Now just a bit of extra info. That building in the middle at the harbour? It's called "Het witte huis"(The white house) and at the time it was build it was the highest building in Europe. Also it's one of the few buildings left standing after the bombardment. The round metrostation next to Markthal. Station Blaak, not only a metro but also an underground train station. And tram and bus above ground. The building with the big yellow pipes is the library and the round building with the pointy roof in between the library and cube houses, we call "Het Potlood"(the Pencil). Almost all remarkable architecture, monuments, bridges etc have a nickname in Rotterdam. Oh one last thing, the mini golden gate bridge. It's called the Willemsbrug. Just my 2 cts Grtz Yvette

So nice to see your appreciation of Rotterdam! I was born there long ago and now 'technically' work there (the yellow building @2:25) although I'm working from home the past time due to covid restrictions. Love the city!
The façades at the 10:25 mark show two styles of reconstruction architecture. Witteveen, the city architect who drew up the first reconstruction plan, wanted "historical" façades, echoing Dutch architectural styles from the 17th and 18th century. Witteveen wanted to keep to the old street pattern as well. He was ousted and his successor, Van Traa embraced a functional, utilitarian architecture, where only the building's functions were specified, but not its appearance or façades. In this street you see these approaches side by side. Few people know that after the bombing quite a few iconic buildings were still standing. Apart from the St Laurenskerk and the Library (now Erasmus University College) also the old City Hall on Kipstraat were still standing and the synagogue on Botersloot, where the big red English looking building now stands. A remark about Piet Blom's Blaak Forest complex: when we moved to Rotterdam, 20 years ago, the inner city was almost uninhabited. For a long time the cube houses were the only reasonably priced family homes in the neighbourhood. Eventually we ended up in an apartment opposite.
Next time you should show these as well - The main shopping center - Central Station - Euromast and Euromast park and Parklaan - Museum park with three musea, and the sliver art storage bowl - historical Delfs Haven - Veerhaven - The SS Rotterdam - Heemraad singel - The Football stadiums And there are probably some great places I forgot

Those windows in the Pencil building with the half-rounded bottoms have a fairly wide window sill on the inside. Purportedly this was designed to comfortably accommodate a sleeping cat. I used to live in one of these houses (not in the Pencil but the ones visible at 4:25 on the right) and my cats did like those windows.

In the 50s and 60s Rotterdam was built to accommodate more cars with wide streets and lots of car lanes. When in the 70s people started protesting because of children dying in busy traffic they decided to take out a lot of car lanes and replaced them with bike lanes and sidewalks. That's why the streets are so spacious.
1:16 No, the destruction of the inner city was not because the Germans were afraid of the allies taking over the port as suggested, nor did the bombarded part have any significance to the harbor system. The intent was to create so much civil damage as to get the Dutch forces to surrender, which in fact they had already done when the bombardment happened. Whether that bombardment was the result of a miscommunication among the Germans or an outright war crime is still under debate. Much later (1944) they *did* blow up harbor equipment, quays, and sank ships in order to block the harbor from being usable. But for that, they did not destroy the city itself. And thirdly, this particular monument was for merchant sailors who perished.
8:30 Shortly after the war, they had no money or materials to put any fancy buildings there. Nearly all the stuff that you can show here was built from the 1990s onward. The "metro station" (combined metro / train) I sometimes call the "oyster".
Check out Louvain La Neuve in Belgium... a complete new city build from 1969 to accommodate the Université de Louvain, the French-language counterpart of the Dutch-language university of Leuven founded in 1425... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louvain-la-Neuve
The story around the destruction is completly different. The center was destroyed during the german assault on the Netherlands in 1940. They blackmailed the dutch commander of Rotterdam to give up the defence of the city, which messed up the german timetable for the conquering of the Netherlands, or have his city bombed into submission. The Commander gave in but unfortunately only half of the bomberfleet could be reached. The other half bombed the citycenter and turned it into ashes. After the war the center was not rebuild in its previous form and they decided togo for modern architecture.
It bothers me that only Rotterdam is know for the cube houses. The city Helmond was the first in The Netherlands and even the prototypes where built there.

@@You-mr3lo just because you have some cube houses doesn’t make you unique... you got nothing on Rotterdam.
Cube is like being in pyramid atticks every floor
Nice video 👍 and nice tacxcras border
In the 50s and 60s Rotterdam was built to accommodate more cars with wide streets and lots of car lanes. When in the 70s people started protesting because of children dying in busy traffic they decided to take out a lot of car lanes and replaced them with bike lanes and sidewalks. That's why the streets are so spacious.
Wow amazing
The "Blaaktoren" is nicknamed "the pencil".
Dat wilde ik ook zeggen :) Fijne dag toegewenst.
Potlood haha
Maybe the bridge looks like a swan from the sky, or far away 😄
No, just if you tilt your head slightly! Although mostly I hear references to a goose instead of a swan.. But hey
I love the way you talking 😅😅🤘👍👍
Wow just amazing 👏 😍 🙌 👌 ❤

Love from India 🇮🇳
Check out Louvain La Neuve in Belgium... a complete new city build from 1969 to accommodate the Université de Louvain, the French-language counterpart of the Dutch-language university of Leuven founded in 1425... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louvain-la-Neuve
9:18, you passed Loetje without eating there? dude you missed out!
My hometown ❤
The story around the destruction is completly different. The center was destroyed during the german assault on the Netherlands in 1940. They blackmailed the dutch commander of Rotterdam to give up the defence of the city, which messed up the german timetable for the conquering of the Netherlands, or have his city bombed into submission. The Commander gave in but unfortunately only half of the bomberfleet could be reached. The other half bombed the citycenter and turned it into ashes. After the war the center was not rebuild in its previous form and they decided togo for modern architecture.
shooting spot of Inception 2 should be in this city 😅
Agreed 👍
belle ville a visiter belle vidéo
Merci
It’s a very pharaoh city a lot of Ms and squares. Concept of 4
It bothers me that only Rotterdam is know for the cube houses. The city Helmond was the first in The Netherlands and even the prototypes where built there.
Je hebt gelijk maar ja Helmond is nu eenmaal niet Rotterdam
Maarja Helmond is Helmond :\
