that point u made about social media not being a good source of inspiration bc it's algorithms feeding u what u know u already like is mind blowing for me, like no wonder i feel like all my ideas are boring and i'm in the same loop day after day, i'm not giving my brain anything interesting to think about !! it's so obvious when it's laid out like that but social media is so ingrained in the everyday that it didn't even occur to me to think about it like that
How I'm going to combat this is switch my ig to the following feed, use my subscription feed on yt, actively search for inspiration out of the home feed like online art blogs, irl galleries, books etc :-)
so true. i feel this everytime i visit an actual museum and art galleries or operas and theaters. its such a genuine source for inspiration! and it does't make me feel bad about myself
i definitely feel like my brain is clearer and happier on days when i’m doing chores or walking without music, podcast or videos. gives it some space to just be
One of my favorite stay-at-home artist dates is watching a biography (Klimt, Jim Henson, Kate Bush, etc) or videos of people who are legends in their field (drummers, skateboarders etc). There's something about watching the creative process of a person who is so different from me that I find super recharging and inspirational:)
SO TRUE that the inner artist might just want to see a trashy movie. I just had this realization with my own artist dates. Super excited to take myself on a low brow date next week lol
I keep notebooks to write in all over my house, including the bathroom. I also have noticed how much I love being outside. As an artist, it can get stifling to be inside too much. Nowadays, I take most of my breaks outside along with short bus trips to the sea. It helps calm the stresses of working and overthinking so much. I really am paying attention to how everything including food affects my brain. Again, outside breaks are wonderful. Thanks for your videos!!! USA
So interesting that this book, published 30+ years ago has boomed in popularity and interest over only a couple of years, proving the "way." To find a way that works for you, pulling from and re-filling your inner well when you make, write, draw, paint, sculpt. 🥰
I'm almost 40 and I have seen this book popularity very consistent over the years, it's call "the artists bible" for a reason ;). Oc I have it and love it! I gave many of this as gifts to friends
Love your insight on homogeneity from the algorithm! Having finished the Artist’s Way earlier this year, I can say that the best creative replenishment has always come from outside the algorithm for me: simple artist dates like reading and drinking a hot chocolate at the local library, to going on a walk and seeing what I notice. Lately, attending community events like joining a book club and local workshops has been excellent for literally booking in future fun! It makes such a difference in my work and inspiration
Synchronicity is a wonderful thing - even if served by the algorithm! I am about to move to another house for six weeks to look after an elderly dog, and in gathering what to take, pulled my Artist's Way off the bookshelf. I bought it when it was first published (I am old!) and didn't get far, as I couldn't give myself permission to think of myself as artistic. Many years and too much work and a big life crisis later, I am looking for inspiration for the future and here are you and here is the book. I haven't watched any of your videos before but was killing time to avoid packing and RUclips put this video in my way. In someone else's house you can't just bury yourself in your tax return or rearranging and housework and so on when not at work, and I know I need things to "fill" time, so am going to make it creative things to feed my poor shrunken soul. I look forward to hearing how you go with your journey and I with mine. Thank you
I love the artists way it’s a great book … I had never really connected the dots of the algorithm serving you what you are familiar & comfortable with & for looking for inspiration elsewhere.. it was very insightful thank you x
I love journaling down emotions and I am trying to take care of my own emotions more often. It is all about being kinder to myself, and learning to accept the negatives (improve if possible) and focusing on the positives.
Oh my goodness! I just started this myself last week! On week 2! This is the second time I've started it. The first time I ran into some very stubborn blocks that I gave up. This time I'm coming at it from a place of wanting freedom. I was doing some deep digging on self-sabotage and in realizing the roots of it, I knew this book and course would help. The weekly tasks have been surprising in what connections they're revealing. I do HEAPS of journaling on a regular basis, so I decided to make my morning pages a doodling exercise. I bought markers and a sketchbook just for it. My reminder when I'm doodling is the kids I work with at church. They grab paper and crayons and just go. No judgement, no hesitation. It's so hard to draw like that as an adult!
i love when you take us to your studio, but i EXTRA love the little moments you show us of your home-- it's so cozy and loving, and I just wanted to say thanks for having us over!
This is wild, I’ve been going through this, as a personal experience without ever reading this book… I started writing in the mornings to process unexplained depression I was feeling, and now a month later, writing in the morning has become a must-have exploration of my brain- and I literally talk to my inner child 🤯 like I’m using that time to acknowledge myself… it’s so crazy how close my experience has been to at least the into to this book. I think I need this book
Yeah, I’m super amazed, I have to say again- it’s crazy to see something you learn about yourself, and to find it out in the world helping others. Thanks for making this episode matey, super appreciated
I NEEDED THIS SO MUCHHH!!!😢 Ive literally had this book and the workbook for like 4 years and always say I am going to start it. I am feeling stuck creatively and this video came up. Thanks! I will start it today.
I did not even know it was a thing, but I unintentionally used to go on 'artist's dates' all the time before I became a mom. 😢 but also 😊 because I am happy I rediscover this in a new way this season of my. Thank you Sha'an.
I finally completed The Artist Way earlier this year. It was an insightful journey. I learned I had a lot of distractions holding me back. Such as, ‘noise makers’ and yes, social media wasn’t helping. I removed apps from my phone and iPad. I’ve been happier without the distractions and it’s helped me create again. By the way, can you list what microphone you use? It looks cute.
I love that you are doing this book! I did it and created 3 videos on it (artist dates, morning pages, and about the book). It's such an amazing creative book to read and what you learn from it is so valuable! When I was doing my morning pages I kept writing about wanting to start a YT channel and I did! It's been the best thing for me and I'm so glad I did this course. I'm so excited for you to do this too!
