    I hate digital distribution with a passion. I cant think of the last time I bought a full 60$ game via Steam. Id rather walk into a store, pick up a box, and buy it that way so I can give my self the illusion I'm back in the old days where we owned way more of our games then we do now. I know in the end I'm still basically buying nothing and will have to activate the key on Steam anyhow, but its like what Rich said, its more rewarding to see your purchase then just download it. Will make me very sad when boxes disappear and everything's in the cloud... to bad its the future.

    • @WOranos
      @WOranos 10 лет назад +1

      Yeah, I'd like to know what kind of server farm they expect manufacturers are going to create FOR EACH GAME at release, to process and serve out potentially millions of concurrent streams to dummy terminals. Many single player games require some serious hardware being dedicated to running them with decent or better fidelity. How exactly is this much dispersed processing power going to be recreated and centralized to stream out at that same level of quality? Short answer is it won't. Either the quality takes it up the ass or you let the clients do the work.
      The only thing that I think Rich is correct about is that eventually, games will only be purchasable and obtainable online. But the cloud will never take over client-side processing. Gamers want better visual and audio quality in their games and a cloud will never offer that. And as games become even more demanding of the hardware (and they will until we hit the lifelike plateau), the thought of a cloud service keeping pace becomes ever more laughable.
      The Cloud as a default gaming platform is a pie-in-the-sky dream.

    • @UpNorthGameReviews
      @UpNorthGameReviews 10 лет назад +3

      Wrath Oranos The fact that if they stream games, and they have the right to end the game completely is the one thing that'll make this idea useless.
      The instant somebody brings up the fact that they can turn off our games, and never again can we play them, it's done, forever.

    There have been so many of these massive changes that never actually happen. I remember when every IT tech I met said "In 5 years we will run all our software off USB sticks", The idea being that you can carry around a usb stick, and put it in a "dummy" terminal anywhere to use your own setup. Never happened. People will always want to be able to run their games locally and I don't think anyone would stand for it. Look at Microsoft and their DLC policies - Everyone hated it - Never happened. Another thing is Nvidia, AMD, and Intel aren't just going to let that happen - they need people to build their own machines to make a profit.

      what happens when like he said the company goes out of business? can't download the games before they shutdown, you wasted your money on all the games you bought. There has to be a physical backup of some sort for gamers. What if something else happens to that streaming service/cloud? It's bad to rely on one source for our games that can be gone pretty quickly. Same with books if there is no physical book out there and companies deem the book not worthy of putting it for sale on their stores? Electronic sources can get shutdown by companies not doing well, hackers that feel like taking down a service for fun or getting paid by another company to do it.

  • @NikoBelic4
    @NikoBelic4 10 лет назад +17

    I would rather take digital distribution, then pay a monthly fee for a streaming service. These companies are going to take advantage, and abuse this service. We've seen it done in the past, and this will further strengthen the anti-consumer practices of DRM. You'll never own anything anymore, and every game that you'll play will be at the mercy of the publisher/service. Plus, if those servers go down, that's it, you'll never see that game again. That's why i'm against an all-digital future, because the games that i pay for, will be at the mercy of the company who wants to put restictive DRM in their services. There's also the fact that most of the classic games like Mega Man Legends, Brave Fencer Musashi, and Vectorman are still not on any digital storefront right now, and there's a very good chance those games are going to disappear into obscurity forever, thus the gaming community will lose out on a piece of history. Again, i'll support digital downloads, over cloud gaming anyday, because at leat i'll be able to own the game on my hard drive forever.

    • @Rowan3733
      @Rowan3733 10 лет назад

      Digital distribution + DRM and server based play like Diablo 3 would still render a game unplayable. So whether it's digital, or streamed, companies could still take advantage.If there was a "server down" issue, the same could still happen. In the end it is up to the consumer, will we let these things happen? Anyway your point is mute if you consider these facts.

      Cipher Zero Yes, and the sad fact is that there are big named companies who will use cloud gaming as a way to vaccum more money from the consumer. There are still AAA games being sold for retail prices, instead of them being cheaper. If the pubishers want to defeat retail, they have to lower the prices to $40, a game.

    You're being way too optimistic about the time frame. We'll get there in 10 years? Try 15-20 at the earliest. There is no way in hell the internet infrastructure is going to improve this much in such a short amount of time.
    You can't make a cloud streaming service mandatory until every single potential consumer has access to it; and that includes people who are still stuck with fucking dial-up today.

  • @Sagasaurus

    The streaming service isn't for new games--it is for older games. The reason why they are doing Last of Us is because Sony owns it, so they can. But new games will be sold as is, and then after a year or so, once they stop selling as much, it will go into the clouds.
    And to be honest, the company will most likely make more money this way than without the service. Because right now, people are buying used games down the road, and the company makes 0 bucks off of used games sold. Whereas with the service, the company will make X amount for each game streamed.
    So I don't think price is a problem.
    As for nostalgia, I do hear you there, but my nostalgia remains with SNES and N64, Xbox, PS1, PS2. As for future kids, they won't get that anymore, but they will find nostalgia in new aspects of gaming, just as we did, and just as those in the past did.
    Do I fear the day physical disks are no more? Yes: I like physically owning a copy, and I like being able to sell the games I don't want or liked. It makes me shudder to think I could end up buying a game like Raccoon City for 60 bucks and not being able to sell it back the next day. It's going to suck for kids, too, who get their new games by trading in old ones.
    Yet, to me, we get to be the generation that got to experience this transition first hand. We weren't grandfathered in, and we weren't too old to not care.

