Arledge is on point! I'm going to be totally honest with you guys. This is how I felt before Lincoln Riley went to USC.. I felt like Caleb Williams was probably the most talented quarterback that Lincoln Riley ever had and I was excited about what he did during his freshman season. I never wanted Lincoln Riley gone... But I definitely wanted him to fire Alex Grinch. He has had 3 different DCs Mike Stoops ruffin McNeil and Alex Grinch.... Eventually he will find the right one right? That's what I hoped for.. B4 he left. Lincoln Riley would be frightening if he ever got a defense. Good luck USC fans. I really hope he doesn't waste Caleb Williams last year.. like he did Jalen hurts Kyler Murray and Baker Mayfield. It sucks to have all of those great QBs and not one playoff victory to show for it. But he is amazing at winning Heisman trophies

    • @edr4973
      @edr4973 Год назад +1

This is all too familiar to Sooner fans. Making every other offense look elite when your offense should blow them out. Never being able to put a team away. Second half collapses that lead to at least one regular season loss you shouldn't have and getting beat in big games.
Riley is a gifted offensive mind. But his reluctance to hire a proven defensive coach is mind boggling.

He has 110 million guaranteed as long as he doesn’t commit adultery or fail a tox screen. Usc can’t afford to fire him for years , at least 3-5 more. Thank you Chris! Agree wholeheartedly my friend. Thanks for being our collective voice. Let's NOT waste Caleb's upcoming final year. Who knows how many chances we'll get in the near future. After all, USC has never been in the CFP, and we were last in the BCS title game in 2006. We came close in 2008. It's now 2023. The O (especially Caleb), the University, and the fans deserve better. And we're losing out on stellar D recruits. Hopefully that means more to Coach Riley than his loyalty to Mr. Grinch. For most of the season, I used to think that we should give Mr. Grinch another chance, just because it's his first year here. But, with a whole month to prepare against a lesser team (as my friend from New Orleans told me, Tulane is "not known as a football powerhouse") and not improving during the second half of the season but actually getting worse, it's truly a travesty. It's a lack of discipline and execution on D plus a lack of leadership from the DC. The lack of D was not just "embarrassing" and "terrible" but in my humble opinion, the most apt word for it is 'sickening.'

Unfortunately, I see more of the same if he stays. We need a guy who can not only recruit the big guys on defense (Brian Cushing, Ray Maualuga, Clay Mathews, Lofa Tatupa et. al.) but help coach them. Can anyone say Ed Orgeron???? I realize the wokesters at USC will have a fit, but the guy wouldn't be running the team, just coaching/recruiting the defense!

This was a Musings Segment at a strange time in today’s climate of USC football. USC went from 4 and 8 all the way up to an 11 and 3 season. This was a stellar, absolutely remarkable turnaround. If anyone had asked the collective of all USC fans if that season be an acceptable result, all of us would have replied with a resounding “YES!”. I have never seen anything like this historic about face in all of my years as a Trojan.
We are all human beings. We see the possibilities and sometimes feel emotional, a little too close to them. This time we ended up in a finish that included three painful losses. Those losses were hard to accept. I’m not suggesting that the sky is falling, but yes, I do think that something needs to change if our team is to make it to the highest level.
Chris accurately built all of this up to a simple question, one which I think is appropriate. This isn’t word for word, but I think it’s close enough. Coach Riley, you are willing to switch out players. Are you willing also to switch out your own coaching staff as well?
I will reply also in my own words:
“Coach Riley, thank you for what you and your coaching team was able to do with the roster that you inherited. It is amazing how you were able to deliver eleven wins to the Trojan Nation this year-an incredible turn-around after the four wins that we experienced last year.
As Chris Arledge noted, you said you would make changes in the roster of players that you inherited. I appreciate the results, which were astonishing. At this point we have one, perhaps two years left with possibly the greatest college football quarterback to ever pick up a football in Caleb Williams.
Please, let’s not waste that time by doing nothing with changes in the coaching staff on the defensive side. The kids need to learn how to tackle at least, and this hasn’t happened.
Coach, you told us all on day one that your goal is to make USC Football elite again, and win Championships. With this said, are you willing to make changes in your staff in order to make USC Football elite once again, and win the national championship? All of Trojan Nation is behind your goal, and hoping that you will be able to attain it.”
That’s my voice. I hope others will also add theirs as well. In finishing, and as always…FIGHT ON!

