Morris talks about his trilogy. You cannot consume this documentary on its own. You have to watch Fog of War, Standard Operating Procedure, and The Unknown Known. They are an encyclopedia on how smart men can go so wrong because they cannot get past the hubris of their need to be great.
The US War on Vietnam began long before Johnson. In his book "Mandate for Change 1954" Ike said: "I have never talked or corresponded with a person knowledgeable in Indochinese affairs who did not agree that had elections been held at the time of the fighting, possibly 80 per cent of the population would have voted for the communist Ho Chi Minh". Ike stopped that election by creating a US military theme park called "South Vietnam". And that was after we'd armed the French to the teeth to re colonize Vietnam.
You watch this and Ken Burns documentary and realize that it had nothing to do with actually stopping communism & instead was always about getting reelected. Sickening.
Robert! Dude! You failed us! You failed your Country! You constantly lied and then you left because you wanted others to take the fall. Pitiful Dude! One might even say "chickenshit!" I sure would. I was a helicopter pilot over there fighting your war. Where were you?
Presuming that you are tagging Americans as "bastards" for going into Vietnam, I would have to suggest to you that you are also a "bastard" since Australia was one of the allied nations who went in to defend South Vietnam for Communist take-over. The allied democratic nations were the USA, South Vietnam, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos, with the Philippines, Spain, and Taiwan in supporting roles. By your crass logic, all of these nations are "bastards", right?
ERIK: Are you actually attempting to classify South Vietnam as a "democratic" nation... or is that a typo?? To classify the Diem regime as "democratic" is AT BEST a far-fetched hoax... and it's the reason we (USA) were really in that war ~ because Diem had such a non-democratic & oppressive dictatorship, that the citizenry were CRYING for communism (or any other form of government) that would appear less brutal than Diem's "democratic" hoax. Frankly, in the early 60's, the same could be said of the Philippines (under Marcos), Thailand & Cambodia - and ANY state in the USA south of the Mason-Dixon line... it's not like we Americans were setting the best example of democracy, either.
