I was going to write the same. At the end of the end video I still had so many questions! Who's this lovely kitty? Why was the kitty not petted? Did the kitty approve the new bed?
I appreciate how often you say, “…but we’re not gonna worry about that,” because I tend to worry about everything and gardening is a respite from that!
When you said "FLIP", I thought you were being literal. Glad to see you weren't! Very complete explanation and a soothing, quiet, teaching style. I have started two new in ground beds this year and will be looking to try this method when they are ready for refreshing. Thanks!
So fricken thorough Jacques!! You explained ideas in an accessible way that was enjoyable and relaxing. You also answered all the questions I had as I naturally thought whilst watching. I didn’t have to stop video and google anything. I feel the video was well paced. It wasn’t rushed but I also didn’t realise I’d watched a near 30 minute video. Great stuff and I look forward to the next!
Loved the details! This 2nd year novice gardener appreciated all your explanations and reasons behind every step you took! More of these types of videos please! 🙏🧡
I love your approach! Your chilled nature combined with the intelligent delivery of scientific detail is like the perfect storm for me. The only annoying thing is that I'm in the southern hemisphere and our season's are out of sync!
Hey Jacque don’t know if you will get this comment as I’m writing a bit late but I love the science in the videos i feel like you have a good balance of entertainment and science! I feel like dedicating some videos to science and some to entertaining and explaining would be beneficial but that’s just my 2 cents appreciate the videos!
I personally really enjoyed the longer form content this video provided. There are plenty of gardening channels for short-form and quick how-to content but I appreciate the more in-depth guide you provided here. As a beginner sometimes I want to see *all* of the steps because I might have never done it before or, not known the proper way to do something. I appreciated the pacing of the video being a little slower because it felt like, well, gardening!
I have been searching years YEARS for a video like this!! I ♥️ gardening; my sons not so much. 😉 One video explains to them just enough what they needs to do and just enough of “why”. I may be guilty of spending too much time on the explaining. 😆
I love for you to give the science behind your process. It's evident that you have done a lot of research and experimentation to give your audience the best information. Thank you! Also, your voice is very easy to listen to. from Southeast MO.
I LOVE the details in your videos! A lot of things in the garden benefit from a longer-form explanation. I enjoy the style of Kevin's shorter and more generalized content, but yours are more of a deep dive which I really love! It's education where it's sorely needed. PS: Cats and their need to be RIGHT in the shot at least once a video. 🤣
Great job. I agree with the commenter who said "pet the kitty!" lol. I think the detail is good for really serious gardeners but I also recommend mixing it up with some shorter, pithier content for those of us who have shorter attention spans. Just a suggestion. Having said that, I found the whole thing very helpful.
I like these details and your explanations of what things mean in a way that is not too technical and easy to understand when you have never heard that particular term before. I like the pace and what and why as we go. It makes it easy to watch instead of stressful, as some people go too fast or assume you already know stuff. Thanks again, you're doing a fantastic job with your videos!! 😊
Love the details! Also the appearance of a cat at one point. Also nice editing with the different sections on the different topics. Keep up the good work!
Awesome! I'm enjoying the casual yet very informative videos. I've been gardening for 10+ years, and I'm still learning off of people like you. A little editing advice if wanted. At 5:40 you mention plants like flowers and peppers but the camera is zoom out. Maybe take some b-roll footage (later if you are solo) of those plants while you're explaining it, instead of the zoomed out shot? Your garden is amazing and can't wait to see how the chicken run looks with the fruit trees
Great video...the details are what make your work so rewarding to watch, so never worry about giving too much information...we're going to have to call you "The Professor Jacques" since the folks who watch are expecting this very kind of "lesson"...many thanks for helping us understand how it all happens. I've been gardening and growing for many years, but never really thought about the real "mechanics" of it all...so keep up the good videos..they are very enjoyable....PS...don't ignore the cat next time...he/she was bringing you a message!!
Great details! I never thought of putting straw on my paths and then using that in the beds! OMG! I use cardboard on my paths and it looks terrible. It is very slippery when it gets icy, too. I saw my house on Google Earth and could see all that ugly cardboard..lol! This is a game changer for me. I knew about the other info, but most people probably don't and I would live to see people stop tilling! It is so destructive to the whole underground ecosystem. Thanks for your thorough approach.
