'Chalk Stream Chronicles' 'adventures with a fly rod'

  • Over twenty years ago Simon J Ward became fascinated by the life and times of George Selwyn Marryat. The Nineteenth Century flyfishing guru to Frederick Michael Halford. In the eyes of this filmaker GSM can only be seen as the 'Father of the Dry Fly' on the chalk streams of Southern England. This documentary is the culmination of over twenty years of research into GSM's life and times.
The script for the origins & evolution of the 'just what is a chalk stream' has been adapted by Simon J Ward from 'chapter one' of the manuscript written by Roy Darlington (with his kind permission) in the early 1990s for the 'Test & Itchen Association.'

A very nice tribute to fly fishing's historical past. Something, that unfortunately, is being tossed aside by our youthful anglers. The filming was quite well done. Thank you.

It is wonderfully generous of you to share this with the world. I'm just a few minutes in and am enjoying it immensely. I hope, as it progresses, that whilst the dry fly might have been brought up on the chalkstreams its true inception on the Derbyshire Wye should be acknowledged and James Ogden recognised as its father. Top stuff though chaps :-)

Watching this video from locked down regional Victoria in Australia, a day after our own trout streams reopened to angling, this has to be the best video on the chalk streams I've seen yet, absolutely brilliant work. And the thoroughness of your historical investigation is to be congratulated, the results being your own reward. A most enjoyable viewing, so pleased you went to such trouble to bring this to our screens. Thank you.

Deep appreciation for the history and the description of chalk streams. And for the excellent film. It was as informative and educational as it was entertaining. Great insight into nymphing in clear water; wow, those tiny nymphs snaring large trout!
If you can share any insight for those of us from the States who yearn to visit and fish your chalk streams that would be much appreciated as well. Again, excellent!!

What a truly delightful and evocative film - thank you.
Trout fishing of this quality in the U.K. on chalk streams is an expensive sport these days and has been for many years. It’s rather like pheasant and partridge shooting - the sports have become big business syndicates frequented by rich city boys - with all the gear and no idea.
Happily I can fish for trout in western Canada and the US for a fraction of the cost of waiting for a rod on hammered rivers in Britain.
Thanks again for a wonderful film.
Best wishes from an expat in Canada. 🇬🇧🇨🇦

Sadly this is often true now - oiks with little understanding or knowledge who only want the 'kudos' of bringing out some flabby stocked fish - often a Rainbow - which has no place in a chalk stream and was probably caught on a lure when their inability with finer forms have failed them. There remains a 'small tight knit circle of like minded gentlemen' (and gentlewomen) who refuse this tardy state of affairs and work towards creating a sustainable environment in the chalk streams which eschews quantity for quality and are reducing any stocking of artificial fish, with many beautiful stretches of river with equally beautiful wild fish and no stocked fish at all. These fish rarely reach the weight of the slabs the oiks expect for their cash - but the quality!!! Seek them out - you do to have to be rich in money 'merely' in spirit.

Dear Mr. Ward, Thank you for such a pure breath of chalkstream air during this arid time. I always thought G. Marryat must be a great man having read Halfords acknowledgement in the preface of 'Floating Flies.' Now, thanks to you I know he is. Fascinating to see the actual flies he tied which speak volumes. Moving to see you with wreath at his headstone. What a Bonnet, what a Man. Many thanks. J. A.

Here is a fascinating insight into the contribution made by George Selwyn Marryat into the development of fishing with a dry fly on England's chalk streams. Simon
J Ward's film opens with a detailed description of the geomorphology
of chalk streams and concludes with a red letter day fishing with
    subsurface nymphs.
As a fly fishing guide and instructor I found
this film particularly useful because, from time to time, we get
clients who are preparing for a day's fishing on a chalk stream. This
video highlights the differences between the challenges of fishing for
visible trout on chalk streams and those faced by anglers on the
moorland rivers of south west England.

Quite good, and nice idea, but disappointing. It could have done with some professional editing and would have been better at half it's length; sometimes less is more. The irritating presence of the copyright notice was unnecessary given the credits at the end, and the availability of ownership information written into the digital metadata. Ironic that the 'prince of fishers' and driving force behind the 'floating fly' should be invoked with almost a third of the film showing trout caught on a nymph. An at times, patronising commentary, with even an admission of a "perfect cast and presentation". Repetitive use of the same photos, dreadful fading-in of titles at the beginning, and over-use of (ridiculous) ghostly figures signifies a well-meaning but very amateur effort. G.S. Marryat was indeed a master, and Halford's tutor, but this well intentioned effort needed some professional input to truly honour one who was fly fishing's driver.
