There is another thing in this episode that few seem to notice, when Tsuruya comes to the club she asks Nagato where are the others and Nagato replies, later when Kyon comes she pretends not to know so that way Kyon can stay with her for a while, the subtlety of actions like these is nice.

    Marvelous observation!
Just to comment, this episode was written by Tanigawa, the author of the light novels. Disappearance the novel came out 2004 in Japan, and this episode`s script was done in 2006. So I think this was probably set up by Tanigawa.

I got the impression kyoani had big plans for the series or at least read the entire saga of books. You can see multiple scenes that reference the disappearance in the opening of the show namely: the computer screen that saves Kyon in the movie, a dagger that looks like it may have been the same dagger that was used in the climax of the movie, a book falling to the ground, and a scene where Yuki is standing in the snow.

I always thought the reason Kyon gave his coat to Nagato in that scene was bcuz he remembered seeing human Nagato feel the human experience of being cold, and so Kyon wanted to give a tribute to the deep down humanness Nagato wishes could be shown, recognized, and understood.

There are idiots who say this episode was a waste. But this was something that was perfect preamble to the disappearance . Yuki s small emotions that materialize, what the world looks feels to Yuki most of the time it really changes ones perspective the hustle that is haruthi and her eccentric activities , haruthi and kyon s interactions . This series is gold. And the movie is legend

I never thought about the rooftop scene referencing someday in the rain, amazing discovery!
Also I that scene is not the only thing KyoAni thought 4 years beforehand, the OP has scenes from the movie, watch the OP closely and you'll see them.

In SITR Kyon attributes it to neither Mikuru nor Yuki; he simply raises the question and, having noticed the maid dress, digresses about Mikuru changing. As for the connection to Disappearance, in the light novels, Kyon is neither on the rooftop nor giving her his coat. That scene takes place in the hospital room with Kyon in bed. That being said, the differences in the movie were by Kyoto Animation after SITR was written; however, since the episode was written by Tanigawa, I believe the altered Disappearance scene was in reaction (or a nod) to SITR rather than being planned in any way.

Dude, thanks for sharing this. I thought it was Yuki back in the day but didn't make the disappearance connection.

I'm glad someone else caught this. Such a beautiful episode. I have a theory about this scene too, though perhaps it's more of a head canon. On the famous rooftop scene it is (noncommittally) implied that Nagato had told Kyon about everything but erased his memory of it. I like to believe that is what happened when Kyon fell asleep here. I don't have much to back me up, but imo it feels right.

But the thing is after Kyon wakes up, it shows that mikuru got changed in that room and since koizumi was holding that reflector board he must’ve brought it back so the rest of the brigade did have a reason to come back to the room. I get where ur going with this but there were some bits u left out

1 slight problem with your observation. I know this is an old video, but I had to say it. basically, in 1:03 you can see that Mikuru's maid outfit isn't hung on the thingy, but after kyon awakes, it is there. This doesn't necessarily mean Mikuru was the one to put it there, but it leaves room for doubt..

It's been a long time since i read the book, but i clearly remember that the scene in the book was in the hospital and not on the roof. So there was probably no any coat. But Tanigawa rewritten it for the anime (and as people mentioned “some day in the rain” was also written by him). Tanigawa actually gives a lot of these kinda hits throughout the series. Like the dialogue between Kyon and Asakura in the elevator where she mentions his “old strange girlfriend” that she learned about from Kunikida. I guess he had all the story written (or thought out at least) from the start.

One thing I REALLY want(ed) to see in Season 3 would have been Sasaki's arrival in the storyline and what a curve ball that would have thrown into the mix!!

I wouldn't call Nagato an enemy. I'd consider Haruhi and/or Kyon the so called Villain Protagonist(s), especially becauso of what one of them or them both are doing to Nagato in the Endless Eight arc.

Wendee Lee voices both Haruhi and Lyn from Fire Emblem. Brave Lyn in Fire Emblem Heroes is famous for saying THE ENEMY over and over again. That's the joke at the end.
