We had heard there is a floating village just outside Bandar Seri Begawan where nearly 25,000 families lived. So when we asked around, we learnt that it is called Kampong Ayer (meaning Village on Water). So we took a small boat for BND 1 across the Brunei river from the Bandar Waterfront and reached the port of Kampung Ayer. We spent the next few hours walking around the village on the stilted pathways exploring the different neighbourhoods, seeing the houses, offices and even a fire station which is located on the river! It was actually pretty cool to see it. We also learnt that the Sultan of Brunei has built many new houses there, because the older ones either collapsed into the water or caught fire and burnt down. We later caught the public bus back to Gadong, to our hostel.
