I am in awe at the size of those packs!! Seriously though I swear the Uintas and heavy packs are synonymous. Great video helps me battle this cabin fever.
No doubt! Those are some big packs! People paid the price of those big packs on that trip! Luckily, there were lessons learned and we are a bit lighter these days.
You make such outstanding videos. Thank you for the time and effort. I was glued to the video because your photography and editing are fabulous. I thought I was watching PBS. Thanks again.
My buddy and I hiked to Dead horse several years ago. Went over the 4th of July weekend. Fished for 2 days at Dead Horse lake and didn't even get a bite. There was still so much snow up there, you could hear the rocks falling from the cliffs as the snow was melting and the rocks were giving way. So decided to climb up over the pass, and down into the upper Rock Creek drainage to try the fishing over there. Had to climb up in snow the whole way, could hardly make out the trail, so pretty much just climbed straight up the snow chutes. Only planning a day trip over there, so just brought day packs, and left camp at Dead Horse lake. Got to the top, and just as we were about to drop down into Rock Creek, a HUGE snowstorm blew in. Colder th, wind blowing, and snow coming at us sideways. We found a little spot out of the wind and hunkered down right on the ridgeline/divide in the rocks. Waited for a few hours for the storm to pass, and it never did. Decided probably best to abandon the idea, and just head back to Dead Horse lake. As we started down to the lake, the wind was blowing so bad and the snow was coming at us so hard, and that hill is SSOOO steep and we couldn't find the trail, we decided...... F-it.... So we just strapped our day packs on our chests, found a snow chute that made it almost all the way down to the lake, layed down on the snow, lifted our boots, and RODE IT... all the way down. From the top!! Hootin and hollerin the whole way!!! Of course, as soon as we got back to camp, and got a fire started and got into dry clothes the weather cleared up... But, we STILL talk about that trip, and sledding down that mountain to this day. What a wonderful memory, luckily neither one of us got hurt, and we can still reminisce and laugh about it today. Right at about 12:21, that's where we were standing, and looking when we decided to ride a snow chute down. Then we had to walk along the top 12:29 to find the chute that had the least rocks sticking thru the snow and went down the farthest. 12:46, that's about where we jump in the snow, and rode that ***** all the way down 12:57 to the lake. THANK YOU for posting this video with these scenes in it. I have forwarded it to my buddy. Brings back A LOT of memories
That pass really is no joke. I think it's eroded in sections high up as well over recent years between when I first did it and my experience with it last month making it really sketchy. I found it was definitely worse coming down Dead Horse Lake side than going up and over away from the lake down to Rock Creek side as I struggled with it a bit on a solo loop hike through there last month. Nice trip!
@@mountainwanderer I hope a trail crew can do something with it by then. Not sure how to go about doing that safely though unless they have a good way to anchor themselves. Wonder how it was originally carved out. I just watched my old Highline video of the day I went over my first time, and it's definitely in worse shape now than it was 4 years ago.
I went over that pass a few years ago when I hiked the Highline Trail, and that pass was easily the hardest pass to go over. I had butt-puckering anxiety just watching your video, because it made me instantly remember my experience going over Deadhorse Pass.
Cool video! I've been to upper rock creek 5 times, but only ever hiked to the top of dead horse once. It is breathtaking! I have fished at Phinney, Anderson, Ledge, and Continent. I caught the biggest fish at ledge, but Phinney is my most favorite.
I spent a month up there when I was 15 living off the land we started the same place you guys did but we came out at moon lake it was a good time I will always remember. I'm going to pack in there this summer with my little girl but we will be taking horses!! We also took red know pass i think the trail might be easier lol..
Dead horse that's the easy pass, LOL. Sure is beautiful! I wish I had your camera and editing skills. If you go back try nymphs at dead horse lake, I have always done really well with those.
I really like your post trip voice overs! The narration sounds like a PBS video. And the camera, wow really shows the colors so well. Can I ask what kind of camera are you using?
Good eye (and ear)! Nope, I wasn't on this trip. After going through all of the footage to make the video, I certainly wish I would've been. Going over Dead Horse Pass would've been an experience!
I love Dead Horse pass I was 10 my first time and I'm headed back this Summer. Such a satisfying challenge. I use pack goats now to help lighten my load. I do remember my Dad tying us kids up on a rope for the crossing just in case we slipped, which did end up being a good idea as my brother slip on the snow, the rope stopped him. (the goats are made for that trail) Every time I cross I always look for horse bones as people still try to take them across that pass.
Thank you! It's a bit sketchy with snow on it for sure. Where are we going? Never quite know how it's going to turn out but we hope to make it back into the Uintas, Bob Marshall Wilderness, Mallard-Larkins and the Wind River Range. We'll see how many of those pan out. Thanks for watching!

