedicure

- The Elephants at the Sedgwick County Zoo get a bath and a pedicure. Elephants are supposed to walk up to 3 or so miles a day in order to keep there "toenails" maintained. The elephants at the zoo don't have that opportunity so the zoo keepers help the elephants maintain there "toenails" a different way.

Elephant: "My usual pedicure please."
That was so cute seeing it trying to put it's foot up
First horse cleaning videos and now I'm on elephants. Guess I'm learning how to bathe and groom various animals today.
DeathnoteBB I came from horse shoeing 🤣🤣
the same! :P
Stefanie Horvath Same actually but I called it "cleaning" for some reason
hahahaha same
All we are doing the same thing 😂😂😂
This is what I have been saying a man has the privilege to protect and this video clip is a beautiful thing. Thank you Sedgwick County Zoo for your dedicated work to our majestic giants.
They are so precious. Give them lots and lots of hugs and kisses for me. Thank you. lynn
Than elephant LOVED the hosedown! It was like looking at an enormous puppy
I would be smiling ear to ear getting to do this. They look like they're miserable. Thank you for taking care of them but have fun.
@burningfeet 57, yes they are. I'd just be grinning like a fool the whole time. 😁
5:46 every guy that watches this knows how great that feels for the elephant. I’m jealous...
Sweater Wearing Squirrel
2nd best feeling in the world for a guy lol
"Great that feels.." ..dude if you are not free then being free should be the main concern . Feeling good can be momentary.
@@sunscream8502 Well Either be Free or have a Good Quality of Life. I think many would choose the latter.
Yeah, and every girl all the more so...
How clean elephant are maintained great work ! I have never seen so clean foot of elephant.
Today, I watched:
First, cow hoofing,
Second, horse hoofing,
Now, elephant hoofing,
Still....no chance of studying tonight!!!!😤😭😤😇😭😤
it’s trimming lol
So sweet i loved how the elephant laid down for his bath aaaaw 💓
Boy, does the one on the right love to shower!!! Adorable!!!!!!
Yes they are using bull hooks. Do they really need to.
@@sarahmcmullan3563 lol...you act as if they stand a chance with verbal commands alone. Everyone on the planet uses pain to gain compliance from large creatures.
@5:12 the elephant getting the shower is too cute! Shes loving every minute of that! I love elephants, I rode on the back of one when i was about 7yrs old, but I really REALLY want to meet one now that I appreciate how special, intelligent & sweet they are 😁❤🐘
G0ddess Kelly: look for elephantnews videos. Chiang Mai Thailand Elephant Nature Park. There are tons of them to watch. We don’t ride them any more. Well ... hopefully, fewer people do.
@@boa9535 thank you! I'm going to look for that now 😊
Yeah, unfortunately, 32yrs ago it was common to ride elephants 🙁 I was sad for the poor creature, asking my grandma, "when does the elephant get to rest?" My heart hurts when I think about that day, just walking in endless circles w/6 kids on it's back, & not seeing it sleep, eat or drink the whole time we were there 😢🐘❤
@7:39 too
They keep throwing treats at the elephants and the elephants couldn't care less 😂😂
Wonderful to see these majestic animals being so well treated❤️
Thank you dear angle for the caring Elipent 🙏😘
This is just like us stood under a hot shower after a long day. So sweet to see
They are incredible animals!😍
Such a majestic creature.
Feel so nice to be a human being after watchin this. Great Job Guys🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Amazing work Keepers!
It would be nice if the keepers showed a bit of affection for their beautiful elephants
How much more affection can they possibly show? They are quite literally giving these magnificent beasts a pedicure and bath. It's not exactly easy work to trim a elephant's foot ya know.
They are working and have a lot to do. Animals don't have unlimited patient: you have to be fast an don't waste time.
You can pet the animals you take care when you have finished your duties.
They are so beautiful ❤️🐘
When I grow up, i wanna be a professional elephant groomer 🤗
Finally I see a huge animal in a cage but actually being taken care of and spoiled lol so refreshing!!
This is how all of them should be treated!!!
Not exactly a prison it's more like their bathroom the bars are more for security of the people that are helping to clean them and the people there are deciding to watch them but they look very happy
@@yoired2232 true
Elephants are intelligent 🧠 and have brilliant memory
And people say zoo life is cruelty. These elephants looked super happy.
Happy to have a simulated moment of what life would be like in the wild. Reality sets back in once the hose is turned off
@@Xantank- There are no water hoses like this in the wild.
