Many thanks from the great great grandson of John O’Mahony here in the U.S. from what I know, John was a colonel in the civil war, ran a Gaelic newspaper in NY and published a translation of the history of Ireland. Interesting person. I might be wrong but as I understand he gave the Fenians their name.
Great video Davy. I don’t remember them covering this in History class when I was at Kieran’s 😂, god forbid they might have in-stilled national pride in the students that attended there…. Then again, I might have been mitching the day they were teaching about him. Like most Irish people I’ve learned and continue to learn more about our history reading books outside the national school curriculum and watching videos such as the this. Keep up the good work 👍.
My great great grandfather was part of The Fenian Brotherhood. John James Clancey. He raised 13 children, along with my grandfather, who lost his parents at a young age. He worked into his 90’s.
"A missing piece of the puzzle" My great great grandfather was the captain of the state ship Catalpa which gave chase to Fenian Irish political prisoner's aboard a whaling ship in what was the first jail break recorded in Western Australia from the Round House prison, a converted whaling station and first building built in the colony, he was reprimanded for not catching the whaling ship and blowing it out of the waters, as his orders stated in what was a far superior and cannon armed vessel to that of the U.S whaler, in recent years letter's have emerged between the captain of Catalpa and the Fenians and revealed a lifelong friendship between the two. ( My Irish ancestry can be traced back on both sides of the family over 400 years to County Clare where records end due to fires) Kim Torpy nee Congdon 💫🙏💞
Thank you for making this video. I appreciate learning the lessons of the past. I am an interested " historian" of sorts, who's been working on never before read, stash of Fenian Brotherhood letters for the past 3 years. I have Just finished transcribing all 144 of them. I would like to go back through and see if I can not find anything that matches the dates you mentioned. I have letters from him, and I have an according of him in America. Are you familiar with the great Irish fair? It was one of the most successes of it's time, and raised over 50,000.00 dollars. James Stephens worked along side the Deputy Chief (Henry O'Clarence McCarthy) of the FB in America. I look forward to anymore history you have to share from this era.
I used to get bothered that all the “ movements “ in Irish history ended in failure but then I discovered that all the main players were Freemason agents working for the crown which had created the movements in the first place.
@@genevievedolan1288Not really. They failed because they constantly did not have popular support. 1798 for example was primarily a bunch of presbyterians with a dubious view of Catholicism whilst the British government was willing to concede Catholic Emancipation with Union. Most of them were led by protestants which did not make it exactly popular.
@@johnnotrealname8168 yes, it is very complicated, more than my comment suggested, mostly I just wanted to get away from the sometimes thinly veiled attitude that Irish rebellions were almost comic if not completely pathetic in their constant failings. After all the republic exists.
Just a comment on why Irishmen in the US got involved with the civil war here. At the 5:40 mark you mentioned a couple of theories. The actual fact is that the Confederacy instituted the draft in 1862, followed by the Union in 1863. The Irish in NYC engaged in one of the biggest riots in the city's history. They did this because, as usual, the more wealthy families could purchase a proxy to go in their stead. After the war, Tammany Hall turned into one of the most corrupt governments in NY. Google Boss Tweed for that info. I love your videos by the way❤
The fenian raids into canada are what lead to Canadian confederation. Also The wreck of the lady elgin is a really interesting story from this time period.
