The last scene where we see Elvis sitting on the Piano playing 'Unchained Melody' - that is NOT Austin Butler. That's the KING himself! They decided not to use prosthetics on Austin as it would look weird. So the producers decided to show the real ELVIS's last performance, the LAST time anyone saw him on stage. To let us feel what's it like to see him alive and then he's gone forever........

I wanted to know more about the "influencers" during Elvis's growing years. Maybe hitting a more psychological perspective of Elvis growing into the man he became. Still looking forward to the movie but I heard they left Linda Thompson out. Seriously, Elvis, the real man, was a such a badass though. Elvis forever! Well I heard Luhrmann has a four hour cut that goes deeper. Personally, I feel Luhrmann doesn’t know how to tell a deep nuanced character study. But that’s ok, I didn’t come in expecting that. This movie was a bit long, and Hanks was from an SNL skit, but I was entertained. Butler gave an Oscar worthy performance.

If it were directed by Greta Gerwig or Wes Anderson or David O russel we’d get something else entirely. I will offer a diff viewpoint...that 1st half hour where you say it's alot coming at you at once? It seems to me, or at least this is how saw it as, is that THATS how elvis felt. His stardom took off at a dizzying pace and it was almost too much for him. Tha whole debut and beginning of his career was a whirlwind, I mean even when you watch real footage of his 1st few yrs performing,the women are deafening,and almost" scary" because the women are just absolutely going apesh*t . You know what I mean.. when you can't even hear when he's speaking or even the music can be muted by the screams and shreaks of females who were obviously crying out to release some taboo sexual tension of the times.The start of Elvis,I feel, is just like the montage,the craziness Baz creates ,the way you described it I feel is exactly how Elvis felt,how people felt watching someone do what he did on live tv. Do you get what I'm saying? Am I making any sense? I mean, I'm just saying how I perceived it. Maybe Baz didn't mean for it to be like that,maybe he just wanted it to be an artistic vision. But, to me,the almost hallucinating feel of those scenes must be how elvis felt when fame just hit him like a ton of bricks and im sure he must've felt like he was hallucinating,or like things were crazy and out of hand because they were...and about the whole thing with black culture..this movie at least gives props to those really started rock and roll..the layman's way of thinking is that elvis,or artists like him started rock and roll...the black woman who sang hound dog( I forget her name atm) really invented the cadences of rock as far as adding distortion to guitar,bending strings,etc. Alot of movies about elvis don't really dive deep or give credit to who really created the sound of rock and roll......so I think RT got it right at 81%. Yes Tom hanks narration is almost repulsive at times and you want him to stfu and let me just watch dammit. But Austin gets an A+. Like you said there are 1000s of impersonators, but Austin IS him. It doesn't feel like an overdramatic portrayal. It feels like it's him. The reason to see this film? Just forget plot,forget Tom Parker, forget writing,the script,all of that.Just watch it to see the amazing costume design, set design of the times,and Austin's portrayal. He sings like him,talks like him,walks Iike him,etc. He did his homework for sure. Elvis had diff ways of talking and singing throughout his life,and that must've been quite a task,seeing as how there's plenty of movies and impersonators. So again,don't get too deep when seeing this. Just see it to enjoy visual and auditory pleasure. It's not a movie for a deep plot,or that gets 100% of the facts right ( which most biopics change facts or leave out things). It's just not going to be an oscar winner best picture movie..BUT I could see Butler getting a nomination or a win for this role Just a diff opinion. 80%
Watched it opening night in the theater with my two teenage nephews, we all enjoyed it, I need to see it a few more times. I greatly enjoyed Austin Butler’s performance as Elvis. Unfortunately this really was not a biopic, it was the story of the relationship between Elvis and Parker as told by Parker. Baz also likes to say it is the story of America in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. The music as presented was to be expected, Baz in his movies likes to mix old with new, but although it was good I think a true biopic could have made it great. TCB⚡️
I have watched Moulin Rouge so many times I can't even remember how many. My hubby gave me a little push back about seeing this because Elvis stole music from black people. Once I asked him if Elvis was the only one he was like "okay"...we are going to see it today. Elvis is getting Oscar buzz already.

