Thanks for your insightful recollection of your time with Maynard Ferguson. I have been a lifelong fan of Maynard Ferguson and his great bands. Going way back to 1974, I have enjoyed over thirty live MF concerts and now at 66, I still get a thrill from Maynard's music. I share many of your thoughts and sentiments and very much appreciate your great video tribute. Thanks Phil.

As a trumpet player who has seen Maynard (and yourself the drummer) live many times. You couldn’t be more spot on with the power of Maynard and the band and the demanding charts. I’ve always wondered what the drummer thought about the drum chair because it seemed to me it was super intense. And now I know! 😁 Maynard was my hero growing up and still is. Thank you so much, this was an amazing interview that I didn’t want to end! (Also heck ya man you were killer and I’m sure I’ve listened to you 1000’s of times!)

Awesome story. I seen Maynard with my son(a screaming trumpet player) in 98-99 I think. He had killer trumpet in band. He didn't play as much as he did 10 yrs earlier, but when he did, OMG the power, sound and range was a thrill. My son said man you can tell he's played over 60 yrs. When Maynard passed the magic left. Never be another Maynard 🙏✌️👏👏👏👍 and your incredible drummer. The memories you have. Wow
Yeah bro....the power he had was astounding. From what I understand about trumpet Maynard was kind of a freak of nature. The embouchure he was somehow born with. Thats probably why there will never be another like him. ;-)
Wayne,Eric,Patrick,Carl you know better than me. There's killer trumpet players out there. You got to play with the great. I love how he loved an gave props to his musicians. Lynn another guy we love. 🎺🎺🥁
Thanks for the great Maynard stories! Great video clips interwoven with the stories! Interesting to hear the perspective of being on the band from a drummer !
Hey Phil, thanks for the great video and your commentary. Maynard was definitely one-of-a-kind. And thank you for the kind words about big bands , it seems as though big band drumming is becoming a lost art. thanks again for all you did to further the art.
Hi Leslie. And thank you for writing. I feel that you are correct unfortunately. Big band drumming has become a very rare skill. Anything that is done largely for artistic purposes seems to head for obscurity. A sad commentary on current culture. I must say though that the art form in general is much more respected where drumming is a deep part of the culture. Cuba Brazil etc. I feel the USA is not a place for great drumming anymore. The small percentage of players that are great there are on a top level for sure. But in general the average person has lost the deep connection to drumming. So we plug away and do our best. Many greetings bratha.
Hey Phil - man, what a great video! I was on the band with you in that video - so cool to see that concert again, you're playing your ass off! Everything you said about Maynard is so true - what a beautiful guy and giant of a musician. I am grateful to have played with him and you! Much love, Spike Wilner

@@philmaturanodrums thanks Phil, one thing I have always been curious about is when you’re touring with a band like this how do the musicians practice to keep their chops in order, or is just playing on the bandstand enough?
@@philmaturanodrums OK, Phil saw that and very interesting insights. If I was a drummer, and not a saxophone player I’d join your class! but I still wonder WHEN while touring. You are on the bandstand or in a bus, when do you get a chance to practice bang or blow
@@jwmc41 Well there are so many factors. On a tour like Maynards where you have to play your butt off every night....giving the body and ears a rest becomes essential. So personally from the drum chair I only warmed up for about 1/2 hour before hitting.
