Chelsea Chihuahua Tutorial - Tricky nail Cutting

  • Video tutorial to help cut the nails of a chihuahua who is both scared and stubborn. It took us 15mins to cut all four paws however we recommend you do little and often. One or two nails a day to help build confidence for both you and your dog. Do not give your dog to the groomers or vet to clip their nails, it will be very stressful for your dog. Better to do it at home in a calm environment. Good luck and feedback is welcome ❤️🐶

    My dog is way, way worse. I put her in a towel like a burrito and she squeals like she's being brutally murdered as soon as she sees the clippers or even a paper towel. She pees and poos on me or the vet when getting her nails clipped. She howls and bites and that's after a calming pet, play time and steak bites as a reward. I now have to drive her out to the middle of nowhere so my neighbors don't think I'm killing her when I clip her nails. I used to be a professional dog groomer. I've never once cut her nails too short. This dog on the video is an angel by comparison.

    An assistant helps greatly. I am always there when the nails are clipped and the assistant holds while the vet clips. Over in less than 2 min and a lot less of an ordeal for the dog.

    There was a quick fix for mine. They have to release the fear. One of my Chis screamed like he was dying when you even got near him with clippers.... even almost choked to death at a vet, trying to get away in a harness. Finally I just had someone hold him and let him exhaust himself completely (he actually released his anal glands on my mom lol oops) but after he was exhausted I was able to clip while she held him and he realized it wasn’t actually hurting him. Now he just comes to me when it’s time. He just had to release all that fear. He doesn’t love it but he rarely struggles and the ear-piercing screams are no more.

    If only I was as lucky as you. All she seems to do is struggle a little. My little chihuahua goes full psycho when he gets upset. He definitely has fear aggression and I couldn't even do this if I tried... he would draw blood
    Whats more, the more you try to persist the more he starts to anticipate it, to the point where he is then actively looking for it coming and reacts in advance

  • @Choppini
    @Choppini 4 года назад +4

    wow... I don't really know how lucky I can consider myself. Now I love my little one even more, since I see how other dogs struggle. Doing my Chiwi's nails for the 6th year now, with a big toenail cutter. I did not want to have her injured (like my former dog - once somebody let him jump off the table that he was limping for weeks, at another salon he had deep cuts between his paws, another time 2 nails injured/bloody - cut WAY too short, and so on), many groomers don't even take dogs this size for toenails. Honestly, she does not like having it done, but she lets me do it, with the occasional 'paw-hiding-attempt'. Have to have her first on my lap, and then get the clipper, my eye glasses, and the treats, or she hides in her 'house' (her sacred place, where I would never drag her out). Before we start, the bag with the tiny cat treats is right in front of her, she gets many kisses while I'm clipping, and after each pawsie she gets one 'Temptations Seafood Medley'. She gets them only when we do the clipping, and I know she is crazy about these treats. So, I would say, within 5 minutes or so, we are done. Then there is one special liver treat "for the road", and lots of praise and kisses, and she is bouncing around because I am squeaking loudly: 'Mama is SO proud of you, Putzi!!!'. Unfortunately, three weeks ago, I did not sit right in front of the window, where I can see how far to cut.....and...I cut her.... No blood came, but she was HORRIFIED, the sound that came out of her!!!!! Like she would be slaughtered! I felt so bad, but I guess she'll overcome that shock. It's already necessary, I waited as long as possible, but I can see that the nails are too long. AFter the cutting she is usually even more energetic than before, because of the shorter nails. They grow so fast, I should actually cut them every week. Love your video. Edit: we just did it! 6 minutes, clocked. There was a lot of shaking for the first 2 minutes, but now she trusts her mama again. haha.

    I sit on the couch with a throw pillow on my lap. I sit my dog on the pillow and lean her back against my chest to cut her nails. That's the best way I have found to cut a small dogs nails. If the dog is really small I do it on a bed sitting up with my knees bent.

    The visual seems to be a common problem regardless of the dog. When they see what is happening, they tend to freak. Also, the clipping sound seems to be disconcerting. Therefore it seems shielding vision and noise reduction can greatly alleviate much of the fight. I also, like the wrapping technique mentioned below by Baby Blue.

  • @rbojorq
    @rbojorq 5 лет назад +1

    The inherent problem with this video is that the paws need to remain at a natural angle. if you notice, the paws are being slightly twisted outward, putting pressure on the dogs joints. Not a slam on the person making the video because they are trying to encourage owners to do this, but we found that as soon as you put a little focus on keeping the paws straight, your dog with some repetition, will allow you to cut their nails. It's a mistake we all make but one is easily overlooked.

    Please take the annoying music off. Terrific coaxing and reassuring but if you fast forward, how on earth can anyone see how long the nail is, or the quik. It would be so much more beneficial to hear your voice correcting or reassuring her. You ripped yourself off. This could have been a great video. Sorry but.........dayum..........................OK, so I got to the end. Your subtitles are great. Just would rather have been taught by you as you went along. Your video could have been the best on youtube. Thank you, just keep it real - lose the shitty music, speak to your audience so we can hear the tone of what you are saying. Chihuahua Power to you.

It took me a few days to settle him to get a sweater on and he likes it when it's on because he knows we are going for a walk so I'll figure out something special for when he gets his nails done. Thanks.

    That is so rude to assume people who have the vet or groomer clip the nails are "lazy."

      I definitely agree, I'm afraid to cut my bowsers nails because I heard that the nails can bleed, and I don't know how short to cut them

    Other method is make them run around on stone pavement or cement and those nails will go away by themselves

    I would do one nail, then a couple of hours later do another one or two, in a couple of days they were done, my chihuahua was very fussy, this one is fussy but not as bad as mine.
