11:50 pepper plants can get huge in tropical climates! I've actually seen a few pepper "trees" around here. They're gorgeous when they're loaded with fruit

I had no idea my eggplants could've done it...darn, I had some really good chinese eggplant plants last year. hopefully this year they'll be healthy too and I can try next winter.

It kept some leaves but dropped most of them. when the world started warming up it grew more leaves even before I put it outside. I got another year out of it but I was too busy to overwinter it again this year
I over winter my peppers and I live in MN. I brought them inside and put them by windows that get a fair bit of sunlight throughout the day. They have been inside about a month and already a lot of them are growing new leaves and trying to come out of dormancy. Its fairly easy and Jacques does a great job describing the process

Thanks, this is my first winter with eggplants and peppers. I have a small garden space, so overwintering in pots for most of them will be the most efficient use of space. It will also let me plan my space a little better next year.
Perfect timing for me for the video! I love the long format video! All my eggplants and peppers are potted Zone 8A. I carry them in and out of the house depending on the temp at night just trying to keep them alive. I'll trim them like you did, thank you!
With this information, I can try to overwinter my peppers and eggplants. My season has been difficult for eggplants especially. Getting a headstart in the spring in Zone 4 Norway would be amazing. Fingers crossed!

I still have a ghost chili from 2013. Save about 20-25 peppers each year, under a couple shop lights. Think containers are the way to go with peppers overall bc of that. I only cut back most of the foliage. Seems to work fine with a couple leaves on it.
Very cool . I saw a video recently on Huw Richards' channel of a woman in Denmark I think it was, where she transplanted things like celery, silver beet etc into her greenhouse in the ground for winter. Their winters are extremely harsh, as are mine so I'm gonna copy both you and her. You'd have a huge start in spring, I can see that. You could probably take cuttings of that eggplant too. terrific video

I’m trying overwintering in pots this year because the 5- day hard freeze we had that killed all our citrus scared me. But we did overwinter peppers in the ground before and wow did they produce the second year. We are in the gulf coast. Great video. Lots of excellent tips
Really helpful information. I’m in zone 5b and our winters can be pretty harsh, (Chicago). Last year I tried to save some plants before temperatures dipped below 30 and I wound up bringing in aphids. I didn’t prepare clean soil because I didn’t plan ahead. I lost all my indoor plants and my prized Meyer lemon tree. I wish I saved my yellow pepper plants. This year I started them indoors and at this point in the season my newly started plants are still only about two inches tall! I’m definitely going to plan ahead this year and overwinter my peppers and eggplants.

This is fantastic information -- thank you. I'm in zone 10 and I did overwinter my peppers outdoors, but I did not think to use the empty real estate for lettuce. That is something that would be really helpful with all the rain we've gotten. I also didn't realize how detrimental all the rain may have been. The peppers are looking a little ragged, so I'll give them protection from the next several rains we have forecasted and get some lettuce seeds going as well.

I live in San Diego. I overwinter my peppers in the garden. I prune them - not as much as you do. Some of my pepper plants finished 3 seasons now and most of them the second. They are quite massive now.

I'm in East San Diego County, and I potted up my peppers about a month ago because I wanted to plant out winter veggies in their space. I just noticed the 8 inch tall Shishito pepper, which gets a little sunlight, has flowers and fruit on it. I overwintered a couple sweet peppers last year in mostly shade, and they were fine without much sun. I got zero frost last year, but looks like we might get some this year since our night time temps are already running low.
I appreciate this guidance as I will need to take a deep breath before being brave and cutting back my eggplant! It was easier to cut back my peppers last year, they had grown pretty gangly. This was my first year with the eggplant and the plants looked really good although they really didn't produce very well at all. I only got one smaller eggplant fruit out of the six I planted! Lots to work on to improve for next year...

I wanted to note this is also useful for pheano hunting peppers as well if your cross pollinating or self pollinating to selectively breed for different climates, or other reasons. As a example if you move and find your favourite crops can’t handle the new conditions by growing them out and picking your desired outlier’s and over wintering them your keeping your outlier mother plants to re pollinate the baby’s next year that are showing the traits your looking for you can save your self a few years of guessing what will work or not work for your desired outcome or even slowly keep traits of one plant we’ll introducing traits from another. For instance If you like the taste flavour from one but need the cold hardiness of another by cross pollination and then back crossing to the mother you can help narrow down between the best of both worlds with out overwhelming your self with to many unwanted variety’s and really narrow down your selecting process
This is a good and interesting point, there is some selection you can be doing if you rogue out the outliers that did poorly. Overwintering plants that did well in the season is more likely to lead to success

Yes! I’m in Texas and I’ve got an ichiban eggplant that’s absolutely massive as well as several bell peppers and a Chile pepper that i want to try and preserve :) I am not exactly sure if I will leave the Chile and eggplant in my raised bed, though. I’m worried about the frost killing my plants!!
Nice to hear that even in southern CA, eggplant don't do much in the winter. They do like it really hot and sunny. Maybe mine in the GH get so bug-ridden is because they are so stressed out by the cold and dwindling sun.
I attempted overwintering in 2020, I ended up with dried chilies 😂 I attempted again with two hot peppers from last summer, one is looking a little droopy and sad the other looks ok, I'm going to repot both tomorrow and see how things go.