I want Mike Bohn to be our savior, again, in this situation. He has eyes, he sees what's happening. He should DEMAND that Riley fire Grinch while he and Riley pursue Jim Leonhard. The move to the Big 10 means the stakes are high and we can't afford to have such a woeful defense in that conference. And Arledge is right...where is the track record of Grinch to justify keeping him on? Leonhard is a proven commodity who just so happens to be the best DC in the Big 10.
I'm not a Grinch hater but he clearly is not at that level to take USC to championships. But I will say this...if Riley doesn't get rid of him, I'm going to question Riley's commitment at $10 mil/year to put the best USC team on the field that he can.
Excuse time is over. The partnership with Grinch is not working. Cut the line..and go land the big fish!

Arledge; back in August I posed a question to the panel asking: "Was DB Coach Dante Williams a good position coach or just a top notch recruiter?" You andwered it by saying "We'll know by October" I agreed with you and now that the season is fading into the rearview mirror; we are still faced with the question I posed.
My take is he's a top recruiter and a TERRIBLE position coach! The DB's were horrible last year. Largely because they just weren't any good. But this year we were told we had the makings of a Championship caliber backend. Yes, the Safties were DC Grinch's and the Corners were Donte's. Neither group did much to instill fear in opposing QB's/OC's...
Yes, the defense forced a ton of turnovers. But in large part the bulk of them came against the lowest capable teams we played. Or in moments of absolute need & desperation.
I wasn't real excited when it was announced that Grinch was CLR's choice to be DC. At the time I was good with the retention of Donte out of Any from the previous staff. But now I'm no longer of that mind. Yes, Grinch needs to be gone yesterday. Donte needs to clear out his office too.

I went to a practice in Pete's first year and you could tell Uperesa wasn't Pete's cup of tea. "Get your guys lined up Keith" barked Pete. Year 2 it was Tim "God Wants Three Yards" Davis. He brought physicality to the offense. That is what Lincoln has to do with the defense. It's starts with Grinch but I think several position coaches need to go, including Donte Williams. We'll see if Lincoln has the stones to make tough decisions. His level of success depends upon it.

    1. Coach grinch (AG) record of almost ten years shows no indication of excellence. 2. Defense got worse this year, culminating in arguably the worst usc defensive performance in half a century. 3. His recruiting has not been special. He needs to be replaced. Don’t tell me usc can’t hire someone with successful record . And no Chris Riley has only shown he’s a better offensive coordinator than Hackett or Helton. He has failed in 1/2 of his job, recruiting elite defensive staff, players etc.

Everybody and their brother associated with USC was told this was coming and you USC fans laughed at us OU fans. Give Riley a minute to do what exactly? His 1-4 record in postseason bowl games has been a direct result of so-so to bad defenses. How would that change by retaining Grinch, who hasn't shown any track record to field a defense required for championships?

