The thing I love about this movie is how the stakes are so low, just learning to speak without stuttering, and yet so high because of who he is & what's going on in the world. It definitely deserved those Academy Awards & all the other awards it got that year.

I remember going to the cinema with my girlfriend at the time pretty clueless on what this was about. And I, being a stutterer myself, came out absolutely loving this movie. A stellar cast, too. Therefore I am so glad whenever I see people reacting to this because well, it does show how difficult it can be for us stutterer at times. Now my stutter isn't as bad as it was when I was younger but I still catch myself doing it sometimes.

The speech at the end gives me chills every time. Mainly because Colin Firth sounds so identical to the king and also the meaning behind that speech is so chilling.

At the end when you were happy they remained friends.... I remember a story when this came out, the producers (directors, writer et al) were doing research, and chatted with one of Lionel's sons, to get insight to him, how to portray him. He dug out correspondence his dad received from King Edward. The letters really showed the depth and longevity of their friendship. It was such a treasure trove that helped them craft their partnership on screen. Heard Queen Elizabeth appreciated this movie, as she felt they captured the loving and wonderful person her father was. Movie deserved its Oscar wins.

This film took many years to get made. David Seidler who wrote this movie started work on it back in the 1980's but Seidler wanted to get the blessing of The Queen Mother (played by Helena Bonham Carter) before making the movie.
The Queen Mother gave her blessing but asked if this movie could only be made after her death as there were a lot of painful memories she didn't want to relive to which Seidler agreed.
Of course what nobody knew at the time was that the Queen Mother would live to the age of 102 finally passing in 2002.
Sadly David Seidler passed away just a few days ago.

He was the unexpected king. Became king because his brother abdicated. He was king at a time when Britain was in trouble. During World War II he stayed with his people during the bad times, he could have moved to Canada, Australia or South Africa (all parts of the Empire) but didn’t. His speeches during the war gave Britain (and the Empire) hope, speeches that took a lot out of him for reasons we see in this film. With loads of respect to Elizabeth II his daughter, King George VI was the British monarch of the 20th Century, in my humble opinion.

Every character feels like a real person with real personal goals and fears. And of course at the center is the wonderful subtext of two men's friendship.

*_THANK YOU_* for watching this one!!!
I have been trying for ages to persuade ANY reactor to give this one a try. I continue to be amazed that hardly anyone has done it.
-on the first visit when Bertie says he “doesn’t care”, he doesn’t mean he doesn’t care about having a speech impediment; what he means that he doesn’t care _WHY_ he stammers, or what the cause is, he just wants it fixed. (He is not getting that root causes need to be addressed in order to make any change)
Interestingly- he never actually came across to me as “aggressive” or violent, per se. His outbursts of temper showed real anger and extreme frustration; they were loud and perhaps startlingly abrupt; but they never felt _threatening_ to me- they raised no fears in my mind that he might haul off and hurt someone. It read (to me) mzuch more as _defensiveness_, than _unkindness._
Even Lionel seems to recognize this: on first encountering these explosions, he doesn’t even flinch, but calmly notes, “You’ve got a bit of a temper”, as if discussing the weather. Later on he explains to his wife that one of his clients is fighting him- why?- _”he’s afraid of his own shadow”._

18:54 the isolation Bertie faced growing up, that he admits to not even having a close friend outside of David, reminds me of a story about Bertie’s older daughter Elizabeth (who would herself become queen in 1952)-she was playing in her garden one day with her sister Margaret, with a city street on the other side of the hedge. She heard the non-royal children playing and laughing as they ran around. There was one girl who rode a bicycle along the outside of the hedge every day. At one point, Elizabeth stood up, and with a determined look in her eye, said to Margaret, “One day, I SHALL own a bicycle!”

The Queen mother (Bertie’s wife and the late Queen Elizabeth’s mother) was such a rock for both Bertie and the family. Bertie lost his temper but he never had it with his immediate family, before taking the thrown their lives were in bliss not having to be aware of potentially taking the thrown. This in the end shaped Bertie, in my opinion, to become one of the greatest kings, he kept the moral of the British to continue when hell was at their doorstep, all while rebuilding himself up after certain family members broke him down. Sadly this stress contributed to him dying so early in life that put the late Elizabeth on the thrown at an early age.
Think that Bertie’s tribulations helped raised a very stoic Queen, and the Queen mother was their best asset in both support and defender of her family.

Glad that you have reacted to this fine movie! Colin Firth, the actor playing Bertie in The King's Speech, played Mr. Darcy in the fabulous 1996 BBC mini-series adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice". I enjoyed your reaction to the more recent movie adaptation of Jane Austen's novel, and I hope at some time in the future, whether for a reaction or for your own pleasure, you will take the time to see the 1996 mini-series adaptation. With a longer running time, the plot and characters become more nuanced.
Btw, at the end of the movie, when Bertie asks his two little daughters about his speech, the first one, Elizabeth, who comments, was the future Queen Elizabeth II of the UK and Commonwealth. One of the greatest monarchs in British history, and the longest reigning of all of them, she died a year and a half ago.

12:31 ...People might laugh at this, but those are real techniques; I use those and they are quite helpful, partially because they help with your speech, but mostly because it helps you to lose your feeling of ridicule (and if you go to a stage in front of an audience, you don't want that feeling with you, so these tricks are priceless)

Colin Firth gave his first war speech as King George, accompanied by the most German music, the second act of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. What a great choice.