At water hole elephants use their trunk to mimic the hose
@@Xantank -But they're not protected from poachers, right? They are at least safe in this nice place.
@@6977warrior1 also there's no bars like these in the wild😘
I wonder if the elephant is perplexed by the humans ability to constantly shoot water from their “trunk”
I don't think they're stupid.
Pretty sure their just used to humans being able to do crazy shit.
That's cute thought 😂😂
lol I liked all the comments in this thread
This elephant is having a lovely spa day 😂
A hose-down, fresh fruit and pedicure? These elephants are in....elephant heaven.
ibuprofenPill far from elephant heaven. They are trained for all this, they do not enjoy getting their feet done or being pressure washed with cold water or sleeping on concrete floors, they are wild animals they are much happier bathing in a pond and sleeping on grass and having all the room in the world. They live in that tiny tiny pen. This is not heaven for them its simply hell and animal cruelty.
Rachel Szymanski, WTF do you know? You’re how old? 14? Your entire statement is total bullshit. They don’t live in a pen, that’s just the inside of their much larger outside enclosure. Don’t like being power washed? What about the elephant’s body language did you not understand? Elephants absolutely LOVE everything to do with water. They don’t sleep on concrete, they have a large comfy mound of hay in another room or outside. You know nothing and you’re an idiot.
Pretty smart. Too bad they can't be in a pool. Elephants really dont mind water.
That Elephant was telling her oh yeah.....right there..
Incredible animal.good job appreciate.
Cute elephants 🐘 😍
Sad to see these creatures locked up like this
This is good for the animals and they probably get let out side if you see in the back ground you can see a door leading somewhere and that probably outside so the animals can chill and the animals are taken care of pretty well
They look well and they look happy
I love it! These elephants are so happy.
Yeah, they seem pretty miserable, epicgame. Glad you are here to tell us what they are feeling.
Happy in the cage????? Fking idiot
chi cosa Offs are those elephants were born captive so what else do they know.
Really? I doubt that.
Y'all idiots know how hard it is to survive in the wild? These elephants get better treatment than you and I. They are not jailed all day, that's their house..same place we spend 8-10 hrs a day. Fukin retarded idiots in the comment section.
How obedient. How happily he put his foot there
that's incredible animal
This is their favorite part of the day
Their Amazing Animals 💓
Amo elefantes 😍😍😍🐘🐘🐘❤assim como amo o meu PAIS 🇧🇷🇧🇷❤❤
Wow they are trained
I don't think it's trained I think it's more like routine also it looks like they're really enjoying it well one of them is getting very impatient with his pedicure but the other one looks very comfortable with his bath
So that's what the bottom of an elephant's foot looks like.
Christine Cameron I thought the bottom of the elephants foot would be like the bottom of a horses hoof
My very same thought.
You all are killing me
I always thought it just looked like the rest of the elephant. :-P
If you look at the bottom feet of elephants that live in Africa, in conservation areas, they actually look different. Absolutely not orange but grey and the skin is the same as the rest of the animal with just a few "wrinkles". I don't know if this is because of where they live and walk everyday or because of the different specie of elephant, but they surely look different.
That high pressure hose would hurt if you were a human, but to elephant it probably feels like being in the shower lol.
Simple, this elephant is in captivity. No two way about it.
Nice camera for those years
Beautiful workers
QUE BELLOS Y NOBLES SON LOS ELEFANTES !!!
Laddies My trunk needs washing too!
I want that same treatment when I go to the zoo
Omg I love them😍😍😍😍
I love elephants
Pressure washing elephants seems to be a kind of fun job. :)
They have to make the habitat bigger then,so the elephants can have enough space to walk around in.
Elephants may be huge but are so adorable lol I just wish they wasn't in a cage
So Awesome 💓
thanks for the nice video
Perfekte Elefanten Pflege
My heart melted at 5:14. That elephant is loving that bath! it saddens me that they likely don't have room to roam, however. Are they using bullhooks?
On the bullhooks question yes however, it looks like they're (or, just the lady doing the pedicure) using it signaling the elephant by tapping (0:47, 1:03) instead of pulling and digging into the skin like we see a lot of circus abusers caught on tape doing. I'm cool with that even though they should, like Marius Nesser said in their comment, use a padded contact pole.
FlowingDepths That room is just for them to be washed in. Most of the time they have huge exhibits so the elephants can roam for a little bit.