Such a sweet video, love the way you filmed this! I have had the artists way on my shelf for months and now I am re-inspired to actually get on with it. Thank you!
Love your views on the algorithm and how to do your own research away from this. I've had the Artists Way in my wish list for a while so might need to get it. BTW I always feel happier and more relaxed and creative after I watch your vids.
i had no idea this book existed but i think your video found me at the perfect time because that's exactly what i need at this time in my artistic path. thank you for sharing with us and i wish you luck on your journey 🧡
LOVED the first pair of strappy shoes you put on before you put on your socks and other shoes! Please let me know what kind they are💖 Happy that the algorithm brought me to your channel! All the best to you on your Artist’s Way journey!! ~kari 🦊 West Coast Canada
mm i agree wrt to algorithms serving you what you already know. it is indeed a good idea to find it in the unpredictability of our everyday world. i think it's good to expose yourself to new things in general, get out of your comfort zone a little. i found a way to find inspo there though - by looking at fanart. sure, the media you're searching fanart for will influence the kind of art you see e.g. if you're searching for an animated children's show like Hilda, you'll probably find more cutesy art. but i've had some luck with finding new artists and styles i never thought i'd like which i absolutely love now. and i guess instagram isn't the place for this but on twitter (or tumblr), having those artists retweet art from other artists they like expands the possibilities. unless that artist only engages with art similar to them
loved this video and hearing your thoughts on inspiration and the algorithm! i have a copy of TAW on my shelf but i've never properly gone through it, taking this as a sign :)
I LOVE The Artist Way! It was actually the book that got me back into creating after my dad died. Grief does such a weird thing to your creativity. It really helped get me out of my rut. I was actually thinking about starting it again just for fun. I’ll take this as a sign to start again lol. I wish you all the best on your artist way journey! I hope it lights you up as much as it did for me. 💜 The intro reminds me of a quote (I first heard it on Ted Lasso, great show) “Be curious, not judgmental.” - Walt Whitman (Same energy of your gallery exploration)
I am about to start my last week of the artists way (first read) and am currently on maternity leave so I haven’t been able to commit to artists dates because I’m never alone 😂 but I’m excited to do it again already because I’ve found it very beneficial. I’ve realised it’s about time I become less scared of doing things I’ve always wanted to do, through fear of failure or not doing something perfectly first time. I want to start a RUclips channel! Putting that out there and saying out loud is scary but makes it feel more achievable 😅
woah this is cool. I am not an "artist" per se, I do some hobby stuff here and there, but my primary focus at the moment is writing my PhD proposal and BOy its hard for me sometimes in the exact same way you describe your roadblocks.. I'm thinking of this book because honestly so much of this feels like it could apply to my efforts to write!
Instant follow! My therapist recommended the artist's way to me 8!years ago and it changed my life. Also, where is that blaser from? I love your style!
I always look for inspiration from books and movies I think IG for my just to follow people I want to know more about them and their work I hope you have a lovely journey with the artist's way I don’t know when I will be able to read it I have known about the book since 2017 and still have not begun reading it Humming along with the end of the video music 🎶
Oh I need selfcare badly now. Also I note IG feed has been overflooded with commercials and people selling stuff. But I do wait for Peachtober that's the time where I look forward to. Are we still doing peachtober and will we have prompts earlier?
Sure will! Potentially end of the first week of Sept :-) i have yet to put together the list but once i finish up deadlines wednesday i'll hop straight onto it :-)
I got about 4 weeks into the artists way before I had to hit pause 😮 you video is inspiring to jump back into the process 🥳🥸 my favorite artist date I took myself on was a long bus ride to an art supply to pick out a new sketchbook 😊
I really liked this video! I've been intersted in doing the artists way for a while now, so this was a cool insight :) One small thing (that maybe is just me) but I find the audio when you use the tiny mic quite sharp and scratchy to listen to, so I watched on mute with captions instead.
@@furrylittlepeach it's like the S sounds are very loud! They're not as bad in the kitchen part or the voiceover at the end, so it might just be to do with how close you hold it or the direction it points or something??
Yes. that is a great read...I am sharing her other book "Letters X,",, (is. a good reader) with my undergrads for them and ME! Love rereading both books and having my undergrads write their thoughts about the (second) reading... Agree, "PINTEREST"...I looked at it a few times NOW they have sent me damn Things about what THEY THINK I am interested in... STOP sending me stuff!! ...I think I'll unsubscribe as "PINTEREST" doesn't seem to be listening.....Enjoy your dates... I always do...Enjoy!! 🥰

Going to the ikea canteen and doodling people eating!

My well is definitely depleted. This came at the perfect time. Hoping to get the book soon. Thanks for this, Sha'an.
I started the artists way a little bit but definitely need to set aside some time and work through it since it seems so helpful 🥰
I NEEDED THIS SO MUCHHH!!!😢 Ive literally had this book and the workbook for like 4 years and always say I am going to start it. I am feeling stuck creatively and this video came up. Thanks! I will start it today.
Just woke up, decided to draw with a video playing in the background and you came through :) Thank you from the Netherlands !
You've inspired me! I'm gonna start the artists way again and hopefully stick with it!

I used to watch you back in high school and rediscovered your page🥹 as an artist and overall creative you’ve always been so inspiring!!
Cute!!!
oh my goodness please do more video like this I love this you are my inner child love you!!!!
Subbed for this. I’ve been stuck in an artists block for over 10 years.
I've paused the artists way for my annual peachtober but will resume and share stuff about it after october ends

Yup! I used to edit on my macbook for maaaaaany years too
There's so many Artists way books on amazon. Which one is it?
It's just "The artist's way: a spiritual path to higher creativity", by Julia Cameron. It's had a few editions, any of them are fine.
Hey girly! 👋🏼🌈🍄🌼
