My guess as to why this happened is that excessive play developed that wasn't addressed, leading the outer FH body to wobble and cause the pawls to hit the "teeth" (not sure what they're called) on the inside of the outer FH body at an angle and gradually chisel away at them and wear them out so there was no longer enough metal to engage, causing the pawls to slip. Although, the fact that the cogs appears to rotate at different speeds in the first part of the video suggests that perhaps there was an issue with the cassette or FH splines as well.
I was assuming that the way the cogs appeared to rotate inconsistently was an artifact of video framerate, like how wheels sometimes appear to rotate backwards.
The weird thing is that the damage is not evenly distributed. I am curious about the state of the chain which was used to cause such a damage to a freehub body.
For some reason, this bushing manufacturer has a high percentage of defective freehubs. The bike was used for one season, the chain and cassette were still in good condition
@@andrelange9877 You could grease your freehub body everytime when you change your cassette, but there is a specific freehub grease for it. Too much or the wrong grease and the pawls can not move properly.
@@MrBoxershorts16 I thought I should grease the freehub when I feel the pawls tic-tic noise gets louder to the point the neighbors can hear me arriving home after pedaling.
You should NEVER colect balls with a magnet. This makes bals magnetic and they'll collect all steell dust. Also do not mix balls from inside and outside rings
@@makantahi3731 "the same" they are only brand new. outer and inner row works with complitly different load and conditions. And even after 1000km they have different wear. It really matters
@@Oleksii_Popov I disassembled many cassette bodies and did not notice any difference in the wear of balls, cups and cones. All these parts do not carry any weight, but only the force of the chain and that only while the cassette is at rest, so the cassette does not rotate while under load, unlike the main bearings which carry the weight of the bike, the rider and all reactive forces due to bumps in the road. In the cassette there are 25 balls(shimano/mostly) on each side and all parts are made of very hard/hardened steel. The only thing to watch out for is that the same number of balls that were taken out are returned to each side.perhaps only one side would wear out if the end gears were constantly driven, for example the first two or last two gears, and even then there would be no wear as in the main bearings, but there would be a depression from the balls in the cone or cup

Superbe vidéo et belle investigation pour découvrir le problème de vitesse !
Glad to see you retain that tool for opening the freeub body. I kept my own because the one used by the rest of the shop was usually in bad shape.

Thank you for your comment! 😘 Almost all freehubs from this manufacturer have some kind of defect

Taki czyściutki rower ktoś przyniósł a wewnątrz taki dramat.

1/4??(wath is the size of internal balls? 1/4??
En milímetros, mide 3,175 mm
Można wiedzieć jaka to piasta? Wydawałoby się, że dość solidna na łożyskach maszynowych, a materiał bębenka z plasteliny.
To może być Novatec z aluminiowym bębenkiem bo mają 3 zapadki ale głowy nie daje sobie uciąć

When does this type of damage happen? Any ways to prevent it?
It happened to my hubs when I pedal on uphills using heavy gearsspeed.
Does greasing more often help prevent this problem from happening?

Thanks for the advice, we didn't even think about it🙀
Grease and oil collect steel dust...what shall we do?
both side balls are the same dimension, why not mix?

Thank you for your feedback 😽
Wow this just happened to my Scott hard tail 940 and th bike is pretty much new smh idk what to do
I sympathize with you. You'll have to look for a new drum for your hub, and if not, you'll need to re-spoke the wheel.
Warranty?
The warranty is from me
you should have noticed the irregular operation in the beginning and then serviced the hub-reshape sprogs and teeth
Can’t you just replace the free hub?
I guess it's because of no grease inside? Or maybe because of age?
No, because of very active riding, when you bang the bike pedals sharply on the cogs,