Did your heart melt when you saw them in cages? Did you feel good that the elephants you are seeing are not even in their homes. Its like feeding non guilty prisoners and feeling good about it.
@@deathvalleycutthroatgang2049 I know right it's at the thumb people don't understand the plus and being in a place where other people can take care of you there in captivity and they probably were born there so I don't think they give a s*** I think they weren't even want to leave and be harder story about how he left this so we had to fend for ourselves I'm pretty sure it would feel like that
@@sunscream8502 do you even know what you're saying?
I wish my shower had that water pressure
Que hermosos 😍😍😍
Yumm! Shredded carrot for the soup!
Se nota que los cuidan bien
Does the stick used to maneuver the elephant cause any harm. These are wonderful magnificent animals and everything should be done to make their lives better
Woow... Big elephant
Is the forced of the water coming out to harsh even if they do have thick skin? I mean like the bottom of our feet have thick skin too but we can still feel shit.
Lovely 😊
Don’t forget to wash behind your ears, kids. Especially if you’re an elephant
LOL
i like this job god bless you
Very intelligent

What are they doing to their nails???? What are they taking off exactly????
If they just need to take off the old growth, at least to start, why not use a power sander?
this is wonderful but we are in 2019... there s no machine like a razor to do such things in 1 minute and less ? I m really surprised.
we still dont have auto nail clipper for human and u think theres one for elephant?
People wouldn’t want to pay to see a one minute procedure
Elephants are so adorable!!!!
P.S
What is that annoying whining or wooing sound throughout the video?
Tanks :D
Good job
The Beverly Hills elephants.
What do they put on the soles of their feet?
The fact the keeper has an elephant hook & the elephants are doing learned movements they’ve been taught like in a circus act is worrying, it’s sad that they’re in captivity rather than being free in the wild!
free? free but hunted by poacher
That's how they behave when they are bathed. It's normal. They are mimicking what they do in the wild. There they bath on their own using their trunk. Here it's the lady bathing them using her hose. Nirmal elephants keep themselves quite clean this way. Once washed they throw mud on themselves as protection against mosquitoes and other insects. Most of them would happily stay in water for hours on end if they had a chance.
Lux Life I think the commenter meant learned movements like the way the elephant knows to kick its foot up on the chain to get its feet done. While it’s necessary in captivity, that’s not something elephants know to do in the wild.
*_do not anger the most giant of land beasts_*
Wait, is that what the bottom of an elephant's foot looks like?
here I was thinking that was some sort of blister then she starts scraping it I was like 😯
Me gustaría que estuvieras en su hábitat.
The bull hook tells me everything I need to know about the treatment of these elephants.
A traditional 'hook' has a point on it and using a cane a cue for direction is not with cruelty. Both elephants were cooperating w/ their keepers, and in particular, the elephant repeating the movement to put his leg up on the pedicure resting position. These elephants are healthy and well cared for.
Lana Dill sorry but canes don’t have hooks on them and there is a sharp point on the end of that hook. I’ve seen them controlled with bamboo canes and the one in this video is not a cane.
They use that bull hook for hitting the elephant if they don’t follow😭😭😭😭I’ve seen it before😭
The "Bullhook" is ACTUALLY called, an "Ankus", "Takaw", or more modernly called "The Elephant Guide" (or just "Guide") and It is a Husbandry Tool that is used around Elephants trained in "Free Contact" - which is sharing the same space with the Elephant - for Thousands of years. The tool misleads people from its appearance most of all - It has a curved end and straight end, and is actually not completely sharp nor very dull. The tool is made to gently "grab" or grip at, pull, push, cue or simply touch the elephant at certain parts of it's body to correlate with a variety of verbal commands. The guide was not made to be a weapon against the elephant as Animal Rights Extremist groups portray it as. It is a GUIDE and serves the same purpose as a Dog's leash or a Horse's reins. It helps communicate with the animal and positively reinforce taught behaviors
ne of the most common propaganda claims by Animal Rights Extremists is that The Guide is used to cause harm, that Elephants are taught to fear it and make the Elephant "submit" to its trainer. It is a highly misleading claim and Lie. Now, To make things clear and not "sugar coat" things, There are people out there that Misuse the Guide but The MAJORITY of Elephant caregivers do not use the guide in such a neglectful way. It's not right to label all elephant handlers as "Abusers" just because they carry a Ankus / Guide. That's like Labeling all Dog owners bad just because a few Dog owners abuse their dogs...
