  • Excerpts from the film 'The Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara' meant to elucidate what we are really getting into when we start wars and give individuals the ability to annihilate our planet.
Robert Strange McNamara served under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson from 1961 to 1968 as US Secretary of Defense and as a Captain in the Air Force for 3 years during World War 2. He knows more about American war policies probably moreso than any man alive. He was also the architect of the Vietnam war, but resigned from office in 1968 after the Tet Offensive because it was a catastrophe and the American people had found out the US government had been lying through their teeth about what was happening in Vietnam. Hopefully his faults will one day save us from our own.

An ancient relic have I found. An 11 year old you tube clip with 10 comments all 8 years or older, and not one like amongst them. Inconceivable. May God have mercy on our souls.

`The fog of war` is an excellent documentary. I have studied this movie countless number of times, in fact I own several copies. I strongly recommend watching a few times America. In 1961 Kennedy exposed the new world order and it`s mechanisms. In 1962 he saved us from nuclear war. In 1963 he announed the withdraw of toops in Vietnam. This enraged certain factions. Shortly after in 1963 he was murdered in the most vulgar way, in front of his wife and the American public, followed by his brother

You have to respect MacNamara's ability for self-criticism. That's a rare thing in world leaders.

the caveat in his position is that he was at death's doorstep and had nothing to lose, but hey at least he was willing to divulge his position and rationalize the decisions that happened during his tenure. I sometimes wonder and wish Cheney and other controversial figures into the 21st century would do documentaries like this

I went to West Point and saw this in high school. I have forced my friends and family through great pain to watch this documentary. It's been my life goal to make this mandatory watch for every military leader to watch and read McNamara's book Ghost.

I remember reading a famous article -- McNamara and 3 others were the authors. I studied it in 1982, when it was published. The four wrote a deeply thoughtful article about what nuclear deterrence should and should not be. I didn't fully agree with that article then -- my ideas differ more from the mainstream than McNamara's -- and that is still true. But if the US and allies had followed McNamara's advice, in 1982 and 2003 (when the film for this RUclips was made), the world would now be a safer place than it is.

In 1947 the war office became the defence department and ushered in the era of the boogy man and the defence against that boogy man.
Trillions handed to private companies to provide defence and the only way to judge its worth is that you’ve not been attacked and when you are attacked the solution to those attacks, more money for defence.
A nations people gets poorer, sicker and more divided every year yet defence spending is never lowered.
