- Ever since we picked up the Audi A4 for our long-term test, this is the comparison I’ve been itching to do.
While the Mercedes C-Class claimed the sales crown last year, the 3 Series is a perennial bestseller and the undisputed benchmark in the compact luxury segment.
It’s the obvious choice to see how far the A4 has come in this generation, and whether it can match the 3 for luxury, quality, refinement, technology and driving dynamics. So which of these two sporty luxury sedans has the goods and the balance to deserve your attention?

Stop playing music during the entire video! No one wants to hear shitty, royalty free, 3 second loop music for 13 minutes! It adds nothing and only makes it harder to hear what is being said.

Not sure how you could prefer BMW Dials to Audi Virtual Cockpit, each to their own I suppose......
I don't prefer the dials to virtual cockpit. i love the adaptability of the screen and the graphics are spectacular - and in S models, the center-mounted tach and shift lights are cool. The point I was making is that BMW iDrive is simpler and easier to use because there is no confusion between the screens. Newer BMWs might actually introduce some of that confusion when they add more functionality in the gauge cluster, head-up display and gesture controls. I love all that neat tech, but when you add multiple ways to control things, it takes longer to get used to whichever method is your favourite way to control certain functions.
Fair enough, it all comes down to the driver in the end, I've driven the new A4, A3 and Q7 multiple times and had no issues with using the system!!

I've had both as service loaners from Audi/BMW dealerships.. the new A4 is a phenomenal car. Makes the C-Class feel like a little junker, driven a bunch of those. It has the looks and performance of a sports car with the creature comforts of a luxury car. The 3-Series is nice but a dinosaur compared to the new A4, and this is coming from someone with a collector quality e36 M3. The A4 feels much faster than a 5.7 to 60 car too. It's such a killer in every department. Seriously. Great car.
i just switch from 330xi to A4 2.0T S Line have to say there is no regrets. love the virtual cockpit, there is so many safely features come standard. highly recommend for drivers that want to have fun in daily base.

@@aircommandslipperz good owned a a3 now a4 its much better than bmw. if buy used go for 10-20,000 miles 2018-2019 usually pre certified owned, got 3 years of warranty 100k miles whichever comes first dealer ship hooked it up since i will be buying audis and only audis till im at a r8
I would definitely choose the audi over the bimmer. The interior fit, finish and overall quality is fantastic. Bmw just feel cheap and plain inside

It should be noted, that BMW 3 series does not have a spare tire, nor does it have a place in the trunk for it. Audi, on the other hand, comes with a spare!

Just to share my buying experience. I test drive both 2017 models. 330xi xdrive and A4 premium. I really like the Audi very spacious, airy cabin, great materials and technology. My brother showed me the bmw online and I was like meh it looked dated but he convinced me to drive it. I thought I loved the car. So next day I went to drive both again. Definitely the 3 series stole my heart. The front wheel drive exterior design of the Audi takes away from the luxurious feel(it does look like a Jetta). The bmw has some athleticism that’s hard to describe both looks wise and driving wise. Every with the fake leather and old platform I ended up with the 3 Series. Test drive both

We recently traded in our 06 Honda Civic for a 5-year old, 2017 BMW 3-Series. Wonderful car so far.
I like that he pointed out the -tilting- center armrest in the A4. This seems to be a VW trademark. Why does no one else do this? It's one of those things I feel is missing in every other car I drive.
I drove a base bottom of the line 2017 A4 with almost no options. At just under 40k. It is literally the best 40k sedan money can buy. It is that good. I am 6.5 feet tall and I can get comfortable in the back seat! I can sit behind myself. The Driving dynamics, seamless power delivery and efficiency are amazing. If for some reason the model 3 does not work out for me.....the A4 may be my next new car.
Own a 328ix and today test drove A4 - interior of Audi much better and seat more comfortable. Just my 2 cents, actual drive was pretty close.
Oh yeah thats one thing i dont like..cant find a comfortable seating position after years with my 335i. The back seat is horrible too, when i sat back there. LOL.
I own a 2016 BMW 328i xDrive and love it. The driving dynamics are amazing. I recommended an A4 to a friend based on this being his first luxury car and the fear of BMW service pricing.

Watching this in 2021. I own a 2017 A4. Audi did a good job at future proofing their car. The BMW looks very outdated compared to their new models.

