    I'm playing a sun soul monk right now, he was captured as a slave and transported into the under dark, but one day he escaped and saw the glory that was the sun, so he started worshipping the sun and he gets his power by photosynthesising(kinda of, It is more likely that he just mutated due to solar radiation, but whatever)

    I played in an Adventurers League game a few days ago where our Sun Soul monk became the deadly finisher of almost dead zombies with his ranged radiant damage. Whenever one of the zombies would be barely standing after having passed its Undead Fortitude save, he would just finish them off immediately, often 2 or 3 at a time (because we started focusing more on half-"dead" ones instead of ones that were at 1 HP after passing the save). He certainly was the huge MVP of the entire dungeon. Moral of the story: Never underestimate radiant damage !

    I really like this class because it gives you a lot of options for combat. Some foes you want to be able to keep distance from and this let's you do that. The damage seems low, but remember that radiant damage is one of the least resisted damage types in the game.

  • @roribeedm

    Say hello to your favorite DBZ character. Not even joking. Everything you get from the subclass is basically a DBZ attack.
    Radiant Sun Bolt? A multi-shot Kamehameha
    Arc Strike? Piccolo's Evil Explosion from the video games
    Sunburst? Vegeta's Big Bang Attack
    Heck even Sun Shield is their Fiery Constipated Yelling Power Up Aura.
    Not overly surprising since around half the monk subclasses are basically an anime character of some sort. Astral Self: Jojo. Four Elements: Avatar the Last Airbender. Open Hand: Fist of the North Star. Shadows: Pick your favorite ninja.

      I can agree to a degree, but personally I think that title goes to the ascendant dragon as it has the ability to change its damage type in punches and gets decent utility out of other tradition upgrades

    • @farrex0
      @farrex0 5 месяцев назад

      @@burkebrittain1073 Having the need to change damage type, has to be one of the least useful things tho. Often the reason one would want that, is to bypass resistances. But the monk gets magic damage at level 6 and radiant damage is one of the least resisted damage types.
      Not to mention, there are plenty of vulnerable enemies to radiant, making it a better option than any offered by the dragon.
      Breath Weapon is a worse Burning hands, it only gets better than burning hands at around level 11th.
      Having the ability to fly is good, but not that good on a monk that doesn't have many ranged options.
      Way of the AD only is better than Sun Soul, above level 11th when you get the only true good feature, and the dragon breath becomes actually good.

    Searing Sunburst: Big Bang Attack.
    Sun Shield: You go Super Sayain.

    I'm playing a sun soul monk in Curse of Strahd and the sun bolts are really useful against undead creatures, especially those that regenerate every round. Although, I do agree that when playing a sun soul monk, you end up more on the ranged side and the damage output is a bit underwhelming. However, I decided to take a level in light cleric, and I honestly recommend it if you're willing to be a level or two behind in monk. It blends thematically with the way of the sun soul, adds another healer in the party, and warding flare is great when stronger enemies (or vampires) are right in your face.

    I'm playing the sun soul monk and it's the best class. Not only that I feel like a DBZ character, but I'm also almost immortal when fighting on an open field. With 40ft movement speed I can blast someone (damage isn't the best, but that's not so important) and get out of their range. Only way for them to reach me is either dash or ranged attacks (which I can counter using deflect missles). I'm telling you guys, with sun soul there is almost nothing that can kill you.

    I love this class. I had made a Halfling Monk name Danny, and his story as to how he had gotten this great power was that he was fishing one morning. Then he looked up one morning at a shooting star, closed to his eyes to make a wish...... until he got knocked out as something hit him (the little meteorite.) Yeah, I use that as an explanation to how he gotten this cool power. Great video as always

    Playing an Aasimar Sorceress who had her magic burned from her body. She wears robes and is a noble. Everyone assumes she is a NPC caster until she gets into melee. I've broken the party out of Jail twice, talked them out of an execution and saved the life cleric with healing hands a nat fail on death save and was not willing to risk losing him.
    The Light cantrip and Orb of light go well with praising the sun.
    I highly recommend Aasimar (Protector) or the living torch mixed with Sun Soul. You turn into a Persudo Caster.
    You aint a ranged nuker and you are not that powerful but holy heck the RP potential and Combat flow is great.

