Arabic and the Western Arabic.
The decimal positional system was invented in India about 500 AD, but it remained unknown for the indian people except some priests & few scholars inside the temples, so it was not used in everyday life. It was a secret for the elite, untill the Islamic civilization adopted it and refined it to be used in everyday life . There are two main versions of numerals adopted by the Islamic civilization : Eastern Arabic numerals and Westernn Arabic numerals. The Western Arabic numerals are now called Arabic or Hindu-Arabic numerals and they have been always used in Tunisia , Algeria and Morroco since 1000 years.

I can't help but notice the modern numeral forms look very similar to Hindu numerals and nothing like Arabic numerals.

Not completely true. You can find the modern vestiges of these ancient numerals in the number 7where some Europeans/Germans put a slash through the downstroke of the 7. Some people think that is to clarify it from a two, but is actually a leftover from the ancient 7 as presented in this video.

There is only one 'number six' but many, many ways of representing it. Since six is an abstract concept. You cannot hold the number six in your hands because it is only a thought.
It is the same with words: "ball" is a symbol for a round spherical object made of rubber that bounces. But you can actually hold a ball in your hand.
We use symbols to represent many things, but numbers are only in our head or a thought or an idea.

The middle eastern Muslims derived their numerals (٠١٢٣٤٥٦٧٨٩) from the Hindus, then North African Muslims derived the current numerals (0123456789) from the middle easterners ones, then the Europeans took the North African numerals and called them Arabic Numerals by mistake. The two Eurpeans guys who introduced the North African Numerals were Fibonacci and Gerbert d'Aurillac aka Pope Syslvester II. They respectively studied in North Africa and Islamic Spain.