Oh! William smith Obrien….. I have seen the name on records called the William smith Obrien appeal? The names are supporters I believe and contributing $$. Is it same to assume that someone who contributed would be a supporter of the IRB? Thanks. Asking because I have family members mentioned

The recent surge in the U.S. housing market, marked by home builders liquidating their stock and a significant increase in new homes for sale, indicates a potential shift in market dynamics. This situation, highlighted by a 12.2% drop in new home sales and a decrease in median sales prices to $434,700, coupled with a substantial rise in housing inventory, suggests a possible cooling off in the real estate market. This development could impact financial investments in real estate, presenting both opportunities and risks, and underscores the importance of diversification, such as considering cryptocurrencies, which offer liquidity and a different risk profile compared to traditional markets like real estate...Amidst this, the insights of a knowledgeable guide like that of Evelyn Infurna can be crucial. Davy, I know this sounds crazy but given Stephens' actions over the years, do you think there's any possibility he was a plant all along? Heading up a rebel group in 1858 after the failure of the 1848 one, that outs those in the population who would want to join who have just watched over a million of their own people starve to death and at least another 2 million flee for survival. The British always had to keep an eye out for Irish rebellions and after The Great Hunger, they must have been well aware of the heightened danger against them that was triggered on a large scale amongst the Irish population and possibly, preemptively, come up with ways to thwart a future rebellion. Either by creating an organization themselves, or infiltrating a real one, IRB, from the start, so they can control it? Given Stephens always managed to escape capture, except the one time he spent two weeks in jail before being broken out, and his actions in the U.S., promising year after year a rebellion that never happens, under his watch anyway, to eventually just go home? Why lie about going back to Ireland then stay in New York. Was he there to control the movement and string it along with the end result that the timing for a rising just was never the right time? I don't know. So much of it doesn't make any sense and the British had spies in Ireland and America to watch the Irish in both countries and infiltrate the Fenians in America to thwart the movement after the famine. My g-g-grandfather was IRB, my grandmother's grandfather. She talked about him. He was involved in the 1867 Fenian Rising in Limerick, was arrested, charged with treason-felony, and deported to America, not allowed to return. He settled in Chicago. I found the record of his arrest in Irish records, I have a photocopy of the written log book of his arrest. Under the column that says "Specific crime charged with", it is written, "Levying war against the Queen and attacking Ardagh Barracks".
@@kevinluby4783 No. My g-g-grandfather was not a Crown plant. He was arrested, charged, convicted and deported. He was only 19 and nowhere near the leadership of the movement. He lost his country, everything he knew, and never saw his parents again. And what is your problem exactly? I was looking at it from an objective, intellectual, historic, perspective. How do you know Stephens wasn't? He may not have been but given his actions and inactions, some of them inexplicable, it is certainly worth asking. Wouldn't you want to know either way? You can't defeat your enemy if you think they can never get one over on you. The Brits have done this through the centuries, and unfortunately quite effectively. I was asking the question based on Stephens' actions as a leader and the actions of British Intelligence at that same time in history, in Canada and inside the U.S., planting British spies inside the IRB-Fenian movement. Stephens obviously may not have been, but to never ask the question given his actions and repeated failure to launch the rising he himself called for seems a bit neglectful. There are many examples but have you never hear of Henri Le Caron, a French, Fenian Republican high up in the organization, Clan na Gael, inside the U.S., the sister organization to the IRB? He was in it for 25 years, connected to the dynamite campaign in London that was organized out of Chicago in the 1880's. One day Le Caron showed up in London in 1889 to testify in the Parnell Commission against Charles Stewart Parnell that Parnell knew of the campaign of violence against Britain. Oh and his name wasn't really Henri Le Caron. It was Thomas Miller Beach, a British spy who had been under cover spying for British Intelligence for over 25 years. He initially entered the U.S. from France in 1861 during the U.S. Civil War under his fake name and fake nationality to spy for the Brits against the U.S.. Great Britain took the side of the Confederacy, the South, in the hopes the Confederates would win and the British could break up the United States republic, a republic that did not serve British imperialist interests. It was also British spies inside the U.S. govt. that maneuvered and manipulated the U.S. into WW1, (Colonel House, top advisor to Pres. Woodrow Wilson, and longtime British spy) and WW2 for British interests which were the total opposite of American, isolationist, anti-imperialist, anti-British, anti-foreign intervention interests. And my U.S. govt. has been doing the bidding of the British corporate imperialist, world police project, ever since the end of WW2. That is the total opposite of what my county was founded on and for and against our American interests. But it certainly has served theirs. Pardon me for looking at how they operate and where they have been successful in thwarting both of our republics. But if you don't investigate where things have gone wrong and who and how and why, you never get to the other side. Don't let blind emotion override thoughtful, intellectual, patriotism.
Lordy, they pulled a Pearl Harbor but on Canada. I'd say they should've done what the chinese did and hide in the mountains instead and resupply/gather more men, buuut given how they were too blood thirsty for english blood...probably wouldnt have worked so well.

Long live the Fenians
Lordy, they pulled a Pearl Harbor but on Canada. I'd say they should've done what the chinese did and hide in the mountains instead and resupply/gather more men, buuut given how they were too blood thirsty for english blood...probably wouldnt have worked so well.
I refuse to Apologise for my Gaelic Heritage even if it means my death