Same, I watch it endless times in my teenage years, I couldn’t even put a number on how many times if I tried lol curious to see Elvis, but I wished they mixed in some of the darker truth as well.
Elvis did not steal music from black people. He was inspired by Country, Gospel, Pop & R&B and made it his own sound. His first major hit was written by a white country female and Hound Dog was written by two jewish songwriters. If Elvis stole from black music then black music stole from white music before them (piano, guitars, recording technology, harmony). Nobody stole from anyone, all artists are influenced from past artists and benefit from previous music and inventions regarding sound technology.

I was born in 1960, and grew up listening to his records and watched some of his movies due to my siblings, so of course, I knew who he was, but that was about it. When the movie came out, I wasn’t interested because I’d seen so much on Elvis already. However, the movie was on Netflix until the end of April, and since I like Tom Hanks, thought what the heck. Uh, I’ve watched it 6 times now. Never have I been so affected by a movie before. And I intend to actually buy it, a first for me buying a movie. Since watching the movie, I’ve been going down the Elvis rabbit hole.
Please watch the 1988 Elvis & Me movie based on the book by Priscilla Presley. It’s my favorite Elvis movie and it answers most of your questions regarding the other women, his acting career, and his real life as a celebrity. This new movie is artistic and gets people interested in Elvis but there’s so much more to his story.
I don't know much about Elvis either. Plus, "hardly the first time that we've seen a bio-pic *or* an attempted bio-pic." Didn't know that, love information , that's good to know! Oh Mark Patton ! I only know his name because I literally just watched the documentary he was in (Scream ,Queen!) and really enjoyed it . He seems like a lovely person.
Fun facts: The Black female artist (hound dog) was Big Mama Thornton. And who that actress/singer represents. Mama was A big sized queer woman artist who sang the Blues. There’s a great video of her singing it with Buddy Guy on guitar on a tv show.
I really loved the movie myself I just finished seeing it and I see where you guys are going but to me it’s petty in my book sorry but I will say this that this movie needed to be a part 1 and 2 to really fill all of what you guys want filled I give it a 9/10

If you are interested in learning about Elvis watch a documentary named “The Searcher”. Now-about Tom Hanks-he didn’t need to play that part. Any unknown could’ve. The only reason he did is IT WOULD ATTRACT A BIGGER AUDIENCE because Austin Butler was not well known. If Hanks didn’t get the part it would’ve been just another “so-so Elvis movie” BAZ was smart in that choice! Also it wasn’t that Elvis loved black people so much, it’s that Memphis was majorly black back then and he grew up in that area. He didn’t know any other environment. I know he had a lot of white friends (Memphis Mafia) but they probably weren’t interested in singing and dancing as much as Elvis was. Otherwise-great review! Enjoyed it.

Joseph I'd be mighty interested in what you think of Romeo and Juliet after watching it. It's certainly not a masterpiece, but its my favorite film by Luhrmann. I did enjoy his take on the Great Gatsby too. I haven't seen this yet, but I probably will at some point.
My dad's favorite is the Kurt Russel/Carpenter show - I haven't heard anyone mention that in forever. My Dad loves all music - he really loves Elvis and REALLY hates Colonel Tom Parker. YIKES I am taking him to see this film Saturday. I was raised in Memphis, during Elvis career. I'm a black female. Please watch parts 1 and 2 of Elvis and the Black Community. Elvis was a Civil Rights, activist. He was compassionate and would help anyone. Dr. Nick was responsible for All the pills he prescribed illegally. Yes, he died on the toilet. Not a rumor. 1st and foremost, they did humanize Tom Parker. He was horrible! Parker wouldn't allow him to do dramatic movies. He met a naive young man and used him for his own gains. He was never a Colonel. He was a Dutch, illegal, immigrant. He joined the military as soon as he came to the USA. He took 50% of Elvis income. He never allowed Elvis to perform overseas because he was afraid of being deported.
The only Baz film I didn't care for was Australia. I'm pretty excited for this one. Not a huge elvis fan however I did like watching Blue Hawaii as a kid. To think he passed away only a couple years older than I am now is a little shocking. Edit: now that all these dead artists are being revisited I really need an R rated Keith Moon film. Now that would be an interesting 2 1/2 hours.

