Hiking Slough Creek and my Assessment of the Yellowstone Park Ranger

- This is a June 10, 2020 hike from the Slough Creek trailhead to the park boundary at the Silvertip ranch and back. It is 22 miles round trip and this time of year the temperature is cool, lots of animals to see, and if you like wildflowers and birds there are a lot of them to see also. I also talk a little bit about my impressions of Park Rangers. I hear both good and bad stories from people but this is my personal thoughts. This is only about Park Rangers and not the other staff that you see like, for example, the park staff at bear jams.

The world is a much more peaceful place when we hike with Stan ;)
22 miles that’s a long hike, specially filming and carrying all the equipment. Always enjoy your videos
The park is beautifully green, creeks running full, there is no place like Yellowstone! Thanks so much for sharing.
you probably dont care but does someone know of a way to get back into an instagram account..?
I stupidly lost the account password. I would appreciate any tricks you can give me
@Zion Chad Instablaster ;)
@Hayes Dayton thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process atm.
Takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
@Hayes Dayton It did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thank you so much you really help me out :D
@Zion Chad you are welcome :D
Wonderful hike Stan, and thanks for taking us along. Your impressions of the Park Rangers are the same as mine regarding their professionalism and knowledge and interactions.
Thank you specially info on park rangers. Birds are a very important indicator of any parks health. They tell the story of climate beyond the park. The history info I didn’t expect but it makes total sense! Thank you!
Again thank you Stan for beautiful video. It is so green and bright colors this time of year.
You let us see nature that many of us would never enjoy, and you do it in a way that makes it feel like we are there, watching the noble animals in nature's beauty. Thanks so much for this. When our worlds become chaotic, it's nice to know you are there, inviting us to join you in that peaceful wonder.
Stan, thanks for taking me along on another beautiful hike. Always enjoy Yellowstone, my favorite park. Also, enjoyed hearing your comments about the Park Rangers. What a terrific bunch of people.
Thanks Stan. I have had the good fortune to experience several trips up the Slough Creek drainage, once during a multi-day backpacking adventure during the summer and once skiing it in the dead of winter. Both were excellent trips. Your video brought back many good memories of the wonderful sights and sounds YNP has to offer, especially if one takes the time and makes the effort to explore the trails. Thanks again for sharing your adventures.
You are a master!! Thanks for sharing as it carries me back to what little time we spent in the park and makes us anxious to return.
That was excellent and I appreciate that you recognize your channel as being 'Educational' and not merely entertainment. I learn something from all of your videos. You have a great library. Thanks for sharing!
Wonderful as always! My grandson was 5 when we were there and he did the Junior Ranger program. So cute. At the end he had to get his badge from a ranger. I thought it would be a badge and a picture but he sat down and went over every page in the booklet with him. I was so impressed that he took his time. We have reservations to be there in mid September. Can’t wait.
Another fantastic video Stan...my favorite area of the park...hoping to get there again next month. Thanks for bringing us along, and keep up the great work!
Wonderful! Great hike with lots of wildlife and info.! So nice to get out there with you! Thank you!
Really nice video. Loved the bears glad to see them enjoying the morning . Looked like the one mama detected you.babies and mother look really healthy. Nice scenery and sunrise. Great job ! Thank you Stan.
I once climbed to the top of that butte at the beginning of the first meadow while my brother fly fished below in the creek. The view was simply incredible from up there.
An enlightening adventure-filled YNP wilderness video! Excellent highcountry
& wildlife photography with commentary. A marvelously beautiful trail hike! Thx!
Gorgeous footage, informational and very entertaining! Thank you for sharing your explorations and your knowledge of the area. Those Rangers are phenomenal! I really like your approach to your videos! Thank you!
Stan is the Hiking Man. Thanks for sharing all those miles with us and for ideas on possible hikes in Yellowstone!
Another premium video from Stan. Loved what you shared on the Rangers. Good stuff ! Stay safe.
Another beautiful peaceful walk.......thank you Stan!
My family and I visited the Slough Creek campsite in July 2019. We didn't have the opportunity to hike the trail. It's beautiful! Thanks for sharing.
Stan, thank you for loving wildlife and the spaces they call home. You are so respectful.
Love your videos. Nice hiking with you! You got me feeling envious of those Rangers lol! Thanks again
I enjoyed your video immensely and hope some day hike the same trail....thank you for sharing your experiences in this beautiful hike...you are truly blessed.
Wonderful video.
Thanks for sharing a terrific hike and beautiful country.
THANK YOU sharing this fantastic document .
Great vid Stan! Very informative and great cinematography!
Beautiful scenery! Thanks for sharing!