It's funny that what we thought necessary in the past, we have found to be what not to do now. Everybody roto-tilled their gardens when I was a kid, or you got out there with a shovel and turned the soil manually.
I have to use cardboard in my pathways to prevent weeds and slipping when the ground is wet. I get shredded bark mulch at the city yard for free, so all my paths are covered in mulch. The worms love the cardboard and the mulch breaks down over time. It's really good all the way around.
I’m liking the details and thoroughness. I’m learning a lot from your vids. And yes, I agree with the comments. You must pet the kitty next time. So cute.
Hello Jacques! I love the details. You fill in the gaps, where other channels are missing explaining "why" you do a particular thing, or use a particular tool! Please continue to tell us why and quoting the research. We may be seeing tools that we do not own for the first time. I loved the explanation of why you chose to use the different forks, as well as the type of rake you used. I might add that it could be helpful to reference when you are planting in your video--such as the broccoli. As I watched (and I know I am behind, I was left wondering when you planted yours). I have also been following Kevin's channel for a couple of years. Your style and pace is more my speed. :-) Good work! Looking forward to more videos. -Kim in San Diego
This was incredible, Jacques! I now have a better idea of what I could have done differently with my corn this past season. This was pretty informative for me - I'm a person just starting to grow crops at home. I'm familiar with N-P-K but this carbon layer and soil amendments for seed starts was new to me. What drew me to your channel was watching Kevin sew wheat to make flour and that's the sort of thing I want to grow to be able to do. It's really great that your channel is a bit more in-depth and it gives me a purpose with my planting. Thanks so much for starting your channel. I look forward to growing my skills to be more self sufficient at home.
This is the kind of video I enjoy. You get immediately into the project, explaining each step as you go. Great job, Jacque. This is one of my favorite channels.
Appreciate that your beds are free form and not surrounded by wood frames or Birdie Beds. Been pricing the latter and they're not fitting my budget. Your down to earth, DIY and repurposing is really appreciated! Great video. Exactly what I needed. Were the broccoli plants seeded by you or bought as is?
I like doing a combination of both for sure, after using the tall raised beds I am starting to understand their benefits, like for 1 not having to crouch down all the time haha
Jackques this is an amazing video, I appreciate you explaining the uses of the tools and every step including the way you prepare admen the bed please keep doing this kind of content 💯👍🏼💚
When I saw that big ass bag of dirt I was hooked! This is a person of sophistication, and refinement. Eroded and forged by the elements to be sown and risen from the interstellar ash that is our Earth. Energy and vitality coursing throughout your roots! To bring growth, and love, peace, and most of all knowledge.
Learned a lot Jacques and I like your methodical attentiveness as well as the fact you explain things 'not in a rush' like you're racing to get through it!! 👌 🍃🍂
Nice amount of details with explanation of hows and whys. I enjoy learning about the science and techniques, which you articulate so well in your videos. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and knowledge with us Jacques. 🙏😊
I love the technicality, the step by step breakdown, and reasoning behind each move and tool usage. Illustrated the question I had about soil treatment after a harvest. Thanks, Jacques❗👏🏾
And - Yes! - the details are great! I'm just starting to learn more about mycorrhizal fungi and how it can improve garden performance. Thanks for the add'l clarification 👍
As a new gardener I liked your detailed explanation of what your doing and why. Many people will say if you want your plant to thrive do this, but then they don't say why. Thanks for the science behind gardening. I love when people do a before and after video. I live in your area so I was wondering where you got the compost from and did it get delivered?
I got this batch of compost from SPV Soils in north county, specifically the Nitro Blend has some manure nutrients but is balanced by green compost to not be too intense.
Great video bro. The thorough attention to detail was spot on and I wish to see more extensive videos like this! Nothing i would change about it but I would love to see a few videos on container gardening for all us urban gardeners with very much limited space. Pushing the limits on what can be grown in a container has always been a goal of mine and would love to see your take on it. Keep on growing and continue to educate the youth 🌱☀️
I like the details too. I saw a couple minutes, then listened while I drove to the store. And now Im watching with all the pictures which match the talk. I only missed the fast forward bits which were well worth watching. So mix n match, some longer some shorter. Glad that you're sharing tools. Thanks for the encouragement to get out there.
