The very first episode after the strike ends should be on why the strike happened, why it was the right thing to do, and why more working people need to unite in solidarity.
Preach !!!
Absolutely!
This is the best idea I've heard since the start of this strike. Wow. DO IT John Oliver.
I need more up vote power.
What strike
I didn't watch the last few episodes
I'm very glad John is in solidarity with the writers, we miss him but it's good and in line with his previous actions that he's not crossing the picket line!
John Oliver is a member of WGA and a WRITER on every episode

I was honestly just thinking "What happened to John?" I completely forgot that the stroke would be putting the show on hiatus. I miss the weekly deep dive into topics I'd not normally consider, but support the strike 100%
@@AIMakerJonasyeah man I want to learn about rocks again 😞…..but not if John and his writers aren’t fairly compensated for this big beautiful show!!!
@@thesinaclwon I'm all in for the statues, when it's acceptable to spend money on them again.
As much as I want John Oliver back on the air, writers need to be paid for the hard work that they do. It's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.
Not sure you understand what the phrase " hard work" means lol.
@@joelaisure2769 I take it you've never written a script, let alone multiple scripts before. Even with a team, meeting deadlines and working in a limited time frame can be mentally taxing.
@@joelaisure2769 if its not hard work then why dont you try doing what they do. im sure it'll be so easy for you
The work they do? you mean like rebooting TV shows and movies that should have been left alone? or hating the source material they sign up for to adapt? or shoving political messages down everyone's throat? or writing a script about a preestablished book or game and making it unrecognizable from the original? Most writers don't deserve a penny more
@@Hexxagone850 dude thats usually not the fault of the writers, its the fault of the executives that make the final decisions on this stuff. movies suck these days because theyre forcing writers to make media thats as bland, formula fitting, and mass appealing as possible in order to drive profits and not invest on creative risks that might flop at the box office. when profit is the sole motivator behind art, the art will always suck no matter what. the fact that writers dont get paid well is one of the leading ways that executives maximize their own profits, benefiting off the backs of creatives that they feel are easily replacable if they get too out of the box. if writers got paid what theyre actually worth, we would see a boom in creativity because writers would no longer feel as pressured to fit the formula just to keep their jobs.
Pay your writers fairly, HBO. I need them to maintain the shred of life & sanity that I’m clinging to.
+
I loved the picket sig outside HBO saying "HBO Max pays HBO Min" proof positive why you don't want writers mad at you. XD
And don't forget that they changed "HBO Max" to "Max" to bypass contracts so they could avoid paying the creators of their shows.
The writers deserve everything they are asking for given the quality of this show.
Facts.
To clarify: what @HardSkolas said. Not what Matthew said. Very emphatically NOT what Matthew said.
@@Matthew10950 What problem who you have with unions. If there is a thing you don't like It is usually not the writers fault they don't decide the way the overall story will go the just work on the specifics of the script.
@@wildblack1 Absolutely!
Also, what kind of an argument is that - people should not get to unionize, because they don't do stuff I agree with ALL the time? @Matthew10950, you do understand that this is for all the writers, including those of your favorite current series, don't you?
@@Matthew10950 I'm pretty sure it wasn't because of the union that you didn't agree with the executive decisions made in a particular series.
@@Matthew10950nah unless we talking about Police Unions Unions are a good thing that give workers better rights see the shit they are doing in Texas? Denying construction workers the right to water in the summer? That’s what happens when corporations kill unions
As much as I miss this show, I want fair payment for writers even more. Besides, every season John Oliver does something so expensively ridiculous and over-the-top that you can’t help but enjoy the shirt out of it. Imagine what the show will do after being on strike for months.
The should do a a segment on the writers strike bring attention to it. And why writers deserve better
@@kreigguardsman3355 How? They literally wouldn't be able to do it without crossing the picket line.

