    My sons cozmo battery use to last 5mins and shut down, I saw John's video on battery replacement looked way complicated for me, got in touch with John for his services, sent cozmo to him on Friday and got it back a few days later, now cozmo battery lasts way over an hour and keeps going. Thank you John you're amazing gave a whole lease of life to the bot. My son absolutely loves it. Highly recommended to anyone needing battery replacement. Mohan

    Excellent tutorial but a little over my capabilities and I was worried I will not be able to put him back together properly. So instead, I used the service that John provides and we already have Cozmo back to life and working perfectly. We sent it by post to John and received it back within a few days, it really was a great service; highly recommended!

    I highly recommend John's replacement service as we purchased our Cozmo second hand and the battery was pretty much dead from the start. After watching this video, I opted to take out Johns offer to replace the stock battery with the upgraded battery. I posted it to John on a Friday afternoon and my cosmo was back Tuesday morning. Excellent service and value for money.
    Thank you so much John Judge :) 10/10

    Thanks for the video. I was able to change the battery. My little girl is happy! I did not find a 503040 lipo near where I live, but I replaced it with a 403035 lipo 450 mAh. It does the job! Most tricky part was to reassemble the head i think.

    Hi John. Just wanted to say thank you for this post. I was gifted a sickly Cozmo who could only handle a few minutes of play and decided to risk surgery on him. Got a new battery and followed your guidance to get him apart. My soldering skills are not that good so I didn't risk touching the circuit board and instead went with cutting the wires as close to the dead battery as possible then exposing the core. I twisted the new wires on gently and then added blob of solder and electrical tape to project them. All went back together and now have a fully functioning Cozmo who handled an hour plus earlier with no sign of red on his back. Couple things I noted as I went through the process, it takes more force than seems right to get the "geared" arm off. I could see how the "key" worked and I was at the right angle but it just didn't want to let go! Re-assembly of the head was also very tricky. I didn't clock at first that the bars that the screws connect into have a way around - both in terms of left/right and the shaped ends that go into the right hand side of his head (where the spring is). In the end I found it best to attach those end first, then slide the LED over the lower bar, align the top bit and the windscreen and then screw the left side of his head on last. He is a very cute little thing now he works fully!

      Hey Simon! Thanks for your reply! I love reading stories like this. I agree on the two points you make - I think I gloss over them in the video but will definitely revisit and make a clearer demonstration for future reference. The gear arm has a definite pop when removed, which can be daunting the first time. And the head is also very fiddly when having to line up the tubes and spring to get the assembly back together. Great to hear that you got your unit running around again!

    Hi John, just wanted to say thanks for your videos on this. I bought Cozmo before my daughter was born and by the time she was old enough to really enjoy him the battery was only giving 5-10 minutes. I have been promising her for months to replace the battery and she always loves watching your videos and reminding me.
    Today I got around to it and your videos were very helpful. My daughter new what to do from memory from your videos and was giving me tips. (She is four next month) Cozmo is back together with a new 600 mah battery and currently charging nicely. Happy daughter. Thanks.

    I bought Cozmo used and it tended to randomly shut down very frequently. I excluded battery problems because by repositioning it in its base it immediately returned ready to go again. I've been thinking about issues with wifi disconnecting or any interference but I've noticed that when cozmo loses wifi connection it doesn't tend to shut down immediately. So I followed this guide and opened it up and found a lot of rust between the electrical contacts, as well as in the 5 minute video. I easily cleaned everything up with isopropyl alcohol and now it seems to work fine.

    Excellent video John! I think that most skilled hobbyists could perform this repair. A few words of caution, however: when you feed the new battery cables, they are typically "live" and have the potential of damaging the circuit or components if they happen to touch any circuit area and make a connection prior to the exact points where they need to be soldered. It may be helpful to snip each new battery lead so that only the insulated wire is fed through, and then stripped just prior to soldering. Additionally, rosin left on the circuit board after soldering can cause problems: usually, 90% isopropyl alcohol and a cue-tip should be used on the soldering joint to remove any excess rosin that pools around the connection. The final job should be clean, shiny, and rosin-free. Finally, the original Li-Po battery is still potentially dangerous because the battery can still hold a residual charge. The leads should not be shorted, they should be snipped off, and the old battery disposed of properly in a recycling facility. A shorted or swelling Li-Po battery can explode and/or cause a surprisingly spectacular fire (see RUclips LiPo battery explosions for examples of what can go wrong).

      Thanks Jim! Excellent points here. I am in the process of making a short video dedicated to the soldering process and I will use your comment as the basis of the talking points. Great tutorial! Thank you so much for doing this! I just replaced the battery in my son's Cozmo and your directions helped tremendously. Found the battery on Amazon for $15, perfect fit and twice the capacity. The head is a little tricky but I found if you only remove 3 of the 4 screws, and leave in the lower left screw, it will hold that little plastic rod in place making it easier to go back together. I accidentally left out the counterweight the first time so I got to tear it apart twice! Also the trick with the arms is there is a little tab or clip that you can barely see but if you lift the arms all the way up becomes visible that you want to push in so it releases. I didn't quite see that in the video, they don't just pop off, you have to press in that little white tab, just in case others have the same question. Thanks again! Cozmo is up and running like new.