Excellent video. I like the details, it’s so important to understand why you do something instead of just being told to do it. Pace was great too. As an aside, I have a friend who doesn’t like RUclips videos. Every so often I will send her one on gardening and she always says thanks but didn’t really like it, for whatever reason. I sent her two of yours last week and was amazed when she called me and said she “really liked those videos”. She never likes any! Then she started talking about things you said and things she was going to try and explaining why etc. well done Jacques!
I really appreciated the level of detail. Great video. Learned a lot. I'm a super new gardener. 1st year. Now I know what to do with all the extra straw I bought over the summer.
I watched a lot of youtube videos about gardening and i can say without a doubt that i have learned from you the most, thank you so much jacque i appreciate you🙏
if it is possible can you give some info about the vegetables that can grow in areas like the middle east and how to care for them, i am trying to grow and make my own garden from dead dry land and i can't seem to find someone that talk about the same conditions that i have specifically about shading and how often to water the plants and what plants i can grow under 40-50c and no rain most of the year
very informative, thank you. I would suggest trying to keep videos to 12-15 minutes. the average view looses focus after that. splitting into more videos if needed will benefit your sub count. super happy you started your own channel!
1:15 I had to pull up some corn stalks to plant garlic--would have left them in the ground, cut-off, if not--and you could see the mycorrhizal fungi attached around the roots of it. Especially closer to the wood chip pathway I had put in a couple months before. Becoming a big proponent of grass clippings for mulch as I've been doing no-till the last couple years. From what I've read you basically want a 1:1 fungal to bacteria composition in your soil, and grass clippings tend to be 1:1. It's essentially baby greens hay. Ie more nitrogen, less weed seeds, and more surface area to break down faster. And I can get paid to create my own mulch with my push mower, or at least help out my neighbors and get it for free. I cure/dry it for two days like hay usually (unless it will rain, bc I don't want the nitrogen to wash away). Seems like a really synergistic way to garden in a urban/suburban area.
Its true that we want a balance of bacteria and fungal communities in our soils most plants will have some benefit from both even if vegetables tend to have more bacterial associations. In the past I would mulch my vegetable beds with straw and pathways with wood to help provide an ecosystem for both
It was a good speed where I could really take in all the information and it felt like an episode of "This Old House", low stress, good info, and a finished job at the end. 💯
For me the pace of the video was perfect! The amount of detail for me was great and now I know some more tools for me to invest in. I am new to gardening and you (and Kevin from Epic Gardening) have helped me in many ways. Thank you 🤩
First watching your videos today. I'd say your info is spot on and easy to grasp. Very well explained so that a person of any experience level can learn from you. Great job.
every time I view this video, I get great ideas for my problem areas! Love your channel and I hope you continue to make them and share your wealth of knowledge!
This was such an excellent video. Even here, from New England. We don't flip a lot of beds, but we do flip some. And as a relatively new gardener, I struggle with flipping, cover crops, etc. Anyway, thank you.
Love love love the experiment with the fungally dominated compost. Please do an update video when you get results. I would also like to see a similar type of experiment where you compare plant growth with living groundcover vs traditional groundcover like straw mulch.
Love the pacing of this video. Not too crammed with info yet so informative and narrated in a way that even beginner gardeners like me can understand/appreciate. Thank you!
I liked the video you are easy to listen to. I especially appreciated you showing how big the transplants were before you planted them. I'm never sure.
You've definitely got to pet kitty if you want kitty to keep the rodents out! Nicely done video. I'm using my trenching shovel to dig up the dead grass and invasive weeds so I can get the front yard in order. Your technique is what I was doing for hours. Keep up the great videos. I've subscribed even though I'm no longer in SoCal (Zone 6B/7A now). Happy Holidays!
Great video, love the detail and explanation. I think its easy to assume knowledge in an audience and skip over things that us newcomers may not know. Focusing on the one bed and expanding on the steps is always nice to see. Also I like your cat, looks like one I had when I was young.
I like the details. The only mistake you made is not petting your kitty when he or she walked by. Something to work on. LOL
Haha, she can be pretty dismissive.. .
I agree!!🤭 Although I gave him the benefit of the doubt that he felt his hands were too dirty! An elbow bump would have been fine though!💪😉
Lol, and I agree great detail.
I came here to say the same thing!