    I am a huge collector, mostly of 1980 era games and up. One of my favorite things about video games is the box art and instruction manuals. For example one of my favorite games Fallout 1 had a amazing instruction book. I remember spending hours reading it at school trying to memorize all the controls in study hall.
    It was a interesting funny read.
    Now in 2014, times have changed. We barely get a disc with a one page instruction manual for sixty + dollars (new title) Its fucking pathetic. I hate stream services like Steam/Valve, they pretty much paved the way for this horse shit.
    A bought a copy of Final Fantasy 7 on steam, installed it. I went to go play this cool epic game, until i found out i had to register for another "Square/Enix Cloud Server account." I uninstalled it, and haven't bought a steam game since.

      Sega and Atari are companies that have kept up with providing their games on many platforms because there is demand for them. Your general statements are not really convincing me of your point. Capcom and Square enix are very much still around but the virtual console is missing many games they release simply because they dont feel there is interest in them. Im not sure if you are understanding me but I am not talking about sonic the hedehog 2 or space invaders which will be on every gaming platform known to man. Do you really believe people will just automatically migrate to cloud gaming without experiencing some kind of resistance to the huge change? I mean I know personally that the people that I game with (granted all of us are in our 20's) will not purchase digital games or use cloud services simply because we like to know that we own a physical copy of the product we purchased. It feels safer and more concrete to us when we can hold that product. I think the same can be said for the previous generation of gamers (i.e., the 80's kids). In a a video you posted a few days ago you said that the majority of gamers were above the age of 30 I believe. This means that you will essentially have to deal with a demographic group that may not like these changes. When the majority of customers don't agree / like these changes how can they proceed? Can they afford to really upset that big of a market?

    • @OmegaWeaponX2
      @OmegaWeaponX2 10 лет назад +1

      PS Plus is 50 dollars a year. Which is less than a single new game today, and in that timeframe, exactly HOW many games do you get for free? Tons. Most of them I don't even care about owning, so I really don't see the problem here. I'm also exactly ZERO percent affected by the fact that the PS4 requires ps plus to play multiplayer because... I'm already subscribed to it, and I have no plans on stopping any time soon.
      Btw, judging by your username, I'd suspect the Playstation isn't even your preferred console, so of course you'd be opposed to everything they do lol.

    • @ActionJaxonH
      @ActionJaxonH 10 лет назад +1

      OmegaWeaponX2 I won't support PS Plus or Now either. Only $50 a year? The way I see it, that's DOUBLE the cost of the console. $50 per year for 8 years (which will be the life of the console) is $400. That's the same price I paid for the PS4! It's like an $800 console, only half down and the other half on an annual payment plan. The free games aren't free- they're rented for a price. $400 for the generation to be exact. And I buy everything I want, because I like owning the copy. I like knowing I can play it today, next month, next year or twenty years from now. I like being able to sell what I paid for too, if I ever so desired. Whereas with Plus, you lose EVERYTHING in the blink of an eye, the minute you miss a payment. I just don't believe in such a premise. The games you get in exchange, most of them are old or not that great. And I've never seen a single PS Plus game that I actually wanted to play that I hadn't already purchased.

    • @OmegaWeaponX2
      @OmegaWeaponX2 10 лет назад +1

      Uh, no, you DON'T lose everything if you miss a payment, that's a load of horseshit. It all stays in your download history, so even if you're not with ps plus anymore, you can still download those same games when you renew your subscription at any time.
      Let's say you don't buy a single physical copy of a game for the next 8 years, and instead go for ps plus. $400. One new game a month, let's say that each of them was worth 20 bucks at the time it was offered free for ps plus. That's $240. Another year passes by and you get 12 more games. That's $480 of games that you have received.... and so far you've paid how much? $100. Keep in mind, it is NOT just 12 games you get in one year, it's a LOT more. Whether you find the games interesting or not is irrelevant, the value is there.
      I like owning physical copies of games as well, but only games I am really interested about, such as The Last of Us, GTA V, Dark Souls, etc. etc. If I get to play a bunch of games that I don't feel like owning for the year at a hugely discounted rate, I would say, YES PLEASE.

    • @lordgarth1
      @lordgarth1 10 лет назад +3

      Jaxon Holden To be fair to PS Plus you only lose access to those games while your subscription has lapsed. The minute you start it up again you gain access to ALL the previous games you downloaded. Now if some new games come and go while you are inactive you won't have those.