What a beautiful area. Fishing looked great and that pass looked like a real challenge. Take care, Al
The Uintas are truly beautiful. Not the first time that he has done some crazy hiking for great fishing. :)
Awesome! Heading up there this October :)
Sweet! We've been hearing reports that the High Uintas are already getting snow!
@@mountainwanderer Yes, just this last week we even got snow as far south as Mt. Timpanogos along the wasatch front!
@@DawnMoonWolf Wow, early this year. Hopefully some of our crew will be heading into the Uintas soon!
You summed it up at the end, amazing...
If you ever have the chance, I highly recommend the High Uintas Wilderness. I've only been on a handful of trips here, but it is always incredible!
You make such outstanding videos. Thank you for the time and effort. I was glued to the video because your photography and editing are fabulous. I thought I was watching PBS. Thanks again.
You are too kind. I'm glad you enjoyed it! That is the kind of inspiration I need to keep producing these. Thanks!
Thanks for the great movie.

That is one hell of a story! The pass is definitely a scary one, I can imagine it full of snow!
Yes! One of my favorite areas. Nicely done sir.
Thanks! The High Uintas are definitely one of our favorite places. Already looking forward to our next visit.
Amazing trip, always look forward to your videos
Thank you! This was an epic trip!
Awesome video! Thanks for posting. Waiting for that snow to melt now..
Beautiful country! Thanks for watching!
Great video, that is some outstanding landscapes. I really got to get to the High Uintas soon.
The High Uintas are one of my favorite places. I haven't been there in a couple years now, but I hope to change that next year.
That high-mountain sky... I love it. Brilliant blue skys. I swear, the higher elevation, the greater the blues are.
I think that you're right!

It's already bad... and getting worse. Oh boy! We're hoping to thru-hike the Highline at some point, so we'll be back over that thing again.

Really nice edit man! Love the Uintas! Cheers!
Thanks! The Uintas are one of my favorite places to hike!
My goodness, that descent was something else!
Deadhorse Pass is a bit scary. I think we might have to do it again when we do the Highline Trail.

That is awesome that you've been able to explore the area and fish so many of those lakes! We'll be back through there at some point.

That sounds amazing! Horses are definitely the better way to get in there.
What ya doing so far south ?????
But I'm glad 😊👍🏽
Another killer vid in the cyber space world 🌍👍🏽👍🏽 .... Thanks amigo 🤠😎
I wasn't actually on this trip. My nephew did this one with some friends from work.

We're hoping to get back there at some point, maybe on a Highline Trail thru-hike. We'll try it out. Thanks!
Did you see lots of wildlife on this trek? That’s my favorite part especially the Rocky Mountain elk! Did you see any of those
Only saw fish on this one... unfortunately.
I really like your post trip voice overs! The narration sounds like a PBS video. And the camera, wow really shows the colors so well. Can I ask what kind of camera are you using?
Thanks! Glad you're enjoying them! For most trips we use an iPhone & a GoPro. I don't remember what models were used on this trip.
Another great video, did you not make the trip? I noticed you weren't in the video and a different narrative voice

Wow! That's a hell of a way to grow up on Dead horse Pass! Best of luck this summer!
Great edit! That Pass looks nasty, yet incredible both at the same time! Where are you going in 2019???

I can see why it's called Dead Horse Pass
It's a scary pass for sure. You need to be careful when traversing it.
Nice but turn the music down
Thanks for the tip!