I concur!
Your attention to detail is great 👍. Your videos compliment Kevin's in greater detail. You guys make a great team.
Loved the details! This 2nd year novice gardener appreciated all your explanations and reasons behind every step you took! More of these types of videos please! 🙏🧡
love the details and science. Perfect amount of "this is why you do it this way."
I love your approach!
Your chilled nature combined with the intelligent delivery of scientific detail is like the perfect storm for me.

That is fantastic to hear, I hope to sort of have both styles mixed in to some degree but I prefer the longer form videos like this!
Nice that you give viewers a more affordable or alternative option on the tools. A way to get started without breaking the bank!
I have been searching years YEARS for a video like this!! I ♥️ gardening; my sons not so much. 😉 One video explains to them just enough what they needs to do and just enough of “why”. I may be guilty of spending too much time on the explaining. 😆

You are a natural teacher Jacques! I love the long form of this video as it allows you to take a concept from start to finish on incredible detail.
Thank you for the kind words!

Your garden is amazing and can't wait to see how the chicken run looks with the fruit trees
I for sure need to be more aware of what I am mentioning and take more b-roll, I tend to think I have way more than I actually do haha.
you could also put up a pic of the plant in question, reducing the need for b-roll footage.
Great video...the details are what make your work so rewarding to watch, so never worry about giving too much information...we're going to have to call you "The Professor Jacques"

Haha trust me, Babka, the cat, does what she wants and if she wanted pets she would have definitely let me know!
Great details! I never thought of putting straw on my paths and then using that in the beds! OMG! I use cardboard on my paths and it looks terrible. It is very slippery when it gets icy, too. I have to use cardboard in my pathways to prevent weeds and slipping when the ground is wet. I get shredded bark mulch at the city yard for free, so all my paths are covered in mulch. The worms love the cardboard and the mulch breaks down over time. It's really good all the way around.
I love how you teach. It’s the little details that I need. So thankful I found your channel
Welcome!
I’m liking the details and thoroughness. I’m learning a lot from your vids. And yes, I agree with the comments. You must pet the kitty next time. So cute.

Thanks for the kind words it is much appreciated! As for the planting date, that is a good call, in this case it was October 19th!
I feel like Jacques is built out of idealized village neighbor material.
This was incredible, Jacques! I now have a better idea of what I could have done differently with my corn this past season. This is the kind of video I enjoy. You get immediately into the project, explaining each step as you go. Great job, Jacque. This is one of my favorite channels.
I like how in-depth you go! Keep the science and wicked details coming
I like all the details.
I garden this same way.
More people need to find out about, and understand mycorhiza!!
The perfect amount of details! It made me really understand how everything ties together.
Appreciate that your beds are free form and not surrounded by wood frames or Birdie Beds. Been pricing the latter and they're not fitting my budget. Your down to earth, DIY and repurposing is really appreciated!

Needed a video on this for me and my husband’s garden! Thank you Jacques 🌱
There is nothing better than growing something from nothing!
Learned a lot Jacques and I like your methodical attentiveness as well as the fact you explain things 'not in a rush' like you're racing to get through it!! 👌 🍃🍂
I always do better following instructions if I understand the why. Thanks for sharing the science and the details. Very much appreciate your channel!
Nice amount of details with explanation of hows and whys. I enjoy learning about the science and techniques, which you articulate so well in your videos. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and knowledge with us Jacques. 🙏😊
Really appreciate all the information! Helped give me a lot to think about as I plan out my garden next year
I liked the science behind it. I’m interested in learning more about the science behind the soil
Just adding to the voices below, love the details! keep it coming!!
Loved the detail. I appreciate your style.
I like the detail. Gardening is interesting because you are always learning.
The more detail the better. That's what draws me to your channel. Thanks again.
Great tutorial Jacque
Good info without “getting in the weeds”. Always appreciate your thoughtful info.
I love the technicality, the step by step breakdown, and reasoning behind each move and tool usage. Illustrated the question I had about soil treatment after a harvest. Thanks, Jacques❗👏🏾
Great explanation! Love your videos - they feel "real!" Thanks 😊
And - Yes! - the details are great! I'm just starting to learn more about mycorrhizal fungi and how it can improve garden performance. Thanks for the add'l clarification 👍
26:12 keep the details and science coming! I find it helpful because it helps me make necessary modifications for growing in the heat of central TX.
I love your approach to the videos! A lot of useful information, which I appreciate.
More no till and living soil stuff ! It’s so very interesting and you explain it in a way that’s easy to digest :)
I always have containers going so overtime I will try to weave some container content in!
We all need details with things in life😉. Thank you for doing that👍. Have a great day 👵🏻👩🌾❣️
Details are vital for newbies like myself.
I’m a visual learner, so this is perfect!
Thanks!