Does the actor do his own vocals? Sorry if you mentioned it and I missed it. LOL. The only music biopic pics I enjoy tend to be the ones where the actors do their own singing. Coal Miners Daughter, Ray, Walk the Line. Stuff like Bohemian Rhapsody where they lip sync I just can't take seriously.
In general, Tom Hanks is good but overrated. I feel the same about most roles he’s in; they should cast an unknown instead because it’s always distracting and I never get lost in his characters.
This is why I don't care for many of the big American movies. It's the same actors over and over, Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, Leonardo D., Will S., Marill S., a bunch of skills blonde girls that I can't tell apart.

Baz loves a frenetic pace! I do wish he slowed down a bit in the first half to allow us to really focus on Elvis’ childhood and upbringing instead of the story being told by the Colonel’s point of view. Austin Butler was so damn impressive though, I loved just watching his performance. He killed it. Singing everything on his own too. His performance blows Rami Malek out of the water (I didn’t like Bohemian Rhapsody much). Wow.
The 1950's were sung by Butler cause the recordings made then did not hold up to be clear enough to use for the movie; 1960's was a blend of his voice and Elvis'; 1970's was Elvis' voice

If you want to learn about Elvis, not Felvis, but Elvis, watch HBO’s Elvis Presley: The Searcher (2018). It’s all there and very well done.
He met her when she was 14 and moved to Memphis when she was 18 and lived with Elvis's dad for a little while then moved into Graceland.

Little Richard, Stevie Wonder, BB King, Roy Hamiton and Jackie Wilson all respected Elvis and said he opened the door for all artists.

Same, I watch it endless times in my teenage years, I couldn’t even put a number on how many times if I tried lol curious to see Elvis, but I wished they mixed in some of the darker truth as well.
Elvis did not steal music from black people. He was inspired by Country, Gospel, Pop & R&B and made it his own sound. His first major hit was written by a white country female and Hound Dog was written by two jewish songwriters. If Elvis stole from black music then black music stole from white music before them (piano, guitars, recording technology, harmony). Nobody stole from anyone, all artists are influenced from past artists and benefit from previous music and inventions regarding sound technology.

In the theater there was a rap song randomly in the scene when he was in Memphis. Also at the end in the ghetto was a remix Duo and followed by a Eminem song in the credits.

I was born in 1960, and grew up listening to his records and watched some of his movies due to my siblings, so of course, I knew who he was, but that was about it. When the movie came out, I wasn’t interested because I’d seen so much on Elvis already. However, the movie was on Netflix until the end of April, and since I like Tom Hanks, thought what the heck. Uh, I’ve watched it 6 times now. Never have I been so affected by a movie before. And I intend to actually buy it, a first for me buying a movie. Since watching the movie, I’ve been going down the Elvis rabbit hole.
You could only do the film this way . Elvis full life is complicated .you couldn't do it in a movie . He wasn't fat he was acually just over 15 stone
Please watch the 1988 Elvis & Me movie based on the book by Priscilla Presley. It’s my favorite Elvis movie and it answers most of your questions regarding the other women, his acting career, and his real life as a celebrity. This new movie is artistic and gets people interested in Elvis but there’s so much more to his story.