Solidarity forever.
You do know that John is a actual writer on the show as well
You know he supports them too right?
For the union makes us strong!
John is a part of the strike I thought.
He’s in the both the actors and writers union

@@placeholderdoe Its not up to the individual shows.
Man, I just looked if there's any news on the strike and apparently it's now day 52 and still nobody's really talking to each other (as in, the studios with the writers). I also seem to really hear absolutely nothing about the strike and have to actively search for the very sparse coverage, if I want to learn anything new. Maybe it's just me, but I feel the 2007/08 strike was a much bigger deal in its coverage. Maybe because Late Night shows and scripted shows were still a much bigger deal 15 years ago?
In any case, I hope this gets resolved soon and the studios meet the WGA's demands (which really aren't exactly outlandish).
Edit: for those wondering: the 2007/08 strike lasted 100 days.
@@blubbsblabbs2245 For real. And the writer strike of 07/08 took out some damn good shows too.
pay this writing crew and all the others what they deserve.
Hear, hear!!
they deserve shit, looking at how low movie and series quality is now full of liberal agenda trash i say writers don't deserve what they already get paid
Yes. Pay writers what they deserve. Everything for the writers of last week tonight and nothing for the writers of rings of power.

If most rich people had the integrity of John Oliver what a wonderful world it would be ❤
All. All rich people, and all normal people too. Why pull back at the last minute?
If most people had the body of John Oliver, society would collapse, but not before they chopped down all the trees!

Class collaboration is fascist. John Oliver cannot actually heal the inequities of your system, only move them around.
@@DDd-gm8uz Agreed, however this is solidarity. John isn't who pays so solidarity is best. John is a member of the WGA.
Damn, the writer strike finally impacted something I watch.

Not the ones that wrote season 8 of GoT though. They should give back their paycheckes.

This cuck's net worth 30 million dollars. Peasants don't know where the messaging to them is coming from. It's sad but good thing that writers went on strike and all these stupid shows stopped.
Could somebody please drive a dump-truck full of cash to wherever the writers are currently being kept and unload it at their feet? We need John Oliver back!!!
Fill multiple trucks with wads of Benjamins. They're lighter than coins, accepted easier than higher valued currency, and lesser valued currency isn't enough.
HBO could, but then they'd have one less dump truck full of cash, and that's not in the business plan.
God yes please. Its been nearly 2 months and I'm losing the plot..
They couldn't accept it without screwing themselves over. It's not just about the pay, it's also about the protections for future writers against things like ChatGPT doing half the work so they don't get credited.
To be a bit serious...
It is more about some semblance of predictability and job security than cash.
We're still here and waiting for you and your team John to bring us those real, in depth and hard hitting reports. You guys ROCK.
we’re all gonna still be here when the strike is over, so you guys take your time until you get fair pay

I miss you John 😢 But writers deserve fair compensation ✊✊✊
Oats oats give them oats yum
I hope john oliver covers the writer's strike when he gets back
Oh, you bet your ass he most likely will.
More likely strikes in general, as there have been plenty both successful and unsuccessful recently, and the Rail Strike may be being reopened soon.
All depends on how it turns out doesn’t it. If the strikers don’t win, business daddy might make them act like it never happened
@@Michaela_ZC I think it's more likely to be covered by LWT if it fails because the show mostly only covers depressing things/things that still need action to be positive, part of why I think it'll be a general episode about Strikes, because I assume the Writers strike will be successful, and they already covered Unions, not long before the strike.
@@Michaela_ZC 1) When has he ever listened to Big Business Daddy; sure, he'll listen to Daddy Driver, but not who we're talking about...
2) The Actors strike was already authorized (by a vote with 97.91% in favor) and should start next week (maybe the following since the 1st is next Saturday; contract expires on 30 Jun at midnight)- that's gonna put a damper in studio "keep working, ignore the strike" plans
3) The Teamsters and IATSE are refusing to cross the picket lines, and I'm seen them at some of the events/lines already (as well as SAG members)
As much as I miss your show, I wouldn't cross a picket line for it. Im glad to see you feel the same. Solidarity with the writers and any workers striking for what they are rightfully owed. ✊