Combine this with the fact that USC's defensive recruiting has been horrible and it is clear Alex Grinch must go. But Arledge is missing a part of the problem here. The issues at USC run even higher than Riley. The core problem is a horrible AD - Mike Bohn. Bohn got extremely lucky when he hired Luke Fickell at Cincinnati, but notice that Luke Fickell did not want to come to USC and work under Bohn again. That says something. Fickell has moved to Wisconsin (really?) instead of USC. USC stands nearly alone as a football blue-blood program that has stopped all outside collectives. This puts USC at a massive disadvantage in going after the top recruits. Alumni of USC tried to form a collective (Student Body Right) and Bohn threatened them to the point they gave up. Furthermore, Bohn's athletic department has done a terrible job of re-igniting fan excitement about the team. His athletic department failed to sell out even the Notre Dame game, despite the fact that USC was clearly in the running for a CFP bid, with a potential Heisman winner. Just incredible failure by Mike Bohn and the whole athletic department.
Many people give Bohn alot of credit for hiring Riley, but truthfully, this was a hire that was a no-brainer that any college football fan could make. It required only one thing - a big checkbook. A really good AD would have paid more attention to Riley's track record and maybe insisted that he hire a better defensive coordinator and head of recruiting, along with other key coaching staff. The partnership between a good AD and his coaches can bring fabulous results. That is yet to be seen at USC.

I thoroughly enjoyed your in-depth analysis of the game.
As a Tulane alumnus ( 1974 ), along with my wife ( 1973 ), and my son ( 1998 ), I found your woeful hand wringing regarding the loss to Tulane to be flawless.
    Suck it up. You lost.
Tulane was the better team in the 2023 Cotton Bowl, the most important game of the year for both teams. SC failed to prevail.
You failed to mention that Tulane's last drive was brilliant, and unrelenting given the fact that they converted on two fourth downs, had one pass blocked, and the QB was sacked twice.
The best play was by Tulane's Patrick Jenkins, number "0", demolishing the SC running back in the endzone for a safety. Jenkins planted the SC runner on his back like being hit by a garbage truck. Beautiful.
I look forward to more of your your pathetic excuses. Keep writing.

I told my “fellow” SC fans this the whole season. I use the word “fellow” cuz most of u are a bunch of casuals who cant handle criticism and would get all butthurt and deflect it by calling me an Oklahoma fan.
But the funniest part of this all was after the Oregon St game, u casuals were praising Grinch and saying he deserved a head coaching job 🤣🤣🤣😂.
The writing was on the wall ALL SEASON LONG. The bend but dont break defense was like a volcano waiting to explode. This was the plain truth and nobody wanted to hear it or acknowledge it, not the fans and especially not the local media.
All this its Yr 1, and we were 4-8, and i kept saying we were gonna waste Caleb’s generational talent ( i have the receipts from months ago to prove it on the comment section of this channel, Inside Troy, Locked On and The Voice of College Football) and now the media wants to copy my takes lol.
The point is, the good football teams and especially the great ones, GET BETTER AS THE YR GOES ON. Pete Carroll’s teams were playjng their best ball in November.
BUT WE DIDNT DO THAT. We didnt improve, our tackling got worse, our protection got worse, we couldnt stop the run, we continued to give up explosive plays and squandering leads. And the play calling got worse.
And worst of all, our recruiting got worse.
This is not what 110 million is supposed to buy you !! 110 million comes along with expectations. It comes along with pac -12 championships, CFP births and natties. It comes with winning the recruiting battles, building a fence around SoCal, having the best NIL package and facilities college football can offer.
WE HAVE NONE OF THESE THINGS. I dont want to go thru anymore bullshit suffering. WE DESERVE TO WIN. We deserve to be back as a blue blood program. We cannot accept mediocrity any further. Cuz we havent been fighting on, we’ve been slowly dying. And it needs to stop NOW

I ain't gonna lie, the Trojans have a lotta work to do with regard to defense & player development within a given dc's system... but I have yet to see a bowl game decided on an epic goal line stand or pick six to flip the outcome... so, considering that not even the final four in the CFP brought it on that side of the ball, it's hard to blame the defense on this game. Where the game, in fact did turn, was the decision to run out the clock that led to the safety & subsequent TD, plain & simple... and it's not the first time this strategy has backfired during the course of the season against AZ,Cal, Colorado, AZ St. & the first game vs. Utah. No surprise here, it didn't work yet again.