King George VI was abused by his nanny during his childhood, including being beaten and starved. He was criticised and ignored by his father, something which affected his self-confidence for the rest of his life.

Reminds me of Kaiser Wilhelm II, who was tortured as a child in many failed attempts to heal his crippled left arm. By the way, Wilhelm was half English because of his mother Vicky, the daughter of Queen Victoria.

I really love that Bertie did not become excellent. He managed to get through the speech, not nailed it. Way more believable this way.
    Captain Barbossa was terrific.

Wasn't that great? My favorite scene has to be when Myrtle comes home to find the King and Queen in her home. The subtle subtext throughout that scene is so great. When Myrtle, still starstruck, asks "Will your Majesties be staying for dinner?" she worries about the task ahead of her, trying to put on her families best for them. The Queen picks up on this and graciously gives her an out. So good.

There are a couple of great movies or tv series out there about that royal family. Of course the Crown just wrapped up. The first season covers David's abdication and the effect it had on Elizabeth (little Lilibeth here) and her father. There is a terrific television movie called 'Bertie and Elizabeth' about George VI and his wife the queen mother during the war years. I highly recommend it. It also covers their romance before the war.

A few inaccuracies in the movie:
Bertie started working with Lionel only a couple of years after the speech in Wembley stadium - 1927.
The evil nanny actually hated David as much as she did Bertie.
Churchill was not concerned that David wasn't a good king. He was a big fan of David's and continued to defend him even after he abdicated.
Lionel's methods actually are unknown. He played it very close to the chest. He didn't leave any records behind. Some of what he did can be inferred from remarks he made about speech therapy. Lionel's descendants say it was very unlikely that he called King George VI Bertie.
David says "Herr Hitler will sort them out," and later Churchill says there are doubts as to whose side David will be on in the event of war with Germany. David was naïve, and didn't really care, when it came to Germany and to fascism. (There was a faction in the United States that was pro-Germany. Its most famous spokesman was aviator Charles Lindbergh. He went to Germany in the mid-'30s and received a decoration and an honorary commission from Hermann Göring, commander of the Luftwaffe. Although Lindy renounced his stand and his decoration when the U.S. entered the war, President Roosevelt didn't trust him and wouldn't let him train pilots.)
von Ribbentrop sent 17 carnations to Wallis because he and Wallis had spent 17 nights together.
David and Wallis had a weird, sleazy life together after he abdicated. They cheated on each other many times and were generally unlikable, and unpopular wherever they went. They also were neither of them very bright.

I like the story of King Goerge VI. Even those w/privilege can hv obstacles & challenges to overcome. He stepped up in a time when his nation needed him most. If I rmbr this part of WW2 history, during the Blitz, the King was pressured to evacuate his family from London, but he refused. He thought it was important to stay w/his people. He & Churchill ended up making a strange duo, but quite a team during the war. Talk abt Leadership! Strange take on this movie, I know.

RE: "The King's No" as Concept and Theme; Funny thing, when you explained you expected it to be something to do with Royalty saying No that there are at least two major ways in which the King's No got passed down to democratic republics and parliaments. For starters, Royal Assent is required meaning the Default assumption is No, and Yes is needed to proceed. And secondly, this was called a Veto since classical Roman times and still is in many governments. Various public offices will have a Veto, including Presidents, Prime Ministers, Senates, and Supreme Courts.

In the early 1940’s, when the Wehrmacht (German Air Force) was dropping bombs on London, many children were evacuated to the countryside to keep them safe. However, the royal children were not. When the press asked the Queen why she was taking such an awful risk, she answered that she would actually have preferred to send them away. “But the children won’t go unless I go. And I won’t go unless the King goes. And the King won’t go under any circumstances whatsoever.”
After every bombing raid, the King would take the Queen and the Princesses and go to the site of the bombing, to give a speech to the people there, and urge them to keep their spirits up. The people were thrilled to see their King showing such an interest in their tragedy. The bombings were mainly clustered in the working class East End of London. At one point the Palace was hit with bombs. No member of the royal family was injured, but the Queen said “At last I can look the East End in the face.”

I'm not much into historical movies, and if it weren't for a friend of mine who invited me in the theater, I wouldn't have seen this one. And I would have definitely missed something.
Also, I can't see it without thinking back about an English teacher, in high school, who made us a kinda funny test for April's fool's day, as one of the questions was "Name 5 kings named George". And though most of us (me included) just answered religiously "George I, George II, [...] George V", one of our classmate answered "George Harrison, George Michael, Boy George and George of the Jungle" (I can't recall the last one she named though).

6:09 as someone who stutter, I confirm it is harder to speak to someone I do not know.
7:30 wrong. Social anxiety is the not the cause of a stutter. However, a stutter may cause a social anxiety. I am not current on the researches, but I know there is a genetic component. People who stutter tend to have someone else in the family who also stutters.
8:50 yep, "Get it out" and "take your time". For me it sounds like "take your time but do it quickly." Trust me, it is not the kind of comments that helps someone who stutters.
10:05 I did not of that in speech therapy.
    13:37 call him Lionel.
