  • Dr. Nakamatsu, colloquially known as Dr. NakaMats, claims to be the most prolific inventor in the world. He holds 3,500 patents and counting-more than any other inventor living or dead. He recently celebrated his 88th birthday and plans to live to 144, while dealing with his greatest challenge yet: treating his cancer.
Motherboard met up with Dr. NakaMats at his birthday party to talk about the importance of inventing, and why he plans to keep innovating for another 60 years.

This guy seems like the Vanilla Ice of the tech world. He 'invented' the 3.5" diskette two years after the industry had already settled on the 3.5" floppy and more than a decade after the first company began using hard casings for disks? Sounds legit. Look up his patents and notice how every one of them are either exact descriptions of already existing technology or existing technology with slight, meaningless tweaks. How else could he possibly claim to have invented goggles, swim trunks or any of the other things that existed up to 2,000 years before he was born? Or is he claiming that in those 2,000 years he was the first person to put a weapon under a wig? Oh, right, his patent actually does claim that...

I know what a floppy disk is. And even his claims about selling the floppy patent to ibm seem off. Most articles on him use there words carefully saying "NakaMats claims." Like there not sure about him. Probably because its strange for someone to invent something technical like a floppy disk and then make something stupid and nonsensical like condoms with magnet in them.

I know what a floppy is I used them with my old mpc and for passing around python racing sims back in the day.
Dr. NakaMats received a Japanese patent in 1952, this virgin birth is disputed by IBM, which insists its own team of engineers developed the device in 1969. Still, to avoid conflicts, Big Blue struck a series of licensing agreements with him in 1979.
I'm going to side with IBM. Even most articles on this guy are use there words carefully to say that is inventions are only claims.
Ibm says. The first floppy disk was invented by a team of researchers at IBM. The team was headed by Alan Shugart and the main designer in the team was David Noble.

I'm a bit late, but that's okay, doctor nakamatsu invented a precursor device for the floppy disk, which was made of paper, which if confirmed is that he sold several dozen patents to ibm, nakamatsu says they were for the floppy disk, ibm says no, we don't know who is telling the truth.

Based upon a patent issued in 1952, Nakamatsu claims to have invented the first floppy disk[31] well before IBM's floppy disk patent was filed in 1969.[32] However, what Nakamatsu patented in 1952 was a paper for optical sound player.[16] In contrast to a floppy disk, this Nakamatsu patent discloses the use of printed paper for storage instead of the magnetic material of a floppy disk. It is not rewritable and lacks most elements of the IBM floppy disk patent. Since the paper was 'floppy' material, he claims he had invented the floppy disk (sometimes he uses the phrase "floppy media"); however, it should be noted that flexible magnetic recording media was well known prior to 1952, in tape and wire recording.
