I have been teaching yoga since 1999, and I I believe it has been indispensable I n my life. It has given me a way of life, where I have been able to connect to the deepest aspects within myself and has allowed me to see and appreciate the spirit within all beings and things.
Yoga has made me a better artist/painter, and has been teaching me how to have relationships that are based in truth and open mindedness, and it has been extremely healing for the body mind and spirit.

It wasn’t until I started yoga and deep breathing that I realized how often I had been holding my breath when I got tense or stressed. This is a common response for many of us, but yoga makes us become aware of it. Then we can do something about it-breathe!

I'm shocked and wanted to share. I'm a subscriber and a few months back started to look into proper breathing again when hearing myself huff in FB vids I make for friends, I'm 55 and always sound out of breath (people have told me I always have but I didn't notice until filming myself). It's crucial as I'm now developing sleep apnea, which scares me. My Toronto born, white, hippie parents had followed Hinduism all through my growing up and I was in the process of trying to remember when I unlearned proper breathing when, like a miracle, your vid popped up. Anyway I was shocked when it came to me how my breathing in the chest came to be a decades long habit. I remember now through my teens and twenties forcing this because young women were always worried about looking fat, I was only 110 pounds but peer/societal pressure. I wanted to keep my belly as small, tight and flat as possible, I would NEVER breathe deep and bulge my belly, and with how tight jeans were one often couldn't. I have a clear memory now of training myself to breath while holding my belly muscles in as tight as possible. I would even use a visual image to help, imagining that the inside of my belly button was stuck to my spine. I would hold everything in all day, everyday breathing shallow through my chest only. This is frankly sad to remember but it's made me realize I can in fact relearn how to breathe and that, unlike right now, it will become an unconscious automatic proper new way (right now I can only breathe right when I make time to purposely work on it). Your video will help me so much with healing, much gratitude to you Rajiv :)

It's taken me a while to sit down to watch this. I didn't want to feel rushed. Thank You for your wonderful 'life lessons'.
A few years ago, I had a wonderful yoga teacher that would hold 'Breathing classes". It was a blessing! All of the yoga teachers in the studio I went to (almost every day for one class or another) talked about breathing during our practice. One said, "just watch a baby breathe, it's a natural thing to breath with your abdomen and not so much your lungs. I've never forgotten that and a lot of my other breathing lessons and use them casually on a regular basis. (I still practice yoga every day.)
I remember, one time I had a doctor appointment that I was not looking forward to. I arrived early and sat in my car for a bit. I often listen to 'spa' or 'zen' type music and while I was sitting there a voice on the radio started leading me through a short breathing excercise. I went into the appointment a lot calmer that I was feeling just a few minutes earlier.

Good morning Rajiv. That was wonderful to start. Mind-breathing correlation is very true.
The meaning of the sanskrt word yoga has been convoluted by the Westerners and partly Indians too!
It comes from the root word "yuj" meaning "link, connect". The words in sanskrit language have multiple meanings. Hence it allows for ambiguity and multiple interpretations.
The language Tamil, unlike Sanskrt, which is older than Sanskrt(99.9999999999% of the people do not know) is very precise, logical and doesn't allow ambiguities. Tamil is considered as the language of the lawyers as its logical and consistent.
The Hindu God Lord Krishna(there are many Gods in Hindu religion and I am reminded of the great comedian George Carlin 😂) is known as Yogeshwar, meaning the Lord(Ishwar) of all Yogas.
What it really means is that He is the connector/link of All things in the Universe.
In body building, there is an Ab exercise called vacuum exercise which Arnold Schwarzenegger made it famous.
The diaphragm separates the lower and upper torso. Thirty percent of breathing is done by chest cavity and 70% is done by the diaphragm.
When you inhale O2, the diaphragm(and the chest) automatically extends out and when you exhale CO2, they are sucked in.
We are made up of atoms. When one loses weight(physics), what happens? What did the person lose and where did that matter go?
Too many "so called" fitness gurus have confused people's minds with calories and what not. This gave rise to zillion diets and yet we have been the reigning champion of obesity for years.
When a person loses weight, that "lost" matter went out as carbon dioxide and water🤣.
When you suck in the abs, you are exhaling CO2. When you do exercise through respiration and perspiration(water as sweat), you lose weight...
Forget about calorie count. I know people who have told me "I consume less than 1000 calories, yet don't lose weight". If you don't understand the basics, its hard to understand any topic, let alone remember it till your last breath...
Sorry for going on a tangent. I just wrote in case, anyone is struggling to lose weight.
Rajiv, You are so precious and a rare gem.
Thank you for another wonderful mind/soul searching video. Have a great weekend❤

Rajiv! This is such important content right now. The world has always been complicated and fraught but it seems that the set of factors we're faced with now is causing such fatigue and fear. It seems I've been noticing the idea of yoga popping up in all sorts of unconnected places in my life. I feel like I need to follow this line of thought and learn yoga. And this morning - it's you teaching us! As always, thank you for your decision, method, and style in teaching people,
eta Also, breathing. It's so simple, so effective, yet it's rarely something I prioritize as a deliberate practice. Maybe a daily alarm on the phone will help. Finally, can you share the music you played at the end of your video? ❤

This is such an encouragement. Ive been struggling a lot and keep feeling pulled toward expanding breath work and it felt really frustrating bc it didnt feel like there was any real meaning i could find. Until you said chixken or egg and hand and hand with what ails our thoughts bc i have beem finding it easier to concentrate when i Neuro breath but then i had to try blocking and then i thought well thats just a substitution for longer breaths so i was breathing deeper... Feeling simultaneously unsatisfied with the practice and results. And now i see they were both skewed. Sorry to ramble but this explained a lot.

It took me decades to understand why I can't do the full yogi breathing. Since my visit at the ENT I know my nose bone is not in the middle and blocking from time to time one nose hole.

Does incorporating the patting/beats make it more meditative? I think it would have this affect on me. I’ll try it when the world is still tomorrow morning. 😊
Thank you, Rajiv, for your contribution to the betterment of the human race. ❤

Hi Kelli, no, you're not supposed to be patting those beats, I was just doing that to audibly count so you could follow along - I couldn't do the breathing and speak at the same time, hence the patting.

Lol is Rajiv trolling us now?
After the recent "How To Walk?" we were chuckling with friends like "What's gonna be next? Ho to blink? How to breathe?"
    And there you go...

Rajiv's muscles are looking big...I feel you are subtlety putting down the West. I love that you embrace a catholic view. We should embrace East and West but avoid putting one down. The West has good aspects just as the East does. Both have bad parts as well.
