Record all Sounds from your Computer with Loopback

  • Loopback is a special and very useful feature in TotalMix FX. With Loopback, you can take output of one software program, and send this back as an input signal for a different software program. Or you can create a mix of input signals, playback signals, or both, and send this back as a stereo input for recording. It works just like plugging a cable from an output channel to an input channel, except it all happens inside TotalMix and therefore works completely transparent.

    At last a clear explanation of how this works, and just traid it - it does! Beware: when you route back in through Loopback you will not see the signal appear at the respective input on Totalmix (in this video ADAT 15/16), this is confusing, but find the input on your DAW from the correct Totalmix input, arm it to record and you will see the signal appear.

    The most powerful thing really is the fact that you can do as many sub mixes from your software outputs as you have physical outputs. Then loop them back and record that sub mix... it really is powerful stuff :)

    I have had Total mix since I purchased my FF400 for years and I still do not have control of it. Replaying videos doesn't help... I tried Prevegen, Neureva, Focus Factor... nothing helps. I am very glad there is a reset function for when I really screw things up. This video helps me tremendously. Thank you. :P

    Loopback is definitely one of dealbreaker functions of RME!
    though, just in case someone will have problems with loopback functionality within OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) - it doesn't work on MacOS sadly (because OBS expects only 2in/2out audio interface under MacOS), workaround is either switching your RME interface into Class-Compliant mode (stereo only) or use third-party app to capture RME inputs (Loopback by Rogue Amoeba for ex.)

    @RME: While making FaceTime-sessions on mac during corona-lockdown, I needed this setup:
    - Input mic for instrument (mono on channel 1).
    - Input mic for speak (mono on channel 2).
    - Prerecorded backing-track, played from iTunes/QuickTime or DAW (stereo).
    - Headphones connected for monitoring and hearing students.
    The students should be able to hear the two mics (with different levels) mixed with the backing track..
    It didn’t seem possible to route (and mix) this. It was as if FaceTime only took the first input channels directly from the source (without TotalMix). The same problems occurred when using other apps like Zoom.
    Can you please make a video that shows how to make these routings in TotalMix and setup on mac os?

  • @johnhunter4181

    When I connect the output to the input I just get 250 watts of digital feedback. Your diagram at 0:43 shows Output > Input so how does that ever work?

    • @SomebodyPickaName
      @SomebodyPickaName Год назад

      Because you likely have the fader for the input channel turned up on the input channel you're using for loopback. With the loopback feature enabled, leave the fader all the way down on the input section and it shouldn't feedback.

    Can I use the ADAT Channels for Loopback (so as you say, I don't have to sacrifice any of the other inputs) even if there is nothing connected to them? Probably not, as they aren't shown as Inputs in Ableton without any Preamp connected - right?

    • @SomebodyPickaName
      @SomebodyPickaName Год назад

      I'm a year late to reply but yes, you can send to a channel not being used - in fact, this is the best use-case for channels not in use. In Ableton, go to your preferences, then the audio tab, then click the "output config" button and turn on whichever channel you are using.

Last thing but for me i think the biggest part is... when i select assign main and or headphones that adat channel will dissapear from th hardware ouputs section same for phones i use 3/4 for main and 5/6 for phones. I want to do the right thing cause that maybe will save cpu or crackles when i record in cubase. I watched all the RME vids but i just dont get it all i see is demo's of other types of interfaces. All i see is demo's with other mains or phones sections. Do i have to change control room settings in cubase? cause there i send signal to 3/4 output and 5/6 phones. It all works for now but i think it can do better please help me out here cause it i want to be able to monitor sounds from the daw without being limited i bouht the RME hdsp 9652 years ago and i will never change to anything else but i think i do something wrong and missing the big thing here

    • @RMEAudio
      @RMEAudio  2 года назад

      Yes, the loopback signal has priority. If you want to use your mic and the loopback funktion you have to use a different output for loopback. You can copy your output to a different output by right clicking. If you work on Mac you have to use a workaround if you want to use mic and loopback for streaming, because most streaming softwares on Mac only accepts the first 2 inputs of the interface. ruclips.net/video/Mpibtzb72RI/видео.html

You’ll still hear the computer audio on the Software Playback in Total Mix (the channel renamed ‘Computer) during record. After recording lift fader back up in your DAW and check your recording. Turn the applicable middle (software) row fader/s down - otherwise they'll cause a feedback loop. These are being fed back into a hardware input via the Loopback feature - you should only have that hardware input feeding into your speakers/phones/etc (and fader down on the applicable 'original' software middle row). You're essentially going to have 2 copies of the 'loopback' audio - which you don't want playing back at the same time.
