- After 108 days of learning Greek on Duolingo and with my iTalki teachers, I felt it was time to take my Greek practice out into the real world. We headed to Elate Gyros and Souvlaki bar in Sydney where we met the awesome Stefanos who was kind, and patient, enough to let me test my fledgling linguistic skills.
There were a few "errs" and stalls but we I got there in then end and was rewarded for my efforts with an epic souvlaki plate. If you are ever in Sydney and looking for a great Greek feed be sure to check them out - www.facebook.c....

I also do some lessons with Greek teachers 1-2 times per week on italki which I think has helped too. I find duolingo good for listening to new words and learning new vocabulary but I would not have understood a lot of the grammar or rules without a teacher also to explain and ask questions. What language are you learning?
Greek is incredibly hard. Μπράβο ρε, Kevin, μεγάλε! You did great. Practice makes perfect. Listening to music, helps, too. 🙌🤘🏽🇬🇷
Hey Zsis, people keep saying that but I prefer to look at it as challenging rather than difficult, and it's a challenge that I am enjoying and finding extremely rewarding. I definitely do hit plateaus, but I just try and be consistent with practicing, try and speak as much as I can and hopefully I can get there in the end! And yes, Music helps and funnily enough today was the first time listening to the radio in Greek and as annoying as ads are they are helpful to listen to and pick up words too.
100% agree. Because advertisements use robot voice actors that say words correctly (without regional accents) and are a good source of new words. Enjoy, brother.
Bravo Kevin, it's not an easy feat. I know that personaly since I've come to live to Germany with exactly 0 german... You're gonna make it, if you're not shy. Greeks are very communicative people and happy to see people try at least.

I love the video! I've been studying Greek for a month and a half straight now, and I could understand about 85% of what you said (not sure I could come up with it on my own like you yet though 🙂). No need to be nervous...most Greeks love that you are learning the language, and will be patient and supportive. Greek is incredibly difficult to learn. I know how to conversate in Greek because I grew up with Greek speaking parents. My reading and writing (in Greek) is not so great, even after a few years of Greek school as a child). My children tried but were unable to learn to speak..though they do understand some words.

Well done for the effort to learn and speak Greek. Reading and pronunciation isn't that difficult. Grammar is... But for simple things like ordering food or shopping you'll do fine in no time.
Yes, I’m getting the hang of ordering basic things. To be honest just that was my originally goal but now I’ve done that I would like keep improving and have proper conversations. Thanks for the encouragement!

I lived in Athens back in the '90s for four years, sadly most Greeks weren't this patient in the beginning. They immediately cut into English to speed the conversation up. Eventually I became fluent. Good grasp on the conjugation of verbs! For me the genders were a royal pain in the a**.
Probably city life in general. How’d you enjoy living Athens overall?
@@ΜαθαίνωΕλληνικά I loved it. The best years of my life. Loved the care free lifestyle that focused on socializing with friends over coffee, long leisurely meals, going to the beach and enjoying the amazing weather. The people were friendly, at least outside Athens where life was less stressful.

Μπράβο Κέβιν! Πού μένετε; Εγώ είμαι από Θεσσαλονίκη, πρόσφατα ήρθαμε με τον άντρα μου Νέα Υόρκη. Είναι Αμερικανός (οι γονείς του με καταγωγή από Νιγηρία), προλάβαμε και ταξιδέψαμε στο Dallas Texas, πήγαμε στην ελληνορθόδοξη εκκλησία της Αγίας Τριάδας, μας άρεσε πολύ, νιώσαμε σαν να ήμασταν στην Ελλάδα! Βοήθησε βέβαια και ο καλός καιρός στο Τέξας!

If Marina could find our great old Greek movies/cinema and put subtitles, it's gonna help him tremendously. Besides, our ancestors set up in stone as to who is Greek. First, he who has both parents Greek and secondly, he who receives the Greek education. Obviously, the first isn't achievable, but, the second and most important, it is. All Greeks grow up seeing our old movies, like, Vougiouklaki, Laskari, Karezi, Aulonitis, Voutsas, Veggos, Heliopoulos etc! 🤣 So, let him become a Greek by doing that!

Νιώθω πολύ όμορφα, όταν διαβάζω και σιγά -σιγα, ξεπερνάω (συγνώμη που στα γράφω στα ελληνικά...) τον παράγοντα της ντροπής, όπως και την τελειομανία.
Όπως θα 'χεις διαπιστωσει ισως κι εσύ, ο καθένας εκτιμά την προσπάθεια ενός ξένου να μιλήσει στην γλώσσα του και το οποιο λάθος του "μαθητή" είναι τόσο, μα τόσο χαριτωμένο!
Συνέχισε και μην τα παρατάς! Σευχαριστουμε που διάλεξες να μάθεις μια τόσο δύσκολη γλώσσα! Καλά να περάσετε στην Ελλάδα! 🥳
Ευχαριστώ. 6 μήνες τώρα. σιγά σιγά βελτιώνομαι. Θα προσπαθήσω να κάνω μερικά βίντεο με την πρόοδό μου τις επόμενες εβδομάδες πριν πάω σπίτι. Τα σχόλια και τα σχόλιά σας με βοηθούν να μάθω. Ευχαριστώ!
@@ΜαθαίνωΕλληνικά Προσωπικά, θα προτιμούσα, αν μπορείς, να κάνεις ένα βίντεο στο οποίο να μας εξηγείς τι μέθοδο ακολουθείς.
Πχ πόση ώρα διαβάζεις κάθε μέρα, αν βλέπεις βίντεο και επαναλαμβάνεις στα ελληνικά τις λέξεις, αν χρησιμοποιείς flash-cards ή post-it, αν κάνεις λίστες με νέες λέξεις που απομνημονεύεις, ή αν προσπαθείς να θυμάσαι τις λέξεις μέσα σε κάποιο context.
Επίσης,έχεις στο μυαλό σου καποιον συγκεκριμένο στόχο? Πχ να μπορείς να διδάξεις ελληνικά σε αγγλόφωνους, ή να μπορείς απλώς να μιλάς σε 2 χρόνια?
Βομβαρδισμος ερωτήσεων 😀Λατρεύω τις ξένες γλώσσες. Χτες, είδα μια ομιλία στο TedX πάλι σε σχέση με την γλωσσομάθεια. Ειναι τόσο ωραίο να σε παθιάζει κάτι! Άλλοι τρελαίνονται με το σέρφινγκ (δεν τους αδικώ). Εγώ τρελαίνομαι με το διάβασμα!

very nice work, mate..keep practicing, that's the only way to get accustomed to the language and its idioms....just in case you didn't catch some of the things that souvlatzis said and you may find them useful:
πώς πάτε = how are you doing, how is it going
νά'σαι καλά = bless your heart (at that context)
Γειά σου ρε (your name) = it is used not only as a greeting, but in that context he express support towards you in likes of "you go, boy!"..it can also be used when someone is in agreement with an opinion of yours (Ά Γεια σου!)
one small correction: when you mentioned you would be going to Greece you said "Πηγαίνουμε", grammatically correct would be "Θα πάμε στην Ελλάδα".
a couple of tips....souvlaki bar in greek it's called "σουβλατζίδικο" , yeah i know it sounds difficult but you'll get used to it if you really like souvlaki... :D
and another one, normally when you order a dish at a σουβλατζίδικο or ταβέρνα we don't use the word "πιατο"...not that is incorrect but it's more common to use the word "μερίδα" (a portion)..for example "Θέλω μία μερίδα πατάτες και δύο μερίδες γύρο"..that's all, hope you have a good time here in Greece..
