- Dans ce documentaire "Au cœur des Jam Sessions Mythiques du Montreux Jazz Festival", on t'ouvre les portes d'un tradition de la musique live qui perdure depuis 1967 à Montreux. Les jams sessions réunissent des musiciens légendaires qui se joignent à de jeunes talents pour des improvisations d’anthologie. Elles sont reconnues pour leur excellence. On ne sait jamais à l'avance ce qu'il s'y passe, et c'est en ça qu'elles sont magiques!

This comment is rather brutal however an honest and factual point of view. The small amount of actual video footage in this documentaire sadly has zero resemblance to what actually happens at the jam nights in the Memphis bar. I have been visiting Montreux Jazz festival for the past 6 years always in hope the jam nights would deliver something entertaining from the public that go there .
I would not want the gig as I am now too old to be up all night but I am very confused as to who books the house band and why? As individual musicians it is clear they have studied Jazz improvisation to a high standard but as a band its a souless groovless racket. More people leave the venue than stay. The bar is always busy due to the sheer amount of people at Montreux but what should be a packed out fun vibeing venue with huge queues to the bar is a room with people constantly coming and going and an empty bar. The house band over indulge in long solo's that are meaningless scales resulting in songs lasting over 20 minutes. Maybe I have misunderstood what the night is supposed to be? Is it a night for the general public to get up and play and sing or a showcase for the house band?
Last week I witnessed several people singing on stage and painfully struggling to get through the songs due the fact the house band have very little knowledge of being able to play "Songs" as most of the night they are playing over 2 chords with endless self indulging solo's with 90% of the audience bored senseless. As a professional musician for over 41 years I understand its impossible to know every song thats ever been written however there is a basic library of songs any pro musician should know.
When a singer wants to sing the song " Summertime" the band should be able to play this relatively simple song. The girl managed to ignore the house bands idea of how it should go and sang over the train wreck of chords being played.
The Bill Withers ( Grover Washington) song " Just the 2 of us" is a song any musician at Montreux Jazz offering there services as " Backing musicians" should be able to play. After sitting listening to the house band clearly haveing no idea how this song goes I went to the stage and ask the very nice young girl in charge how she feels the band are doing? I take my hat of to her as she was very quick witted and confidently answer " Oh this is a remix version"
When the likes of Jacob Collier get up and last year a saw Nathan East and several other pro musicians on stage like you show in this youtube clip its great but that is sadly NOT the true story of " Jam night".
The Montreux Bookers need to wake up to what is going on and book a band that can actually play real songs and be competent in backing the public to a high standard when they want to get up and sing or play. This would result in far more enjoyable evening for everyone and also encourage singers /players to get up rather than just leave the bar. Yes I feel very frustrated about the situation at Montreux Jam nights . I also feel I am in a position to comment having been playing music for almost 50 years. Travelled the world many times worked for the BBC and worked alongside some of the best musicians on the planet.
Hey there! I understand. We usually see things through the lens of our experiences. Thanks for sharing yours. Jam Nights are either amazing or shitty because of how unexpected they are. We wanted to share what we experienced over there and that was unforgettable. Of course it depends on who's playing and their level of practice 💫

Le festival peut être en décadence (decadance?) la jam n’en reste pas moins un lieu magique, et le public ne s’y trompe pas! Ça fait 3 ans que j’y vais et je trouve que si le monde est décadent, ce qui se passe au Memphis en est l’opposé.