Magnificent! And total respect for park rangers! 😉🇨🇦
🤔 Stan Amazing Shots
Another Great One 🇺🇲✌🏻
Wow!! Thank you for sharing this video!! Amazing hike!
Cant believe all the wildlife, and the fact that you needed to keep moving! Thank you
Slough Creek was my very first adventure in Yellowstone. I think God created this place with the idea that anyone seeing the stars here, would understand...
Love this post.
Dear Stan,
Yellowstone np is defintely wonderland! Thanks for this new video and the way you’re showing us the wonders of this park. I’ve been several times in the area and I planed to come back in September this year but who knows with the pandemic if it will be possible? Anyway, a BIG thanks again and please, keep going! Greetings from Switzerland! 🇺🇸🇨🇭Take care!
I was wondering if you have ever made it back to Yellowstone? I would love to visit Switzerland. Thanks for your comments.
Fabulous video Stan!!!
Beautiful hike! Thanks for sharing.
Excellent video! We were in Yellowstone a few days back and I am so ready to go back.
Honestly I just found your videos today. I can't stop watching them. Its so amazing to me how beautiful our world is. I've loved bears for a while now but I know I can never see one in the wild so I watch other people's videos. And your is just great. I'm trying to figure out how often you go on these hikes. Please keep these amazing videos coming. Thank you so much and God bless
I try to do a Yellowstone hike once a week in the summer. Thanks for your comments.
Nicely done video. The wildlife in that park is astounding.
You put on a lot of miles there. Just spectacular.🙏🏼
Just found your videos and I thank you for your wonderful love for God's great creations. Endless!
Thank YOU! IN 30 yrs I tried Twice to head north on that trail...1973 and 2010. First time I got scared about bears. Then in 2010 there was a sign by slough creek campground,,no overnite..Bear danger... I wish I could go w YOU sometime...My fav place on this planet. I was raised in NE Ohio and fell in love with the Park my first visit Sep 1973...I' m 66 now and just Have to get back..Now living in AZ. Thank you
You are about the same age as me. I will turn 70 in a couple months. I will be doing this hike again this year in early June to spot bears. Where in Arizona do you live. I lived in Tucson and Prescott 1954-1962.
Thank you for showing baby bear !
Stan, I love your video's. You bring the best of USA and nature to us all. Regards from Mother Country. Dorset UK
Thank you Philip. Nice to hear from somebody from another country.
Great videos, thank you for sharing
Very beautiful that place and an excellent video, I congratulate you and thank you very much for sharing it. I hope you have a great day. Regards.
wonderful video, thank you for sharing it.
Stan wins the internet. Almost always.
Thank you Stan! Wish I was there.
Thanks for sticking up for our Park Rangers.
In 40 yrs of hiking and climbing on Rainier, North Cascades and especially the Olympics I've had maybe one ranger that was an ass.
Otherwise in hundreds of encounters I have always enjoyed their conversation, advice and professionalism.
I make sure to shake their hands and thank them for their service to our nation.
Most are part-time/seasonal as elected conservatives haven't really wanted to fund our Parks since Reagan and Watt.
Its why there are billions in work waiting to be done in the system.
It's not political to point out historical facts.
You do comment that this an educational site.
Happy Trails.
Beautiful, Stan! I'm hoping to be there in a couple weeks. Thanks for taking us along with you, since I'm way too scared and a city slicker to ever attempt this on my own.
Thank you for this video of your hike. You are brave to walk there by yourself!
Steven Brown much safer than most big cities
@@spicyroads very true ive always felt & at home safer in a forest alone even a few animals birds walk up to you to say hi specail moments alone✌
I talked with a woman park ranger in Mammoth last year and she was everything you described. I have read Jerry Mernin's book and the rangers do a lot. Body recovery from different situations (canyon or bear attacks), rescue, and bear trapping as the visitors sleep. Mernin was very fond of his horses and mules.
Love your videos very enjoyable
You live a good life, Stan.
Just started watching your videos today. Your videos are very calm even the ones where you run into bears lol
That is the idea; to show how beautiful and peaceful it is in God’s beautiful creation. Thanks for your comments.
Ur videos are amazing thank you
👍👍 Thank you and God bless ✌️
I have been watching many of your videos while "sheltering in place". I enjoy them all, since Yellowstone National Park is about my favorite place on this ole planet earth. It is a treat to see what is off the beaten path, and thank you for letting nature be your soundtrack. So many travel videos use very subjectively chosen music, which can be annoying. The map you show is a nice addition.
I will be returning to YNP in September, all things being equal. I made the first visit nearly 70 years ago, when bears were fed garbage behind the hotels, with bleachers set up, no less! My dad worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad (R.I.P. NP in 1969; merger with Great Northern an Burlington railroads) and sometimes he escorted tours for train passengers disembarking in Livingston for a tour of the park.