-
Anyways, The Guide is not meant to harm the Elephant. Elephants are certainly not taught to fear it, They are ACTUALLY taught to get used to their caretaker holding it and touching them with it during training. Some elephants will play with the guide and engage in games with their handler, such as a game of fetch or tug of war. No, They are not "beaten into submission". Elephants cannot become submissive. Even as babies, They know their power and intelligence. Like many know, Elephants have amazing memory and If a trainer were to cause it any harm or suffering, That elephant would not be loyal at all. The Guide is not stopping an Elephant from killing or harming their trainer, or making the elephant do things it doesn't want to do. Elephants build up respect, trust and love for their handlers. Elephants are trained through POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT - which usually involves lots of food and physical contact. Same as you with your pet dog or cat. Do you "beat" your dog to get it to sit down? Of course not! It's about building that companionship and rewarding the animal
The Guide use is very important for working with Elephants in "Free Contact" because it is a vital part of communication and an extension of a handler's arm, that allows the handler to cue the elephant what to do or where to do - Again, Same as a leash for a dog or reins for a Horse. The Guide is barely a pound in weight and is up to 24 inches in length. The ends are not razor sharp but made to "grab" at the skin of the elephant without harming it. In the US, The Guide is also REQUIRED by Law and the USDA to have when working with elephants in Free contact. The Guide is also approved by the American Veterinary Association and Elephant Managers Association.
-
The guide is really most important for helping with veterinary examinations. In early training, Elephants are first taught to lift their trunk, open their mouth and lift their feet one at a time, as well as lay down. These behaviors help the vet better examine the elephant most successfully - as they are able to check inside the trunk and mouth, check the elephant's feet, underside, and give the elephant proper X-rays, blood tests and other analysis. The guide is also Helpful with keeping the Elephant away from danger or getting into trouble, which is why handlers walk beside the elephant. This is in case The Elephant may wonder off, go the wrong way or may become a problem to property or a person (which is rare). In Indian or Asian cultures, The Ankus/Takaw can be useful for self-defense against anything that wishes to harm the mahout or their elephant.
The People who speak against and spread propaganda on the use of the Ankus / Guide are mostly Animal Rights Extremist groups, such as PETA and those that follow the agenda of Animal Rights. They have no working experience with Elephants yet pretend to know everything about Elephant care and husbandry. Animal Rights extremist groups are multi-million dollar organizations who can easily manipulate the public with simple, edited videos or media posts - These very people are even in our legal systems which is why laws banning the Guide has occurred. These people speak against the use of the guide truly because they want people to believe them - as they enjoy media attention and fame - and want to ban circuses and zoos which will cause the end of working alongside elephants and ensure their extinction. The Animal Rights industry do not care about welfare of these animals - They only want money, attention and to ban animals and people working together as well as Ban animal companions - basically controlling what we can do in the future. Their agenda is sickening and twisted.
-
People who are against the use of the guide do not and will not understand the importance of communication between elephants and humans or how to properly work with elephants period because they are ignorant and only want to force their agenda and emotional beliefs among others. They will soon learn that propaganda never wins and there will always be those who speak the truth. If these Animal rights followers spoke up for true welfare of animals and conservation of these animals - There would be a lot more positive things done, but they are too worried about the Elephants in our care that are truly loved and protected from horrible threats in the wild than The Elephants that are suffering in the wild... They are selfish and only care about controlling what we do with animals and our bonds with animals. Do not Fall for the Animal Rights agenda!
Los lastiman?
Porq eles vivem presos na jaula ? Muito triste😭😭
You could probably sell those foot shavings in China for $6k an ounce.
Just watching this video and was wondering why the keepers need to use/have the BULL-HOOK on these elephants when directing elephants but when given food of hay/straw/alfalfa the trainer walks in the bars and when washing the elephant down with the big hose also I've never known elephants to be stretched out with front legs forward and back ones bent at the knees stretched outward can the workers with the elephants not use BULL-HOOKS when checking out the elephant for the veterinarian to check for health issues or seeing that the toes and bottom feet are worked on.......just curious
It’s called a Guide and it’s required by law when dealing free contact with an elephant. It’s not used as a weapon but simply as a guide. It is a common traditional tool and basically acts as an extension of the trainers arm. They are not using it as a weapon.
She just grated foot cheese into his food!

I think they're tangerines or something so she basically pink some off
Why scraping the entire bottom?