Both are good cars. Seems like the newer generation prefers the Audi and the older generation goes for the BMW. Two good quality cars. I'm of the older generation and feel that BMW has a bit more on the classy side.
Personally, I will go with the A4 S-Line. I like the moonlight blue metallic, the car looks stunning

The BMW looks like a rental car and the plastics inside leave a lot to be desired...I know as I had a 335i. Recently, I made the switch to an Audi S4 and it's so much nicer.
Don't lie. No one would ever switch a 335i for S4. That would be really dumb.
You guys should've tested a 330i with the M sport package to match the S line package
The S line is just a trim, not performance, its still the base, the s4 is comprable to m3

Why compare S Line A4 with base 3 Series? why not M Sport?
EDDY SENG and also comparing a platform that remained mostly unchanged since 2012 versus one that was recently introduced.
SomeRandomGuy Ideally they should wait for the new 3 series that is probably just around the corner.
SomeRandomGuy 2018 would probably be accurate since past 3 series generations have followed the roughly 5 year trend before a huge remake. A 2 year difference platform development is at least more comparable than an almost 5 year one.
0812rs bruh, ideally they should compare to the c300. Because the new 3 series won't be released until late next year. By then the Audi and C class would already be 2 years and 3 years older respectively. The 3 series isn't that good of a car to begin with anyways because the steering is getting too artificial and the interior isn't as good to look at compare to the A4 or C class. I would rather go back to the 3 series of old, that has no comparison.
Even if you compare the A4 to C Class, the C Class would still win in all of the areas except the infotainment. DCT always feels better in manual as oppose to Audi's automatic-manual.
The S Line A4 is nothing but a high optioned A4. Same performance as the regular A4 Quattro. I think is a fair comparison. I am not a BMW fan, but in this case I would go with the 3 series. The Audi A4 is just too bland for me, maybe the Audi S4, but then there is the M3 :)
A4 ever!
I'm in love with my A4, the 2017 redesign made the car just a bit sexier and the tech is amazing. My biggest deciding factor was talking to people I know with both. Never found any excitement with the BMW owners and here in the Cleveland winter's, they all complained the x drive didn't work all that great. I tried several times during the past winter to get my car to slide or even get stuck in the driveway, never happened. Even with 11in of heavy wet snow of an unplowed drive and the extra build up from the city plows at the end of the driveway, the car moved like there wasn't any snow at all. Can't say I'd drive a BMW even if they gave me one.
Audi interiors are gorgeous. I love their digital cockpit and that flat bottom wheel, paired with a lovely 6 speed manual is about as perfect as one can get. I've also heard the A4 is a bit more reliable than the BMW.

I"ve owned B9 Audi A4 and G20 330i, basically the same platform as the F30, and IMO neither are fun to drive stock (though I'm used to faster cars). However, when you pair the A4 with DL382 transmission tune and Unitronic Stage 1+ ECU tune, the thing was a blast to drive. Same with the 330i G20, on a custom Navardi tune + xHP tranny tune. These tunes change the character of the cars - and both become as smooth as a Lexus, but in terms of power, the A4 feels like the previous gen S4, and the 330i feels like the 6 cylinder 340i (if not better).
i miss my e90 sooo bad so this is something to consider
A4 no doubt, BMW's interior belongs to the 90s and that analogue dash with orange light.....so dated.
You still saying that after the g20 come out 😂 the g20 is miles ahead of the Audi better drive and the interior is up there drive a bmw before you complain about it

Trapping all Day keep in mind this happens to the germans all the time. BMW, Merc, and Audi always come out with new models, always one-upping the other. There is no “better model” because give it a year or two, and the competition has already passed them. It’s the competition between these 3 that keeps their innovation and allows for these machines to progress so wonderfully

Hmmm I got lower than 5.5 seconds 0-60 on the a4 (stock) (using launch control)
i cant post a picture of my time slip on here but my 18 P-Plus S Line 5.1 to 60mph and 12.9 @ 108mph in 1/4 completely stock.
The 0-60 times are pretty much identical, numerous Publications have gotten 5.2 for the A4, and 5.3 for the 330i. It really depends on what tires are equipped, and the location being tested and such
I really care about that 0 - 60 on a school run.
Audi is my all time favorite car brand but the 3 Series is available as a hybrid which is what I want.

Reliability wise whats better Audi or BMW? I know they're expensive to fix but if you do preventative maintenance, which car is less of a hassle
Personally I like the Audi better because it’s more affordable than the 3 series and I feel like it fits my personality better
I like all cars. I wouldn't say no to either but think I'd choose the BMW over the two.

Most of you are talking about 2 cars you don’t even drive, I just purchased a bmw over an Audi because of how much better of a drive they are, sure the interior isn’t as the Audi, but bmw is so much more cost effective.
A4 is so much more sexier, BMWs new design theme can't keep up even with the next generation 3 series

Drove both... have owned 2 Audi’s in the past, including a 2008 S4 I bought new.. In the end I went home in a new 330i and don’t regret it
ive actually gotten a 5.2 out of a stock B9. and my buddies with the same timing gear did a 5.6 on his RWD 330. I'm buying a b8.5 a4 and once I get stage 2 I'm hoping to make 4s look easy lol. but either of these cars would be amazing. if you are getting it for fun rather then work like me, id get the 340i over any of the trims of either cars
Same. I've gotten 4.9 and 5 pretty consistently. They definitely undervalued their HP and 0-60.
I own a 3 series 2014 and I just test drived the 2017 A4. Both cars are really good. You cannot do anything wrong if you buy either of these. I find however the bmw slightly better.

if u compare this bmw to a hemi challenger its a hair of a second behind the challenger more fun to drive and faster around the corners plus its offers a much more space especially behind the front seats

I doubt my choice with 2018 Audi A4 Sline until ......after one yr I use Dynamic - Mannual and ground pedal... 6k rpm. Gosh. is this still a basic Luxury sedan. It's a fucking beast, bad tempered violent ...... breath. Audi you changed.

