Can you help me I have 2002 4Runner. I can seem to get the right sensor can you send me the which one is the upstream is it the one near the motor and downstream near the muffler?
A couple items our 5min mechanic did not mention. THIS IS NOT A 5 MIN JOB! No way on a 20 year old car those bolts are coming off easy. They need to soak, give it at least an hour if not overnight. You can also run the car for five minutes first to heat things up, which may help, but be careful not to burn yourself on the exhaust. Its also not lefty loosey on the top/ front O2 sensor, its upside down so it is opposite, that may be obvious to some, but if you are say an accountant, you'll appreciate that. Last to unhook the O2 sensor from the connection get a flat head and put it in the raised section and lift up and pull. Hope that fills in some of the gaps.
Thanks for adding to this. None of my videos are in depth how tos but more so quick references/a video diary for me to look back on my previous projects. I recommend Timmy the toolman for in depth how tos. For this particular truck, this was in fact a 5 minute job, maybe even less. I also have a 2000 though and it took me an hour after I had to remove the whole pipe and chisel the nuts off. Very dependent on where the truck has spent most of it’s life. Heat and plenty of a good penetrating oil is your friend. Best to spray it days leading up to the job if you’re concerned. For anyone reading this, DO NOT use an open ended wrench as you will round off the nuts.
He’s correct. It took me longer to unplug it than to get the censor off. 1/4 drive with 10mm and it was done. The rear was 2-3 minute job with 22mm crowfoot
Bleeding breaks in these needs two people. Person in the driver’s seat turns the ignition and pushes the breaks simultaneously person 2 opens the bleed valve. Close it then have them turn off the car. My 8 year daughter helped me.
I don’t mind the efficiency… it’s the lack of range. The fuel tank is too small. I wouldn’t mind putting more money at once if I could get more gas and go more than 200 miles. I get that better mpg will increase my range, but the best I’ve ever heard anyone going on the 3.4 is 250-300 miles. I’m seriously considering the auxiliary fuel tank mod for mine. Idc how old the truck is. This is my forever vehicle.
@jvogler_art4708 yes, I have offers to sell mine and it will die with me, but the range is a problem. I wish I had the V8 out of my GX460 in it. I average about 20 mpg with very decent power.
@@jvogler_art4708 thats why you have a cargo area lol, put like one of those big ol fishing boat tanks, you could even put a dispenser like on a gatorade bucket lmao
I wanna buy that o2 sensor but I’m in Kalifornia and that says “non California” so next smog I’ll probably get a fail if I do. Trying to find the denso one that’ll work. Don’t wanna buy any other brand
Yea son, mine is running hella rich, I got a 95 3.slow that burns gas like a bulldozer. It’s absolutely insane. I’m thinking about replacing the o2 sensor or the fuel injector
I think we have the same 4Runner. 1999 Desert Dune Metallic? I only get 12mpg on mine so I’m going to try this! Any other tips for improving gas milage?
I ended up selling this 4runner to a friend and shortly after a coil pack went out. After he replaced all 3 coils, he said he increased his gas mileage by around 2-3 mpg. Sometimes when the coil starts getting old they aren’t as efficient. Not sure if that will always work, but maybe!
I gained back around 2 mpg from this. This particular truck had a failing coil pack that wasn’t noticeable until later on. Once it was changed it made the most difference. (According to a friend of mine I sold it to)
hey, is that a 2WD version Runner? have a high idle deal too? if it does, you could be looking at P0325 code, that's Knock Sensor bank 1 or wiring for this knock sensor, IMO this 3rd gens could be up to 220 miles per tank, so maybe it's a timing deal, which it's affecting your mpg, i'm about to 175 per tank right now, and i think that's over exceeded, i already bougth this upstream, so, idk, maybe could be a deal between IAC valve and knock sensors, please make an update video about your mpg improvement, could be really helpful, thanks ramen bro
No it’s an original 4wd. No codes so I doubt it’s the knock sensor unless it’s just not throwing any. Timing is spot on. Just did the belt myself and triple check everything. Also it idles right at the factory rpm. I have honestly no idea what it could be tbh. I took the roof rack off and it helped a decent amount.
@@ramenbuilt6411 ok, so, you're attached to 175 miles per tank with a roof rack on, right? nice to meet you this way, mines is a 97' 3rd gen 4wd auto SR5, which i'm so in love with it, same color as yours, same fender type, i'm running 3" ironman coils rear and 2.5" front, sitting on 285/75R16 on SCS F5 w, right now i'm working on my front bumper, so, running with no front bumper this week, maybe over 65mph that could be a plus on a mpg decreases, i'm glad your ecu isnt throwing any code, what i concern about timing, once knock sensor start fails ecu could be always retarding/advancing timing, but if you're not having codes on your clean 4Ru should be just fine, sorry about long write up, remember what i ask at the very first start on this comment, plz, nice 4Runner you got over there, real charm buddy
I was thinking of changing my upstream O2 sensor because I just bought a 2000 4Runner Limited with 190K miles in immaculate condition for $500 from the original owner who drove it off the lot brand new. I'm getting 195-200 miles on a full tank of gas and it doesn't seem right coming from a Toyota.
I get 15 at 256k miles and the previous owners abused this truck. 15 mpg wouldn’t be so bad if the gas tank was bigger.. but with 32 inch tires I can only go about 210 miles before fuel light comes on. Wish I had a bigger gas tank.
I have never heard of a gen 3 getting 10 mpg even with 31 inch tires, I have a 4 inch lift on my 98 with 33s and I get 14 mpg, something seriously wrong with this rig
It ended up being a mix of the bad 02 and a coil pack that wasn’t firing properly. Check engine came on one day and the coil pack was changed. Getting 14 currently with the new owner.
Also I’m intrigued about that master cylinder replacement. Mine has no abs and I can’t figure out why.

Did your check engine light go off after replacing the sensor? Or how did you get the light off after the replacement?
Obd scanner

I was told the part number for the upstream is 234-9002 and down steam was 4162…..big difference in price is there a difference ?
There is apparently a difference in the sensor value quality
I’m not sure this is right. The pn for my upstream sensor on my 98 4runner is 234-4162
I have 2 4runners. One with 375,000 and one with 405,000. I can say this about them. They are not fuel efficient lol.

I think rockauto may have a California one.
Thinking about doing this on my 98 3.4l 4x4. Did it improve your mpg?

What’s the number for the downstream?
What year is your 4Runner.. Amazon says this part number does not fit my 02 4 runner
Mine is a 96. I know it will fit 96-2000. 01-02 are sometimes different. There’s also a California version.
Did you use a pick to get the plug undone?
Dont you love how people skip these things are total PITA!
You can. However, I always seem to have the best luck just doing them by hand. If you’re wearing gloves it’ll be near impossible though by hand.
Did this ever fix your issue?? Didn’t see an update video. I’m getting like 8 mpg 😅

Simple and to the point thanks
Clean mass air flow sensor too then clean iac idle air controller
How do you clean the IAC valve ?
What size tires and lift do you have?
Bilstein/ome 2.5 inch lift and 265/70/17 tires.

I was getting about 140 miles to a tank, after replacing the o2 I can get 175.

Your part is less than 20% of what Denso goes for on rock auto. Any chance it was a fake?

I’m selling my 4runner because of horrible gas mileage. Love everything about it but the gas is killing me
Having a similar issue with a 3RZ engine
Me too, I got a little Corolla but the guy who sold it to me was shady.
