    And as we see, Clay was going to be messed up as an adult, no matter what. He was coddled by his mother to unhealthy degrees. And his father shaped his understanding of how “love” shown.

  • @filipvadas7602
    @filipvadas7602 9 месяцев назад +124

    And here we have it. The foundation that helped turn Clay into what he is:
    1. It really shows how incredibly isolated and ignorant the people of Morelton are that Clay's mother literally didn't know that you shouldn't smoke, drink and be *minimally* phisically active while pregnant. Her subsequent babying of Clay basically stunted him emotionally.
    2. His need to have the attention of a parental figure, which is what caused him to antagonise his father, turned him into a mess once his father realised that hitting Clay was having the opposite effect.
    3. "Clay did this to himself" is the perfect way to sum up his character and its why this backstory is so important. Clay knows that it was his dumb decision that resulted in his mother's death and his father despising him.
    Its basically the crux of his self-hate

    This episode shows clay is also the cause and effect because of his parents bad parenting. Clay suffers from the sins of the mother as well, the drinking and smoking habits. Of course later on without bloberta in his life he was fine but they somehow managed to get to you one way or another. Clay knows he’s responsible for his mothers death. His father just didn’t know how to be a good father. Cause he didn’t get the chance to be one over and over. It also explains his oedipus complex. Clay is the most broken man in moralton. 30% of it is not even his fault, but it was enough to plant the seeds of chaos into his life.

    • @TC-th1ey

After getting beaten half to death by Orel is the only time he doesn’t hit him as a punishment, and Orels response of assuming it’s because clay is giving up on him is so heartbreaking and the closest we get to see clay actually be a good parent. The way you can clearly see the moment it clicks for Clays father too, that he picks up “oh he wants this” and then leaves. And Orel disappointing clay on purpose by denying him violence in claiming he didn’t shoot the bear. Clay never hitting shapey for his behavior the way he does Orel because Orel is actually his. I believe it was the emotional toll of Clay's mom's miscarriages that pushed her farther into bad habits (drinking and smoking) and this also put stress on Clay's dad, who had to have been aware of what was happening, and it slowly pushed them further and further apart, and when Clay was born his mom spoiled and coddled him, and Clay's dad's disapproval of this led to the straining his relationship with Clay (and it was sealed with his mother's death) and further kicked the dead horse of Clay's parents' relationship.

    Clay only did what he did because his mother coddled him to a point where either he was loved or he wasn't. If the focus wasn't on him or if she showed love to someone else, then he isn't loved. Once they started going back over pictures of previous siblings, he realized his Mom loved those kids as well. And as I just mentioned, if she shows love to someone else, Clay takes that as him not being loved so he goes to the extreme to get that love back. However, after that many miscarriages, I believe any mother would coddle their only living child to that degree. Then again, she caused the miscarriages herself by smoking and drinking. This is one of the episodes that show life is just fucked up in Moralton, every action, no matter how small or long ago, has effects on the town and its people to the present

    You are looking at Clay through the eyes of an adult. Clay was a child who was not only coddled to the point of developmental atrophy but also came to associate love with physical abuse. However, the dagger is his father giving up on him all together. That is the trifecta of creating a toxic character like Clay. Im not say Clay shouldn't be responsible for the horrible things he has said and done but there is no question the his parents are to blame for him become who he is. His wife will be the dagger that destroys Clay entirely. Honestly, Clay never stood a chance. That is too much trauma for most people to push through. This is what makes Orel so amazing cuz dispite his family, and that town, Orel turned out wonderful.

    This is what I feel the show was perfect at, it never tried to "excuse" clays actions with this backstory, just give you the understanding of how someone this heavily irresponsible could come to be and between this episode and the last, gives a better insight to why him and bloberta haven't split, bloberta played off the same kinda dynamic he had with his mother for long enough to make clay believe he needed her, while simultaneously spreading his own toxic breed of abusive love he got from his father's reaction

    • @gasousnebule7932
      @gasousnebule7932 9 месяцев назад

      It's also likely the swap from a overbearing, overprotective style of parenting from his irresponsible mom followed by the borderline nonexistent parenting from his father made him never learn proper responsibility

    I was supposed to have a sibling too, much love to all mothers and parents ❤
    Also, clay sought out for attention and his father hitting him made him feel like he cared enough to do so

    We learn more of how Clay becomes Clay in the true finale Before Oral. This is just the stepping stones.
    Also Clay getting hit by his father is Clays idea of being shown love, being worth it. Which is why Clay hits Oral. It's Clays way of showing his love to his son.

    the reason season 3 has a lot of flashbacks is because season 4 & 5 were meant to focus on the people and the show would be renamed Moralton but they got cancelled so they used some of the season 4 & 5 plotlines. season 3 was meant to have Orel questions god and become emo and lead into becoming less about Orel and more about the town

    I have a little sibling in Heaven as well. I was young when it happened and my dad had to explain in a way that I could understand. Fortunately my mother never did anything that Angela did and it was just…something that happened. I was FURIOUS when I saw that she was so careless with herself and her unborn children.

    So Clay internalized being hit as being worth the attention and an act of showing love. This is why he only spanks Orel and not shapey or block. This even shows up later in a scene I won't spoil with Clay wanting people to hit him