    Thanks for this, I got my Cozmo battery replaced. Yes it's a lot of steps, the battery is deep down at the bottom of the build pile. Once you get down there it's very easy to replace the battery. The hardest part of the whole mess was getting the head back together. I felt like I could use a 3rd hand. In the end the trick there is to get the screen in, then put the two halves of the head back together almost all the way, maybe even thread on of the screws in 2 turns, then clip the face plate and the speaker back in place.

    Thank you, John. This video is a huge help to me! Our Cozmo was down to about 8-10 minutes of runtime per charge. Replaced the battery and now our Cozmo has new life! I would caution everyone that the larger mah batteries are longer and that the biggest possible battery is not automatically best. We replaced with a 620mah and it rests against the front bottom sensor. Everything seems to work well, but it's a very tight fit. The 540s or 600s would likely be better overall fit but you can squeeze the 620 mah in there.

I did two swap outs back to back, and did find it easier to reassemble the second cozmo by removing the head screws only on his left side. • @paulreeder5241
    @paulreeder5241 3 года назад +1

    Firstly, allow me to explain the meaning of the 6 digit part number of the battery 503236. The first digit is the thickness of the battery, 50 = 5mm (60 = 6mm and so on. If the first number is, say, 55 then that would be 5.5mm). The second digit is the width, 32 = 32mm wide. The last digit is the length, 36 = 36mm long.
    I really can't understand how people think can they get that much more mah from a battery that is damn near the same size? It is simply not possible. It's the amount of chemicals inside the single cell "Package" (Size) that gives it the mah rating. Therefore, you MUST use a larger battery to get more mah, period. Your comparison is the same thickness, but a 2mm narrower and a 4mm longer battery. Actually only making it a total difference of 2mm larger. 2mm does not equate to almost twice the mah rating.The Chinese are notorious for their misleading and lying to people about their products. This is one of those times. Another example of this is, "You cannot fit two gallons of baby shit into a one gallon bucket".
    Another thing about it that might surprise you is, Cozmo's original battery lasted maybe 30 minutes, more or less. If you replace it with a 30% larger battery, you will get 9 minutes, more or less, longer. I know, right? 30% sounds like a lot, but it isn't really that much. So, when DDL tells you that the new Cozmo 2.0 will give you up to 30% longer runtime, now you know. The "up to" is because this is just an approximation. Due to the amount of chemicals not being equal in each battery. Also, Due to the location of the battery, it is only possible for a certain size battery to fit. So, this means that a new battery that will give you 30% longer runtime, is the largest battery that will fit in the allocated space. i'm sure they would have made it an even larger battery, giving you even more runtime, but it is more than likely because Cozmo would get a lot hotter, that they didn't even consider it.
    So, in conclusion, the chances are that this so-called 600 mah battery is probably twice the price. But not twice the runtime. Now, if you could fit 2 batteries connected in parallel, you would get twice the runtime, common sense and logic dictates this. This also proves that you cannot get twice as many mah from approximately the same size single cell battery. Just trying to help people that really don't understand how Li-Po batteries work.

    I’ve been confirmed by anki (ex)technician that the spring into the head is usueless for any Cozmo of the latest gen, the one with the button on the back. It is tricky to put it back, if your Cozmo has a button just leave it out.

    I followed the video and replaced the battery, but the Cozmo shows "cozmo wants to be put down" now and the head is keep moving up and down while the lift never moved. Do you know which sensor maybe damaged during I replacing the battery? When assembly the cozmo back, do I need calibrate head and lift position?

      Do you have a wifi mesh system or signal booster attached to your router? strong wifi signals on the 2.4GHz channel can overpower Cozmo's aerial and cause it to shut down (which show the same symptoms as a bad battery)

    • @jml1282
      @jml1282 3 года назад

      Thanks so much for this tip but we don’t have a signal booster. 😕 He did last a lot longer when we tried him again earlier, do you have any other reasons why the battery would die so much sooner than is estimated? (He has been on charge for at least 1 hour and also you are one of the best repair youtubers I’ve EVER watched as you make very detailed tutorials and whenever something is wrong with our cozmo, we can always come over to your channel and you have a tutorial on how to fix it! You’re an absolute legend and there is no reason why you should have dislikes on any of your videos as they are a ‘live saver for our little cozmo!’ 😄😄😄😄

    Regarding the rubber sticker on the battery, how necessary would it be to transfer over to the new battery from the old one as I have found others say it serves as a thermal insulator between the motherboard contacts under the battery and the battery itself and if so what issues could arise from this?

    • @TheJohnJudge
      @TheJohnJudge  Год назад +1

      I think it predominantly prevents any components on the motherboard from piercing the battery sleeve (they’re quite sharp). Also I guess it stops the battery sleeve accidentally shorting any components because it does rest on top of them.

    Hey there, just found your Video AFTER i replaced the battery by my own xD (used an 620mAh from Amazon).
    Question: Cozmo is again up and running, so far its fine.
    The Problem: He dont know when the battery is low and just turns off after an hour or so being on his ride.
    When he is charging the 3 LEDs jump after a hour or so just from 1 LED to 3 LEDs --> Full.
    Is there a way to "learn" on the new Battery or should it work just out of the box? Didnt Factory reset Cozmo - maybe thats the fault?
    Best regards from Germany,
    Marti

    Hello! I have attempted this repair myself, but struggled somewhat with the soldering. The battery connected to the robot, however I am not able to charge the battery on the the stand. It shows charging but never fully charges and just times out. Played with the robot for an afternoon with the charge the battery arrived with, but not getting any additional charge. Is this from the soldering or possibly not reassembling correctly? Can you give me any advice? Thank you.