Just a suggestion: I think most viewers can identify the larger mammals, but it would be nice to have identification given for the birds and waterfowl you include.
Thank you again for sharing your adventures. You are an example and inspiration for responsible backcountry use.
Cindy, that is very interesting to hear about your experiences in the park. Thank you for your comments. I hope you make it back in September.
The reason I don't identify the birds is because I don't know that much about all the different kinds of birds. But I really like seeing them just like I like seeing all the wildlife. I did make an attempt to identify a lot of birds on a video call "Bird Watching on Slough Creek".
@@StanMills Thank you so much for recommending your "Bird Watching on Slough Creek" video. It is very informative and interesting, and certainly a help for my next visit. Your videography is very professional and well edited. Thank you again for sharing your talent and knowledge.
Haven't ever gone to the boundary just to the ranger cabin which is 16 miles round trip. Love this northern area of yellow stone and staying in Cooke city
Stan, me & my wife did part of this hike on Monday June 15th, We watched a wolf in lamar valley and a grizzly sow with 2 cubs on a mountain behind Lamar River trailhead so by the time we got to Slough it was almost noon. I wanted to make to Elk Tongue Patrol cabin but we started too late. We ended up stopping at 2S2, I made lunch in the jetboil, took my shoes & socks off and soaked my feet in the chilly creek. I had to settle for my binoculars. I lugged my spotting scope two days prior on a short Yellowstone River Picnic Area, I knew it would be too much for Slough creek. We didn't see any bears on the hike, dozen or so large Bison, 3 Marmots, Grouse, red fox and a badger on the trail. (good news is the last 3 days in the park we saw 18 black bears but no cubs-- saw a cinnamon, brown and black in the meadow across from Pebble Creek CG. The black eventually ran west towards trout lake area.) Some day we hope to make it to SilverTip and back. Keep up the great videos!
John, nice to hear you had a great Yellowstone trip. Thank you for your comments.
Good video. Always a pleasure to watch. Will be at 2s4 for 3 days this weekend. Hopefully the fish and wild life will cooperate and show them selves
Did you do your trip and did you make a video?
@@StanMills Yes we did. Saw three grizzlies and alot of buffalo. It rained on us and the creek was still pretty high. We came out a day early because I was having a nasty back issue. That was the second trip into slough creek. We want to go again but they changed to system for getting a permit so I dont know what kind of luck we will have. I grew up around yellowstone and teton parks and love that area.
NO video. Just photos
Certainly magnificent nature.
We did this hike two days after you! Only made it 4 miles in, though. And didn’t see any bears. 😢
Great video
Dang I stayed in that cabin that night with those two researchers from MSU. I was counting birds in the fields south of the cabin off trail and you must have passed by then
incredible nature
Thank you Stan
I just stumbled upon, and subscribed to your channel. Your narration is great and you give me courage to seek out more bears in my future adventures!! Im from South Dakota and despite our beautiful Black Hills, I must admit that the rockies are my favorite!! If you ever invite viewers on adventures, I hope i make the list!! Thanks Stan!! #BohemianBackpackers
Stan, I’m living in Yellowstone for the next few months and I’m looking for advice on where to overnight backpack. I’m in the Mammoth Hot Springs area. Would you consider allowing me to tag along on a trip with you? I have the gear, just looking for someone who knows the area. I was going to Sportsman’s Lake, but that’s under grizzly management and solo hiking is discouraged. Your channel is a big inspiration for me, also trying to post some videos of my own. Let me know if you wouldn’t mind the company! Cheers!
I just joint you on your Chanel youtube.....i néed to ses more and more and more nature 🤗
Excellent video
Awesome!
Beautiful place. Most people never see the back roads.
great video
Did this late Sept 2020. Took me a while to recognize some of it because, when we went, the rivers were really low.
How is this hike in Winter? Do you have any winter hikes you suggest for an experienced outdoorsman from the East?
Stan, I love your videos of Park hikes. The few times I've been in Parks hiking, I walk with large jingle bells on my boots, especially if I'm alone. I see you walking quietly & alone...it gives me chills. I've had Sows with cubs cross hiking trails I'm on, so I keep my bear spray in my hand. Did I see a sign that prohibited firearms in that park?
Love your videos. Thank you for sharing your hikes with us less fortunate.🙂 (One thing...would you put text up as to how far you are actually away from the wildlife when you shoot them? Kinda a disclaimer for all those literally no brainers out there.) Thanks again for your time out there....
This a beautiful area! I wonder what is your favorite area in the park is Stan.
Good channel!
My first time up slough was 1960, with my uncle, go every year.
