Hi, I'm from South Africa. I love watching your tutorials and recently subscribed. I've studied and worked in the Performing Arts my whole life, but I always heard this inner whisper to try the Visual Arts. Unfortunately I could barely draw a stickman. I started with charcoal pencils and yesterday I drew my very first birds. So this tutorial has now inspired me to try with pastels. Hummingbirds come into our garden. They look just like little living, shimmering gemstones. Thank you for the beauty you bring into our lives and for showing us the way. You make it look so easy!
I love sparkle, and you added just the right amount on this tiny guy. Art teaches us to look, see and appreciate the beauty around us. Thank you for a sweet lesson. ❤️
Hi Susan, I love this little tutorial. Hummingbirds are my absolute favorite animal. I am a sucker for iridescent pastels. Its super cute and small. I love it! Thanks. Maria
@@art-alchemy thanks! I am totally fascinated with hummingbirds. They are not only fascinating from an engineering perspective, but their beauty is almost other worldly!
You never have to say please... I absolutely love birds, especially hummingbirds. The ones in South America are so tiny...! My BP runs about 120/72@68 when I watch these creations ;)
Wouldn't some pastel pencils be better for such a small creature? I noticed you did with a little sketching at first. I would love to see some videos with pastel pencils. Thank you, always a pleasure watching.
I happen to love working large, but I don’t really have the studio space. I’m in the process of building a new and larger studio so hopefully I can create more large pieces. 🤗💜🤗
Now this may sound like a silly question but hear me out 🤣 I’ve noticed sometimes, but not always, you start the lesson with a sketch and then follow up with pastels. I tend to find these lessons easier for me personally. But is there a name difference between starting a pastel painting with a sketch or not?
Hi @KimberlySelby-l3m, I never spray a fixative on a soft pastel painting since it always darkens the final image. To protect my final painting for shipping or storing, I place them in a clear plastic bag I get from www.clearbags.com/bags/flat/flap-tape/crystal-clear. I buy the bags a bit larger than standard sizes so I will have room for the painting and a piece of foamcore board cut to the size of the painting. Here is a video of my process:ruclips.net/video/4XD4SezFyBg/видео.html&t=209s
Dear Susan, Thank you so much for sharing your talent and your inspiration with us. It’s so generous of you. ❤ Just a tiny little bit of constructive criticism. I am a professional sound engineer and I want to point out to you that your high frequencies are too harsh. Your esses and tees are quite shrill and they are distorting somewhat. If you turned your high frequencies down and possibly the gain it would make your sound much more gentle for those of us with sensitive hearing. Digital audio can be very unforgiving. I mean no offence. I’m a big fan of your work! I’m just trying to contribute to your amazing, wonderful channel. ⭐️💐🌼🌿❤️💜💖
Wow, I appreciate that so much! I actually have a Shire microphone, but I haven’t really played around with fine-tuning things. I am definitely going to take your suggestions and apply them. I do know that sound quality is so important for successful videos. Thank you, thank you thank you

Thanks for that input, @herbalannie7707! I'll have to keep that in mind!
I love your work, do you ever work larger, I use pastels and wonder about doing larger pieces

That's great feedback Olivia. I do often like to start with a sketch even though i don't always. I'll keep that in mind with future lessons.
What do you to set the pastels so they don’t smear?