    • @faceurhell
      @faceurhell 10 лет назад +2

      OmegaWeaponX2 $50 a year is about what I spent on 50 Steam games this year, including several all-time great games.
      Also, paying just to play online multiplayer for a game you dropped upwards of $60 (plus the $60 of DLC Call of Duty and other such franchises make) is stupid.
      I get the PS Plus PS3 system (with free online), but the PS4 one is just too anti-gamer IMO, which sucks since that console has no worthy exclusives right now IMO.

    The bandwidth argument is not valid based on the fact that ISP's in the US are providing less and less bandwidth. Especially where upload bandwidth is concerned (Which would be a huge necessity for streaming a game.) You're right overall, but your idea that the Internet is 'evolving" is not based in reality. Everything you are saying is absolutely right, but I disagree that cloud gaming and computing is the future. It's simply just a gimmick. OnLive for example, was one of these cloud gaming services, but it flopped, and they're only keeping it online simply because people have bought games on it that they can't download.
    It doesn't just limit to gaming either - the whole concept of "the cloud" is merely a huge gimmick. Chrome OS is an example - it's absolutely shit. The most you can do with it is play that crappy Angry Birds game over the cloud, but it emphasises cloud storage since it has no hard drive. What if your internet goes down? You won't be able to access your files. What if Google suddenly disappears in the future for whatever reason? You're putting your files in the hands of a company whose fate you can never predict. You could lose those files forever if you rely on the cloud for your primary means of file storage, which is why you should ONLY rely on cloud storage for backup purposes.
    Large companies and enterprises will never, ever invest in a cloud storage service for this reason, so why should the consumer. The Cloud is not the future. I'm not opting in to it.

    The issue with streaming, is not the bandwidth, I live in a 3rd world country, and I have 7Mbs. The problem is the latency, Video Game companies would have to place servers all over. I really hope physical copies don;t go away, though I;ve been using steam a lot, and it's a non-issue since i can DL the games and have them, now streaming would really place us in a bad position depending on where they have the servers, and on top of that the fact that they can stop hosting the game we like to play just because they don't deem it profitable.

      *****
      I was around when games had manuals with them and to be honest I never even looked at them unless I was looking for the controls or I was anxious to play the game and was reading it on the way back home from the store. Nowadays the games show the controls in game and I order all my games online so I can play it as soon as its in my hands so I think its good that got rid of it, it will save trees that way.

    so basically you are trying to say that this is how they are planning the future of gaming and it is something that we will all just have to accept and learn to live with at some point.. when nobody buys into their shit which is what would happen from the word go what would happen? they would instantly shit theirselves and realise they had made a mistake and be forced go go in the opposite direction. ITS AS SIMPLE AS THAT. they have not got the power to do such things. they might think they have untill they realise nobody will buy into their crap. IM SORRY BUT IF THE CUSTOMERS GET TOGETHER AND SAY NO THEIR IS NOT A LOT THEY CAN DO OTHER THAN REVERSE STUPID DECISIONS LIKE MICROSOFT FOUND OUT

    End of consoles..... Look dummy, the only country to have fibre optic everywhere is South Korea, the rest of the world is not ready for mass streaming.

    well see, the big problem is that internet providers are putting caps on the data (250-500 gb). not to mention that most internet providers only increase there bandwidth every 10 years, and for most people the highest download is about 50 mb/s witch is very far away from 1 or 2 gb/s.
    I agree with you that streaming is what console devs want, but internet providers don't even like netfix, not even thinking about trying to stream with no input lang 1080p (or by that time 4k) 30-60 fps.

      In britain we get unlimited 'bandwidth' depending on the service we choose.

      partha sarathy well the cost for sony of nintendo to make faber would be very high

    Am I missing something here? I thought the service was only used for streaming past generations of games (the PS1, PS2, and PS3 eras)
    I think you need to SLOW DOWN man. We don't even know when the service is coming or if it evens works well. Let's wait for it to release before we scream doomsday.

    I fully agree man history and memories are something important. I still have my Nintendo 64 I had it since I was in elementary school. Though I wish my parents hadn't sold my super Nintendo. I never liked digital distribution except when it brought niche titles over here. I hate cloud gaming. whats the point sure you can have it all there but its not the same man its basically trapped in the network and once that is gone boom its all gone :(.no memories no looking back at that one game and saying I remember this I loved this when I was younger me and my friend use to love it. not even that only faded memories of what was it that I enjoyed back then.

    Whenever I buy a game full price I always try to buy the physical copies. Playstation Now does not concern me because I will not be using it. Streaming videogames is a stupid idea that I wont be taking part in.

    I call bullshit, this is an Overreaction.
    1.Streaming games will never (atleast in our lifetime) fully replace hard disks, not everyone has a stable enough connection to be running all the time.
    I'm sure streaming games will have a lot of instability and connection issues and a lot of people (including me) are not interested in having to wait for their game to buffer, experience LAG or even DISCONNECTING from SINGLEPLAYER mode.
    2.If this takeover were to happen you'd first have to have everyone in the western world having a completely solid and speedy internet connection. DVD's and Blu Rays are still around aren't they? Despite Netflix, Lovefilm and Hulu.
    3.Secondly, casual gamers. They make up the majority of gamers and most aren't willing to pay a monthly fee for something they only have time for once or twice a fortnight.