Fun facts: The Black female artist (hound dog) was Big Mama Thornton. And who that actress/singer represents. Mama was A big sized queer woman artist who sang the Blues. There’s a great video of her singing it with Buddy Guy on guitar on a tv show.
I really loved the movie myself I just finished seeing it and I see where you guys are going but to me it’s petty in my book sorry but I will say this that this movie needed to be a part 1 and 2 to really fill all of what you guys want filled I give it a 9/10

If you are interested in learning about Elvis watch a documentary named “The Searcher”. Now-about Tom Hanks-he didn’t need to play that part. Any unknown could’ve. The only reason he did is IT WOULD ATTRACT A BIGGER AUDIENCE because Austin Butler was not well known. If Hanks didn’t get the part it would’ve been just another “so-so Elvis movie” BAZ was smart in that choice! Also it wasn’t that Elvis loved black people so much, it’s that Memphis was majorly black back then and he grew up in that area. He didn’t know any other environment. I know he had a lot of white friends (Memphis Mafia) but they probably weren’t interested in singing and dancing as much as Elvis was. Otherwise-great review! Enjoyed it.

Joseph I'd be mighty interested in what you think of Romeo and Juliet after watching it. It's certainly not a masterpiece, but its my favorite film by Luhrmann. I did enjoy his take on the Great Gatsby too. I haven't seen this yet, but I probably will at some point.

My dad's favorite is the Kurt Russel/Carpenter show - I haven't heard anyone mention that in forever. My Dad loves all music - he really loves Elvis and REALLY hates Colonel Tom Parker. YIKES I am taking him to see this film Saturday. I am concerned though - I think we both thought Elvis was the main event - if it's the Colonel - I might talk him out of it. 😬 (I was looking forward to the spectacle of a Luhrmann experience) - I don't want to cause a rant about The Evil Parker, that lasts all day, as this was supposed to be a fun "escapism" afternoon. Parker wouldn't allow him to do dramatic movies. He met a naive young man and used him for his own gains.
He was never a Colonel. He was a Dutch, illegal, immigrant. He joined the military as soon as he came to the USA. He took 50% of Elvis income. He never allowed Elvis to perform overseas because he was afraid of being deported.
I love these dudes! Too many montages and I didn't really like Hanks. It's a decent overview and I dug the entire 68 Comeback special section, though.

The only Baz film I didn't care for was Australia. I'm pretty excited for this one. Not a huge elvis fan however I did like watching Blue Hawaii as a kid. To think he passed away only a couple years older than I am now is a little shocking.
Edit: now that all these dead artists are being revisited I really need an R rated Keith Moon film. Now that would be an interesting 2 1/2 hours.

I don't really care enough about Elvis to sit through the cinematic ADHD version of his life. Plus, the Tom Hanks of it all is just too much to even think about. In regards to straight actors playing gay, it's aggravating when straight actors complain about how they should/shouldn't take on gay roles. Yes, please tell us how you've been oppressed and don't get to play the roles you want to play.

Does the actor do his own vocals? Sorry if you mentioned it and I missed it. LOL. The only music biopic pics I enjoy tend to be the ones where the actors do their own singing. Coal Miners Daughter, Ray, Walk the Line. Stuff like Bohemian Rhapsody where they lip sync I just can't take seriously.

In general, Tom Hanks is good but overrated. I feel the same about most roles he’s in; they should cast an unknown instead because it’s always distracting and I never get lost in his characters.
This is why I don't care for many of the big American movies. It's the same actors over and over, Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, Leonardo D., Will S., Marill S., a bunch of skills blonde girls that I can't tell apart.

Baz loves a frenetic pace! I do wish he slowed down a bit in the first half to allow us to really focus on Elvis’ childhood and upbringing instead of the story being told by the Colonel’s point of view. Austin Butler was so damn impressive though, I loved just watching his performance. He killed it. Singing everything on his own too. His performance blows Rami Malek out of the water (I didn’t like Bohemian Rhapsody much). Wow.
The 1950's were sung by Butler cause the recordings made then did not hold up to be clear enough to use for the movie; 1960's was a blend of his voice and Elvis'; 1970's was Elvis' voice
