    I related to this man on a personal level. I divorced my wife a couple of years ago, and even though I have worked hard to be there for my kids regularly, it hasn't been easy. I've struggled financially. I struggled for a while with alcoholism. I have struggled with eating too much. I was 450 pounds last year.
    I watched this movie with my kids earlier this year, and we all ugly cried. Today, I'm 385 pounds and continue to work toward a better future. Health improvements aside, my relationship with my children has been my greatest triumph. We are closer than we ever were before the divorce.
    Ash, you're right about this movie serving as motivation. Motivation for better relationships, better health, and honesty.

I was struggling with money at the time, so that one meal was like a single can of chili, a bologna sandwich, things like that. I don't know you're familiar with Brendan's story but he suffered from abuse from someone in the film industry and he was away from it for years and years, dealing with it and - if I'm not mistaken - he got sick too. But he decided to comeback from this movie. He also suffered a lot with people judging how he aged and how much he changed from that handsome man in the 00s. When The Whale was screened he got a standing ovation and cried a lot.

      I still haven't cried in front of anyone during a movie, BUT "Inside Out" ALMOST did me in (i.e. in front of my roommates). Actually it DID "do me in" in another way: Since I went to such great effort to suppress tears, the suppression actually felt like it hurt my brain! Then... after the movie was over, I discovered I wanted MORE tearjerker movies (which is extremely unusual for me) PROBABLY because something "still needed to be let out" lol. After some research I found out the actual "wanting" to let tears out isn't actually that weird (because apparently, feel-good brain endorphins often come with them). So that's what made me into a tearjerker seeker lol.

    • @sathvamp1
      @sathvamp1 2 месяца назад

      @@bellz9440 I've definitely heard stuff about Soul... I don't yet have easy access to it though. BUT I did get a chance to watch (then re-watch repeatedly since it was so good) "Sing 2" ... there was one part that really got me in that one, the first time at least. Once I found some more (after "Inside Out") that "worked on me"... Interstellar was the second one (which I watched alone, so I definitely let the catharsis happen!). Followed by a good handful more... especially "The Land Before Time", "Hachi a Dog's Tale", the Turkish version of "Miracle in Cell No. 7", "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", and a few others.
      Funny story about crying "almost" in front of my mom during a movie: During my second [adulthood] watch of "The Land Before Time" with her, there was actually this box in the room between us that, if if leaned forward slightly, would hide me from view, which I took full advantage of during certain parts!

    There's several causes for why obese people continue to eat even their health declines. One is that longterm obesity causes leptin resistance, which makes going back to even a maintenance diet feel like starvation every hour of the day. An actual weight loss diet feels even worse. It's not comparable to the experience of slightly overweight but metabolically healthy people eating salads for a few weeks to slim back down. Leptin resistance is like phantom pain - misfiring signals that cause undue suffering disconnected from the person's actual physiological status.
    Another thing is immediate vs distant reward. At morbid obesity, it can take months or even years of Olympic level discipline and misery to get healthy-but the relief of eating junk is only seconds away at any time. Imagine a horrible drug withdrawal that takes 18 months to subside. Now reaching for that "hit" of junk food might seem less nonsensical, even though it's still destructive. And eating is often the only thing that brings relief to these people. They see nothing but ceaseless ridicule and disgust in the eyes of others, to the point where mere avoidance is the closest thing they'll ever get to affection. They can't engage in daily activities that most take for granted. They can't even take pride in the deferred reward of some longterm project or goal, because their long term probably won't exist.
    It's the mother of all vicious circles. Only some make it out.

    Since The Whale, I almost knew every movie you reacted on, but not this one. So I watched it first and then watched your reactions. This movie is genius. So much details (Pepsi light bottle) and things I noticed after rewatching with you guys. It's so depressing and has a lot of symbolisms, but pure reality at the same time. SPOILER: The ending shows that, even what he has gone through, there is something good, what gives him the will and strength to "rise and shine". Also that there is hope and he got what he wished for. The "beautiful" Essay read by his daughter, the one of few good things in his miserable life.
    There are so many things people really expierience in real life like this, and it's daily routine. And the moviemakers managed to show, how challenging the simplest things can be, as someone who is in a similar situation. Bathing-and-shaving scene... to "look good". The key he can't pick up, and he has no access (to himself). Even with the wheelchair he was "happy" about. So much symbolisms. Just outstanding...
    Especially after the pandemic, where people got shut in there own walls. What a perfect time to bring up such a movie. A lot of people will understand, and a lot of people won't. The pain, the sickness, the suffering, the cruelty... but also, the little beautiful things, which become more beautiful, because of the sad circumstances Brendan Frasier is incredibly performing. Frasier has been gone through to a lot of downfalls in his personal life, which is obviously the reason, why he could connect so good with this main character.
    If the purpose of a movie is to deliver feelings, then Frasier absolutely nailed it. But not only him. All (I believe 6) actors were totally believable. And to see "Mad Max" again... Wow. I am really impressed by this movie. Thank you for your recommendation Ash and Hannah. 👍👍👍