1960 wow! Did you see any bears?
@@StanMills yes not so many tourons then
Well done content Stan. I just happened upon this Chanel today. You got some really nice light in some shots. I was pleasantly surprised to see the rangers horses in rope halters with no metal buckles and no bits!
Beautiful
Some of those trails look like quad trails. Interesting that they utilize them up there
That trail is used by the Silver Tip Ranch. They can only use horse and wagon.
There is no better channel to experience the wildlife and beauty of Yellowstone. It feels like we are there with you on the hike. One question: How close were you to the black bear at the 1:50 mark?. I appreciate it when you zoom out after a close up. It gives us a view of the awesome environment and also informs us how you approach photographing the animals.
He was about half mile up the trail at 5:30 am. I was walking by and looked left and I saw him just sitting there watching me walk by. He was maybe about 20 steps or 20 yards away. Thanks for your comments.
I wonder if those bridges still stand. That one looked close to getting picked up, and this a couple years ago on what might just be normal runoff.
Love seeing the Park Rangers with no bits on their horses!
the nicest videos on ynp ever. no need to look further this channel
Thank you very much. It is getting about time to start seeing wildlife.
Stan, I think I have watched each and every video you have posted. They are all fantastic and so informative. They are beautiful! I love your Grizzlies but also love the little critters. I will be in Yellowstone for three days and plan to hike Sept 14. I will be alone and like you I want to be on the trail at dawn. I am experienced and hike a lot like you. I walk softly and keep my eyes open. I am also a photographer and hope to get some good shots of the wildlife. My dilemma is where to hike for one day. I am leaning towards Slough Creek Trail. Possibly Lamar Valley Trail. Would you agree or do you have another suggestion. Thank you again for your beautiful videos!
Art, exploring is exploring. Go wherever sounds good to you. I was up above slough creek last week on Frederick peak. I didn’t see any wildlife. A couple days ago I was off trail in an area where no one ever goes and saw no wildlife. That’s how it is this time of year. I am going to go up Bighorn on the highway 89 side this weekend. Things should be getting better when you start hiking in mid September. I hope you plan to make some videos.
How do you get that map that you are using at the beginning of the video??
Thanks so much Stan for another great hike! Do you film your entire hike or just the interesting parts? And can you or someone please tell me what the animal was at the very end of the video! It look likes squirrel on steroids! LOL Thanks again for a great hike Stan, God bless you & be safe!
Mags, I mainly video what I think is interesting, mainly wildlife, but I put in scenery and hiking along the trail otherwise the videos would be only 5 minutes long. I learned that a lot of people may want to plan and do the same hikes so that is why I show a lot of video with my GoPro just hiking down the trail. The animal at the end is a Yellow-bellied marmot; also called rock-chuck. Thank you for your comments.
Thanks Stan for response, it's greatly appreciated!
Great video without any annoying music. Do you carry bear spray?
Sir, what type camera equipment are you using?
Do they pack horse feed too? Would take a few 50 pound bags to feed those horses for a week.
I'm in a wheelchair, so hiking is out of the question for me. However, I use to be a horse trainer, and would love to see the park on horseback. Could you do a video on horseback trails and camp areas?
Kim, I am not totally sure, but I think most trails are open to horseback riding. Just can't do it if the trail is muddy I think.
are they rangers or govt workers? when I worked in the park (many moons ago) for Hamilton stores. The rangers didn't normally clear trails. There were specific park service workers that went out for a couple weeks at a time to do that. They rode horseback and packed in with mules. the horses and mules were beautifully kept.
I have never seen park rangers clear trails either but that is what he said.
did anybody accompany you or did you do it alone? I understand the park suggests 3 or more people? I am heading there alone for a week in the same area and would love to know your thoughts. Apologies if the question was already asked and answered. Thank you!
I almost always hike and camp in the backcountry alone. My thoughts, I’ve been doing this most of my life. There is no reason why you can’t do it. I think it is more of an adventure by yourself. Thanks for your comments.
Good video Stan and I share your assessment of park rangers. Sure there are some bad ones that I have run into who have forgotten that they manage taxpayer land. But there are bad in every profession. I think they get a generally unfair reputation from those who seem to be unable to police themselves. Those folks cause more restrictions for all of us. It seems you frequently encounter wildlife on that trail. Anyway thanks for sharing your hike and views. Blessings.
Hi Stan, what brand boot are you hiking with these days? I use Asolo, which I love, but you seem to walk through water confident that you won't get wet.
Clay, look in my description section of the video. Thanks
Kenetrek FTW!
Clay Demelo I purchased a pair (womens) Kenetrek boots through Stan’s Amazon store - the most best and most comfortable boot I have ever worn.