This is my MOST MISSED show because of the strike, it's the reason to have a MAX subscription.
I'm glad that JO is absolutely refusing to stop supporting the writers strike.
I'm not sure how. From this short video, it is impossible to figure out what it is about. I never would have learned that if it wasn't for the comments.
I can't wait for John Oliver to return! Greatest show on television. Thank you for being so awesome
I mid this show so much, best of luck to the writers. John Oliver is a national treasure.
Because John Oliver has dual citizenship in the US and the UK, he is *two* national treasures!
Man I got excited when I saw an update from this channel.
I wish they would fkn pay those damn writers more because I enjoy late night comedy shows, especially John Oliver.
LWT has been the best thing on any network in a decade! And this is primarily due to the excellent writers on the show. I'm sure there are writers that are being paid their worth. For the most part, they are overlooked, taken for granted and underpaid. All they want is a living wage and decent healthcare, that's not too much to ask. There is power in a union!
And of course, John Oliver is a WGA member and a credited writer on the show.
Writers strike hit LastWeekTonight full force

I’m pretty sure John is part of the writing staff & thus the strike. I don’t think he gets to decide what folks get paid, that’s up to the whims of business daddy
Exactly, the writer strike goes far beyond the host of the show, or even the creator of the show. It’s beyond their control.
no I know that I'm not critiquing John I'm critiquing business daddy
@@Michaela_ZC...I believe that's the point being made here?
This is the only show I miss right now. The writers deserve what they're asking for and more.
The studio needs to pay up already! This is a phenomenal writing crew deserving of a living wage and so much more
Being from outside the US, and having no idea about the writers' strike (completely OOTL here), I was genuinely concerned about HBO or some other business daddy having cancelled this show for whatever reason. This situation sucks and the writers absolutely deserve to get paid, but I have to say I feel a bit relieved. Hopefully they get back as soon as possible, mondays are much more tolerable when I get to see their shenanigans.

His episode on air bud is a hidden gem and a true masterpiece
I don't remember that .. EDIT: I looked it up. I remember it now! 😂
@@jmr "And you might wonder why I spent a whole episode on air bud with a deep analysis of that film without any larger point. Oh I'll tell you why..... I'll tell you specifically why....... BECAUSE THERE AIN'T NO RULES AGAINST IT"
When you look at the whole episode that moment is so genius at the end 😂 also when he made the whole audience believe an NBA player was coming up and the camera panned to the entrance then the music stopped and he was like "Of course he isn't actually here. We're not getting an NBA player to talk about air bud. No way they accept What show you thought this was?"
I died 😂
Hell even the website exclusive on Chuck E. Cheese was a great supplemental episode that I'm sure not enough people watched because it simply wasn't on here or HBO/Max.
Love John and the writers, they make magic every week. Whatever they are asking to be paid, it’s worth it.

Absolutely love John oliver such a legend
I'm *so* glad they decided to put the "horse writing the scripts" joke, I've watched and rewatched clips from this channel so many time and it is still my favorite punchline they've done ever. So silly and memorable in a way that reminds you of how phenomenal the writing on this show can be.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I really really really missed you.
I'm now legitimately concerned that this writers' strike is going to undermine John's ability to challenge Disney's Mickey Mouse trademark filing...
Come on, -HBO- (sorry, "Max"): pay your writers what they're worth.
That's fine. It's not HBO: It's just TV anyway.
I’m pretty sure HBO is still the entity, rather Discovery. Either way, it’s only the streaming network that is called MAX.
Let's remember that the writers' strike is not exclusive to HBO/Discovery/Max.
Well, the lawyers are not on strike, are they?!
@@matzehali As I understood it, every episode that had Steamboat Mickey in the title cards or trotted him out on stage eroded Disney's inevitable claim that the Mouse was inexorably and exclusively tied to the Disney corporation and was thus entitled to trademark protection even once the copyright protection expired.
Something for Warner Discovery's consideration: pay the writers a fair wage so they can get back to work making our lives at least a little more bearable.
We are all waiting, and will wait as long as necessary. May those greedy holdouts f*** off in the quickest manner possible so we can move on to paying people the writers what they have deserved the entire time. I miss this show
