  • For today’s How-To-Thursday, I decided to piggyback off the success of last week’s video on, the best Multi Tools in BMX and used the Animal Kotulak tool to show you how to install and what the differences are between a half-link (Shadow V2 Interlock Chain) and full-link (Primo 510) chain!
    As always, I hope you found this tutorial enjoyable and informational! If there’s anything I left unclear, please don’t hesitate to ask me in the comment section below.
    Thank you everyone :)

    It's exactly the same amount of pins (and rollers) in both normal and halflink chains. The main benefit, except adjustment which you can also get with using one single halflink on a normal chain, of a halflink chain is that (if correctly installed) the plates protects each other when grinding so that it's harder took hook "under" one of the links and bend (witch usually mean the next crank you do means smashing your knee into the stem). For example I do a lot of pedalgrinds, for me halflink chains are superior. If you do not grind a lot on your chain side a normal chain, with or without ONE halflink, stretches a lot less.

    Hi, I just put on an Odyssey blue bird full link chain. The wheel axle is pretty far back, but it tightens down ok, it looks similar to your video here. But it looks like the back ends of the frame are bending just a tiny bit. How can you tell if your wheel is too far back? I didn't use the half link. I know I can add that on, I'm just wondering if I need to. Thanks

    I got 2 chain breakers brand new and I was trying to loosen the pin on this chain but the breakers couldn’t hold the half link chain cause the spacing was off. So I tried to twist the pin out anyways but it kept sliding off the breaker or would start going crooked. Needless to say I now have to broken chain breakers and a bike still with no chain

    added note, where ever you brake the chain and put it back together, take a pair of pliers or anything you can use the compress the plates from both sides onto the pin slightly. also check our chains every little one to see if you have any pics trying to fall off the side of your chain and break it.

    Hey Alfredo, great video! it was very informative.
    I have a few questions about the other half-link chain that Shadow Conspiracy sells. The Interlock Supreme Chain.
    I'm considering buying it but is it really one of the toughest chains on the market or is it all hype?
    And is it true the Interlock Supreme chain breaks some chaintools?
    I'm considering doing a 30/9 ratio or maybe up to 33/9(even though 33 might be overkill). Could I use a half-link chain with either ratio? or would there be issues with the chain snapping or my gear wearing down quickly?
    Thanks for the video Alfredo.

    • @AlfredoMancuso
      @AlfredoMancuso  8 лет назад

      The supreme chain is by far the toughest half link available! Worth every dollar! I ride it on a 25-9 ratio so it'll be fine on the 30 or 33-9!! +Sheldon

    • @bmxriderforlife1234
      @bmxriderforlife1234 6 лет назад

      if you run an over geared set up stay away from half links. sorry alf.
      if you run over geared set ups then i only recommend two chains. kmc 710 kool chain(710sl if youre light on chains) or that crazy whipperman chain, think its called the 1G8
      half link chains stretch easier the normal chains. over gearing your bike stretches chains even faster. however you also gain a benefit of more links spreads the load out over a larger area increasing strength.
      supreme chain from shadow might hold up better then others but ive tried every other shadow chain, and ive used some other fancy half link chains and such. full length chains work better if you dont need the smaller adjustments. or run a single half-link.
      will say this though, my buddy runs a supreme with 9-28 gear ratio and is fine. but i ran left side drive did grinds on the right and still blew up a v2 shadow chain real quick when i ran 9-30. but i rape chains pretty bad for not doing sprocket tricks or hitting it during grinds. probably something to do with being over geared. id suggest a tree sprocket or anything else in spline drive if you can, set it up so your chain line is as perfect as you can get it, and then a whipperman chain. you can also get some dirtbike and motorcycle chains that will work from what i hear.
      if you already got a shadow let me know how its doing, may have found a new chain for when im building up bikes for homies.

    Hey Alfredo, finally got my bike done today and every time I pedal now my chain makes a crunching noise (halflink btw) is it just wearing in? Also what's a good way to reduce the noise or eliminate it completely? Cheers

      Could be a few things, you could've installed it backwards or upside down or it could just be old and might require grease/oil

      Alfredo Mancuso I was thinking that too as I have second hand wheels too and the driver is a lil loose and if I tighten it the tiniest bit it doesn't spin and thought the chain would be wearing into the grooves

      Alfredo Mancuso ended up being my driver, brought a new alloy one and no problems since and the noise has gone away, cheers!

    Hello
    Is the kmc k810sl a good chain?
    I heard that it break easily.
    Do you think this is real or only a coincidence

      i bellieve the 810sl is actually the geared version os a 710sl,
      the kmc 710 super light is a strong chain. you wont break it. the 810 probably has the skinnier teeth set up so wouldnt work for bmx.
      if you want an even stronger chain then a 710sl buy a kmc kool chain. aka the standard 710 without hollow pins and plates.
      this one www.chainreactioncycles.com/ca/en/kmc-k710-kool-chain/rp-prod25431?gs=1&sku=sku79598CA&pgrid=55275506289&ptaid=pla-427736750382&PLA+-+All+Products&|smhAL0nFb_dc|pcrid|253940205581|pkw||pmt||prd|79598CA
      as for the 810sl pretty sure my buddy ran one on his mountain bike fine for like two seasons. lasted him almost as long as a 710 sl. however he had the thinner chainring and rear driver set up and is also a weight wheenie, his 26 inch mtb with suspension weighs less then any bmx bike can without adding titanium or running pegless and brakeless. 21-22 pounds on the dot. so id say if strength is of concern buy the 710 versions either the kool chain or the super light. if weight is a concern maybe the 810sl and then if pure strength is a concern then the kool chain or theres a company called whipperman that makes a crazy full link chain that looks like it belongs on a dirtbike.
      think its called the whipperman 1G8 chain