I really appreciated the level of detail. Great video.
Learned a lot. I'm a super new gardener. 1st year.
Now I know what to do with all the extra straw I bought over the summer.
I LOVE details! I thought this was perfect, an excellent video!
I watched a lot of youtube videos about gardening and i can say without a doubt that i have learned from you the most, thank you so much jacque i appreciate you🙏

Thanks Jacque. I'm re watching this again. I saved it because I love the in depth scientific info. Music pick is soothing too
very informative, thank you. I would suggest trying to keep videos to 12-15 minutes. the average view looses focus after that. splitting into more videos if needed will benefit your sub count. super happy you started your own channel!
Jacques, great video. Details are better than none. In my humble opinion, the more details the better.
Thanks Jacques, video was perfect, I appreciate all the details!
Well-paced video with just the right blend of amendments.... great tips, good facts and your lovely personal touch. Just let you be you!
Very Good Video Jacque, don't worry about the talking points, you are doing fine
Great explanation of the soil food web! Really enjoy the vibe of your videos...makes me feel like I can do this, too! Thanks!
1:15 I had to pull up some corn stalks to plant garlic--would have left them in the ground, cut-off, if not--and you could see the mycorrhizal fungi attached around the roots of it. Especially closer to the wood chip pathway I had put in a couple months before.

Yes all the science please!!! It’s a game changer. Soil biology!
Great job explaining the reasons behind this system! Thanks for sharing details! You can't be too detailed when it comes to the garden.
I love it when gardeners get sciency!
Keep it coming, Garden Hermit! 👨🏼🌾
I like all the details and reasons for what you do. Your videos are immensely helpful to me. Thx, Jacques! Your channel is top notch!
good level of detail
It was a good speed where I could really take in all the information and it felt like an episode of "This Old House", low stress, good info, and a finished job at the end. 💯
love the detail. im enjoying learning from you. keep it up
We love the details! Your videos have been great! Looking forward to your next one.
Thank you for this very informative and practical video. Just the sort of expertise I was looking forward to learning from you!
For me the pace of the video was perfect! The amount of detail for me was great and now I know some more tools for me to invest in. I am new to gardening and you (and Kevin from Epic Gardening) have helped me in many ways. Thank you 🤩
I enjoyed the video and look forward to more!
Love this Mr. Hermit ... Love your channel and I DO love the detail ... thank you! Ditto the "pet the kitty" comment 🥰
Great video! I like how you added the partially broken down straw from your path to the bed. I learned a lot from this video.
well paced video. I love your videos.
First watching your videos today. I'd say your info is spot on and easy to grasp. Very well explained so that a person of any experience level can learn from you. Great job.
Never too much detail....I learned so much. Good Job!
every time I view this video, I get great ideas for my problem areas! Love your channel and I hope you continue to make them and share your wealth of knowledge!
Thanks Jacques for explaining the lasagna method. Your details are so helpful.
This was such an excellent video. Even here, from New England. We don't flip a lot of beds, but we do flip some. And as a relatively new gardener, I struggle with flipping, cover crops, etc. Anyway, thank you.
Jacques, the details help a lot specially for newish gardeners like me. Thanks.
Love love love the experiment with the fungally dominated compost. Please do an update video when you get results. I would also like to see a similar type of experiment where you compare plant growth with living groundcover vs traditional groundcover like straw mulch.
Living mulch is something I would like to try, I need to find the right plant for my area that works with the way I like to work first!
@@jacquesinthegarden If you've published such a video, could you please let me know which one is it? Thanks.
I love how you break it downs including steps, like Tools! Keep it up Jacques 😄
I learned so much watching this video. I wasn’t going to plant anything this winter. But now I’m considering it.
Love the pacing of this video. Not too crammed with info yet so informative and narrated in a way that even beginner gardeners like me can understand/appreciate. Thank you!
Came back again and watched for a second time. So good and detailed. Love it. 🥦
Great lesson, and I appreciate the science, rationale, and background. I'd love a broad fork, but it's not in the budget. Beautiful flip!
I liked the video you are easy to listen to. I especially appreciated you showing how big the transplants were before you planted them. I'm never sure.
The details were perfect. Thanks
I'm really enjoying your presentation style. You deliver the "hows" and "whys" very well. Thanks, man!
The in depth explanations are great, its nice to see a so cal garden so productive:)