Experience in Colorado, Zone 5B. Overwintered Shishitos (in my greenhouse that gets down into the 40's in the winter) that I grew i pots on my lanai over the summer. Both times the bottom of the plant basically died off, but there was a lot of new growth on the top and got great production in the 2nd year. This year I planted 2 peppers in the GH same time as those outside - Jimmy Nardello and Corbaci. They did great all summer, suffered some kind of damage in the fall (mice? - whole branches taken off), but have recovered nicely and put on new growth right away, from the base where the damage was and are now freely flowering and fruiting. Will be interesting to see how they do as winter progresses (we have had a pretty mild fall so far); the shishito looks like crap, just like last year, but growing new green leaves on top. Also grew a Japanese eggplant in the GH - it is surviving and flowering, but has lots of bugs already (aphids and whiteflies) which I am fighting, but my experience has been that eggplant are bug magnets and I have never gotten one through the winter without being totally overrun with bugs, no matter what I did.
@@jacquesinthegarden When we were living in NY, the flea beetles were all over my eggplant every year - had to put covers on them when they were young to get them through; in Colorado, don't seem to have the same flea beetle problem, but they still seem much more prone to aphids, whiteflies and spider mites in the greenhouse. Never sure whether to pull them out so they don't spread, or to leave them as a trap plant and hope everything stays there.
The red bunching onions might be what I've had for years, I don't remember where I got them but they are red and don't make a bulb but have a good taste, really good cut up in salads or tossed in scrambled eggs.
Found it! ** Nevermind I see the pablano plant and it looks similar to my mystery yellow pepper plant. Does this same example apply to a much larger pepper plant like say a 4ft bell pepper?
I’ve been meaning to try it and would have this year if I didn’t move right as the garden was wrapping up. My community garden and my new house were about an hour away, so moving plants isn’t quite practical for a test like this. I think NW Oregon it could work out. It doesn’t snow much but it also doesn’t have much sun in winter either. If you need to keep it from being really wet then definitely cover it as it will rain all winter.
6B here, St. Louis area but on the IL of the Mississippi. I tried this last year, but everything was wrong. I used sandbags (had them leftover from building high tunnel), didn't water enough. Thanks for the video, knowledge=confidence. Edit- doing eggplant (BB and Japanese) and a bunch of different peppers this year.

The best part of overwinter eggplant is that your yield goes up dramatically the following year, for at about 3 years and then it wanes

My household got a spot at a community garden last year, but we're still new to growing vegetables and fruits, so I find your videos very helpful even though we live in completely different climates (here it varies from -20C in winter to +30C in summer). I especially appreciate when you mention that a technique is different for colder climates because I can quickly identify the information to use and the information to search for on a specific topic.

Experience in Colorado, Zone 5B. Overwintered Shishitos (in my greenhouse that gets down into the 40's in the winter) that I grew i pots on my lanai over the summer. Both times the bottom of the plant basically died off, but there was a lot of new growth on the top and got great production in the 2nd year. This year I planted 2 peppers in the GH same time as those outside - Jimmy Nardello and Corbaci. They did great all summer, suffered some kind of damage in the fall (mice? - whole branches taken off), but have recovered nicely and put on new growth right away, from the base where the damage was and are now freely flowering and fruiting. Will be interesting to see how they do as winter progresses (we have had a pretty mild fall so far); the shishito looks like crap, just like last year, but growing new green leaves on top. Japanese eggplant in the GH - it is surviving and flowering, but has lots of bugs already (aphids and whiteflies) which I am fighting, but my experience has been that eggplant are bug magnets and I have never gotten one through the winter without being totally overrun with bugs, no matter what I did.
This year my eggplant got absolutely wrecked by flea beetles, which I have never seen before this year, apparently they are infatuated with eggplant!
@@jacquesinthegarden When we were living in NY, the flea beetles were all over my eggplant every year - had to put covers on them when they were young to get them through; in Colorado, don't seem to have the same flea beetle problem, but they still seem much more prone to aphids, whiteflies and spider mites in the greenhouse. Never sure whether to pull them out so they don't spread, or to leave them as a trap plant and hope everything stays there.
The red bunching onions might be what I've had for years, I don't remember where I got them but they are red and don't make a bulb but have a good taste, really good cut up in salads or tossed in scrambled eggs.

I’m going to try over wintering my peppers here in 9a. May need to burlap them for a bit but we dont get too cold too long.
I’ve been meaning to try it and would have this year if I didn’t move right as the garden was wrapping up. My community garden and my new house were about an hour away, so moving plants isn’t quite practical for a test like this. I think NW Oregon it could work out. It doesn’t snow much but it also doesn’t have much sun in winter either. If you need to keep it from being really wet then definitely cover it as it will rain all winter.
6B here, St. Louis area but on the IL of the Mississippi. I tried this last year, but everything was wrong. I used sandbags (had them leftover from building high tunnel), didn't water enough. Thanks for the video, knowledge=confidence.

Thank you for this video, very informative. I am getting ready to prune a bell pepper that has overwintered in the ground. This will be its second growing year. I, too, am in 10b. any rules on how many nodes I should leave on the stems when I prune?
