So it was partly comfort, partly features I really liked, and partly to take on a new challenge (learn C++). I did the switch in late 2023, and it took 6 weeks to rebuild everything I had working at that point (thankfully most of the art I could keep, except VFX). Unity is still a nice engine: it's lightweight and C# is less obtuse than C++, but now that I've gotten used to it it kinda does everything I want to do a little bit better.
MikaMobile team, I just have to say you guys will hold a place in mobile gaming nobody can touch. Beautiful animations, simple intuitive gameplay yet somehow deeply complex for those looking for more. The fact that you guys do not monetise your games to the Nth degree does not go unnoticed and your fan base will always love you for that. Battleheart and Battleheart Legacy are classics… and have skyrocketed you to mobile gaming royalty. Thank you for all your efforts.
I think a different technique would be in order there - the broken concrete effect is made of opaque geo, and just switching it to transparent (to allow some kind of gradual fade) would introduce some sorting issues between foreground and background bits

Hey Mika I'm curious, with the new developments with Unity engine runtime fees, what will come of the project? Will you be migrating engines? Really hoping development on this game can continue.
Good question! Development will continue one way or another, so no worries there. I was just texturing some environment art this past week. Unity is still a great engine, so its frustrating to see the company make such clumsy decisions. While the proposed fee shouldn't affect us (we've never passed $1M+ in a single year), the whole thing is just overly complicated, and I definitely won't abide having my install count decided by the app phoning home. Self-reported sales figures, while annoying to have to manage, is exactly how Epic handles things with Unreal, and is the only way any royalties or fees should be calculated. I've been working as a VFX artist for hire the last few years, and a lot of that time has been spent in Unreal. There were days even before this announcement where I considered switching, just because Unreal's art tools are spectacularly good. This whole situation definitely made me curious to learn a little more C++. 😄

Its really unfortunate how things are going down with the company right now but its relieving to hear things should continue as normal! Definitely helps you've got unreal experience just in case LOL.
Just found this after nostalgia reminded me of Zombieville USA. I hadn’t played it in 12 years! Since I was in high school so I’m 100% looking forward to what’s next

I remember playing Zombieville back in the day. One of the best games on IOS. You nailed the conversion from 2d to 3d, it feels just like I remember.
