Topsy Turvy Strawberry Planter Review

  • This worked well for us three years ago- we got lots of strawberries- and we are trying it again. Check it out here- tinyurl.com/Top... The key to success with this, especially as the temperature warms up, is to keep it well watered- everyday! And turn it 1/4 or 1/3 every few days so all the plants have their time in the sun. That is about it. If you have followed the steps correctly to set your plants in the planter you should get a good crop of strawberries. Our biggest problem with our "in-ground" garden is squirrels. They eat everything once it gets more than a few inches tall. But they never bothered our plants in the Topsy Turvy Planters.

    Hi, thought you might want to know: I got these topsy turvy things at Big Lots for $1! I got 6 of them. I'm going to try growing other things in them, besides strawberries.

    Even if it did only last roughly 3 years. Still cheap enough and a good investment. Easily just package up a few packs and sell them to make the money to buy a new one once you see wear showing. None the less, great video! I am looking to try it out this year, just gotta wait until spring more so arrives as we still have about 5 feet of snow up here in canada. Can't wait!

      ***** but its going into the spring, and so a bunch has started to melt over the last week. But supposed to get a little bit more over the next couple days. Been finding over the last few years Spring and Autumn don't seem to exist anymore. It jumps from hot to cold and vice versa, no easing into it.

    How many strawberries would you say you got each season from one Topsy turvy? Do you get multiple quarts? I get frustrated buying them at store when 50% or more are bad when I go to use them the next day! It's too late in season now but never too early to get ideas for next summer.

    I just filled my planter up for the first time a few days ago, and I'm nervous about overwatering. I gave it a good hearty drink for the initial watering, but after that don't the plants on the top get too much water if I need to water enough to get water to run down all the way to the bottom row? Your thoughts?

    • @EpicReviewGuys
      @EpicReviewGuys  10 лет назад

      I think the water will run down along the inside edges of the plastic to the bottom. Never had a problem with the bottom plants- but the plants on top will dry out pretty quickly if I miss a day or two of watering. Of course it is over 90 degrees everyday here already.

      I kept the top off my planter and dug a small hole the size of my fist in the middle . I watered and then came back to it after watering other plants and dosed it again . The center cup seemed to hold a little bit of watee and let it soak it slower . Idk. I just watered it twice a day on hot days. Early morning and before dinner

    Ok, so these are just the plastic hanging bag?
    No soil, no seeds?
    Amazon has these hanging bags made from a pete type material. It holds the strawberry plants ,come with holder and hook. 3 of the hangers are $10 I almost bought this, bc i thought it came with starting material. At least seeds. Well thank you for this, i was mislead and now I'm not. Going to try the other bags, instead of these plastic bags

    I know this is late. But how did the tomatoes grow with the strawberries? Did it work?

    • @EpicReviewGuys
      @EpicReviewGuys  8 лет назад

      +ChaRang Milleman Yes, that was a few years back but we did eat both from the plants. By next spring though the planter wasn't in such good shape.

      EpicReviewGuys i'm curious about the yield differential-Topsy Turvy vs normal strawberry bed and or the tomato plant that you decided to use. Question: do you get more strawberries by using this apparatus or the same amount or less?

    I purchased one of these for a friend but didn't realize she is allergic to strawberries! Can I plant something else in the holes? How did your tomato plants do? What about cucumbers? Herbs? Has anyone tried something else with this strawberry planter?

      Hi Elizabeth- the strawberry planter should work fine for lots of plants. My tomato plants did fine. Cucumbers might work if they aren't so heavy that they wouldn't pull off the plant without resting on the ground.

      I had a dollor special one and it had five holes in it. I planted a cheerry tomato which produced well , big cherry fruits produced. I also planted two diferent peppers cerano and jalapeno.. both did great. They grow sideways then grow upards . Kinda funny. I tried basil,, did awsome. And i tried bush bean. It did well too. Experiment because different veggies do not like to be hung. Or upside down. Herbs seem to do well. Rootspace determines alot ... cramp the roots and it seems to stunt growth of the plant. Herbs use shallow roots. Just remember to check water frequently. These dry out fast