    Wood elf with a bow and 18 dex. Two long bow attacks at 8.5 damage on average + the furry of blows for two attacks that do an average of 7.5 (d6 martial die) damage each at range. That is 17+15=32 damage on average per turn starting at level five and it costs one ki point and no feats. Not to shabby.

    I like most of what you all said here, though low damage output is a bit odd. You have three attacks at level 5, four if you spend a ki point, and while you do a d6, you can do it very often. Higher levels you can spend those points more often without worrying, so with a d8 or d10 damage die, you are doing the same number of attacks and damage as a fighter, from 30 feet away, with the ability to fireball things or use burning hands if they cluster on you.

    • @mattdodson1272
      @mattdodson1272 3 года назад +2

      A big downside is that RAW the radiant sun bolt is not the same as your martial arts in that you can't use a free single bolt as a bonus action. You are forced to spend a ki for two bonus action sun bolts. So if you want to keep up with damage of other classes you're forced to burn through your ki really quickly. This quick drain on your ki is pretty debilitating at low levels.

    I mean sure the damage isn't fantastic but Monk was never about being the biggest damage dealer, since it's more a skirmisher like a rogue, but if you do get all your hits in you do quite a bit of damage overall. I have yet to actually play a Monk though but, this will be the one I choose, while multiclassed into something else probably. But options and versatility, which a lot of people below talk about is primarily what it is about. Honestly the 17th level does kind of suck, so taking 3 levels in something else will likely make up for it if you get to level 20. (Like say, Cleric or Rogue perhaps, or even fighter/Barb) Also remember its abilities is AoE, unlike say Kensei and the like, so you will probably shine against groups of enemies.

    I feel like Searing Sunburst gets a lot of unnecessary flack. Having a Con save AOE is exactly what you want for minions, mages, or people who have evasion, seeing as evasion only works on Dex saves. Not to mention it's free to cast with a max potential range of 170 ft, 150 ft target with 20 ft radius. Combined with your movement of 50 ft at that level you could theoretically spend 1 ki for Step of the Wind and target a cluster of enemies 170 ft away and move 100 ft in the same round. Is it a boss slayer, no, but it never really seemed like it was supposed to be. At level 11 you are useful in all ranges of combat which is nice if you are playing a game that requires tactical placements.

    • @HouseLyrander
      @HouseLyrander Год назад

      Enemies effectively DO have Evasion against it because a successful Save negates all damage. The damage is also really bad even against chaff unless you're spending a lot of Ki. It's not nothing (having an option against far away enemies is better than not having one), but it has a lot of shortcomings.

    • @cgrandall625
      @cgrandall625 Год назад

      @@HouseLyrander You're right. But the fact that it doesn't generally target a Dex save can have benefits and it's own hurdles I guess. Never used it myself but it's long range and Con save seems like a good ability to use on distant spellcasters.

    • @HouseLyrander
      @HouseLyrander Год назад

      @@cgrandall625 Having both tried Sun Soul and DMed for a lot of Monks (including Sun Soul), I think a Kensei with a Longbow (or a straight up Warlock) would be better option since they can snipe squishy targets at similar ranges and still contribute in more general situations as a consistent damage dealer, especially with Tasha's adding Ki Fueled Attack which makes Deft Strike so much better.
      The big problem I think Sun Soul has is that it's a very "flavor first" subclass, which a lot of SCAG subclasses suffer from. However, part of a DMs job is to make sure everyone is having fun, even if it means fixing WotCs mistakes. A few changes that I like to make to Sun Souls (and Monks as a whole) is to bump Martial Arts dice up a size so they start at d6, add the Monk's Proficiency Bonus to their Ki total (this also helps multiclassing), make Ki Save DC based on the Monk's choice of Dex or Wis, and make Searing Sunburst deal half damage on a successful Save. This overall helps address some common Monk complaints and gives Searing Sunburst more of a role as an AoE pseudo Cantrip.
      Also, happy Christmas. Remember to enjoy yourself, and enjoy the most festive song of all time... Fairytale of New York.