So you compare an S-Line Audi with a base BMW (M Pack anyone?) and then fail to take into consideration that the F30 is older as a generation. It was just like comparing the F30 to the B8 when the F30 came out. Come one....
I tried both and bought the 3 series as better to drive and a lot more comfortable even though it was the se version of the A4 I test drove. I bought a 330i msport in Estoril with adaptive suspension. Amazing comfort and ace handling even better when you ditch the runflats. I love the m sport steering wheel much better than any in the Audi I don’t like flat bottomed wheels. I prefer the look outside of the 3 series specially from the front but think the interior of the a4 wins though I like both. Like wise both look good outside though the 3 series looks much better with different wheels to those on the test car. Ignore claimed mpg of the beemer. In the real world it does 30 though I never use eco mode and I don’t try super hard to get the last few yards out of every gallon.

It is not correct that the BMW is quicker, at least not according to Car & Driver, who I trust the most. 5-60, the A4 is 6.0 seconds. 330i is 6.7 seconds.

SirBlank my family leased a 3 series BMW for their business, it’s garbage. Not to mention electrical problems with the car itself. The new revised 3 series released this year is leagues ahead in terms of looks exterior and interior
@@shadowrambo117 I have owned two 3 series, a 2014 and 2018 and never had a single problem with either of them. Thing is that that 3 series was probably not taken care of, and in terms of how it looks is only YOUR opinion, I think the 3 series Touring is the most beautiful car.
if you put them in a drag race I am 90% sure the audi would win... just because its 0-60 is claimed faster doesn't necessarily mean that it is

I love both brands but in 2017 the BMW looks so old next to the Audi. I mean the Interieur and the rear lights. They look on the BMW like 2007 car
You can not compare a S-Line A4 from 2017 with a BASE 3-series from 2012.
For a fair comparision wait until BMW launch the new 3-series in this year (2018)
Audi, looks better inside and out! I drove a S4 Loaner from Audi and it was amazing!!! I believe it was almost 70k on the maroney sticker.

3 series is the best, always. The driving experience is perfect.
I test drove both, then I chose lexus is300 rwd turbo, to have more luxury, comfort, unique styling, and enjoy it so much. So many people like it and come up to me. But audi is still a nice balance, bmw is more aggressive, so id rather get a dedicated sports car than a bmw

My 2009 A4 that I bought from Audi Fairfield as a CPO has been burning oil ever since I bought it. I brought it back 2K miles after I bought it but Audi kept denying responsibility... Now that there was a Class Action settlement, Audi of America is willing to charge me half of the $6K to replace the piston rings. This is total BS. I keep getting the run around. Audi won't do the right thing, even though they lost a class action law suit - still giving me a hard time... German engineering is BS... DON"T BUY an AUDI... I own an S5 and an A4 and am furious at how Audi is treating me. They don't want to take responsiblity for their defective design which has been a problem ever since they sold me the car. I asked the service manager for the prior service history and they don't have it. They were willing to Certify the car when I bought it, but now they won't fix what has been wrong ever since I owned it. Stay away... Audi Fairfield says talk to Audi of America... Audi of America says it's not their problem - they will only cover $3K out of a $6K service to fix a defect that they are 100% responsible for... Try talking to anybody higher up and they pretend their is nobody to talk to...

Bimmer interior looks like cheap faded crud. The silver lines on the doors don't even line up... Which really bother me. Just overall let down on the inside. The outside has awkward proportions aswell. With tiny sunken wheels.

Although, my current car is a BMW 335, i think the Audi looks better and higher quality material. Pretty happy with maintenance/fix/repairs with the BMW..not sure what it would be like owning an Audi. What to do...what to do..lol
BMW has gone backwards with their new LED lights, it looks ridiculous, more so at night when it looks like retrofitted white bulbs. The previous BMW xenon lights looked way cooler
BMW DRL's are just so generic now... across all their line-up is that SAME halo rings as it has been for many many years. What I love about Audi, is that they differentiate EACH model line-up with their own unique LED DRL which makes their cars far more identifiable and differentiated. Luck hell, 3 series looks exactly like the 5 series, etc.

The Audi A4 S-line vs. BMW 330i Base, good job. M-sport trim would of been an equal challenge. I own a 2014 S4 and a 430i, the Beemer is all around fun with proper power, handling, and great MPG. The S4 is scary fast with a smooth ride and a drinking problem. The gas station is your second home. Soon I will trade in the S4 for a BMW 440I Gran Tour.
The s line is base, just trim, the s4 is the performance line

This comparison was unbelievably boring. 6 minutes to review each car? To think motortrend has videos as long as thing and they plug in actual racing. This should have been 7 minutes tops.
