The story of The Hanger Project: www.kirbyallis...
Have gradually darkened a pair of mid brown shoes over a year in the way you have described, they look beautiful and completely unique to me. One of the joys of owning good quality shoes.
I always apply my pigments and dyes while wearing a white Charvet dress shirt & bespoke
charcoal suit.
don't you realise he's the butler you utter pleb?
I love that you leave absolutely no stone unturned in your videos. I'm sure you're a busy guy, yet you make time to reply to many of the comments left by viewers. A very admirable endeavor, Kirby. Thank you so much for your work. I have purchased from The Hanger Project a few times now and have been thoroughly pleased each time. Your videos turned me on to Saphir products and I seriously won't use anything else now nor will I purchase them from anyplace other than The Hanger Project. Keep up the great work and for the love of God don't let anyone near the Goyard back there!
Thanks, Michael! Your comment means a lot. We put a lot of time and energy into these videos and to responding to comments, which can take a lot of time! I'm constantly humbled by how much engagement we receive on this channel!
Haha. I love the Goyard, which is why it's at my office and not at home!!
Wonderful video: Mr. Allison is an old world professional...the kind that I thought had disappeared today. I'll try the technique and tag my results. I'll look at your other videos. Fantastic.
I couldn't find much on this topic after seeing what RCMP boots look like when first issued.
Thank you for showing the process.
Trudeau bootlicker!
It's clear, concise explanations like I just saw in the video above, that encouraged me to join The Hanger Project site and up my shoe game. I just made my first purchases yesterday. Can't wait for the box to arrive and to start in. - Thank you.
Hi Kirby. I really love the eloquence of your presentation.
Thank you as always for your informative videos! No question, Much love from Japan.
Just picked up my first pair of nice dress shoes: Allen Edmonds McAllisters in Bourbon. This channel will help me keep those shoes looking great for years!
Great! Make sure you polish them! Even new shoes need some love.
Awesome demonstration. Looking at a pair of double strap monks but the color is not quite what I want. Very light tan like the ones in your video. The result is exactly the color I'm looking for. Reddish brown.
I am a long time customer of The Hanger Project, nice video! Oh and that Goyard case is beautiful
Well done.. liked and supported.. Do you have any alternative natural oil/wax conditioner if you don't want to darken the shoes ?
Very well done.
You have great style and the videos are great and helpful.
If you have no plans on making a burnished effect on shoes, what's the use of matching the pate de luxe color with the shoe just in terms of shining (not covering scuffs)? Wont the neutral color be more versatile to use for all?
Excellent. Thank You!
06:58 You used reno mat first??? I don't recall being shown or even mentioned. How does that impact the results?
You do a good job. Now I better get some decent clothes to start .
Kirby, “the Pro”👍
Hello, Kirby!
Thank you for your project it's very informotive for me as I'm kind of newby in quality shoes. Moreover I'm from Russia and the topic is not quite popular here so it's hard to find reliable information. Nevertheless I've found vlog of the guy who manages shoecare service. And he recomends applying Saphir Invulner (because of the weather condition and reagents on pavements during autumn and winter) before going with creme and wax. What do you think about it? I didn't see you mentioning this product. Thank you beforehand.
Kind regards, Maksim.
Thanks for the tips! Ive got some 2 tone leather packer boots and I want to even out the colors brown and burgundy on the different panels!
Will this work on exotic skin boots like caiman?
What colours should be used to darken burgundy shoes? I want the colour to have more depth and a touch of the antique effect
Kirby like the video as always. Your necktie I noticed is not for sale any longer is that something that will change soon? It's my favorite!
Great video! I have a tan pair of Allen Edmonds derbies and a matching belt. If I darken the shoes a bit, will the belt still "match"? I typically wear my derbies in a casual outfit (e.g. an Oxford shirt and chinos with or without a casual sports jacket). Thanks!
I have a Question Does Saphir Have a Color Chart so you could take the guessing out of witch colour to use?
www.kirbyallison.com/saphir-nuancier-color-chart.html
Very good video on a useful topic. Can I suggest taking the photo of your outfit against a more flattering background?
Great video. Great attire as well
Do the waxes on the shoes need to be stripped away before applying the cream polish?
I was wondering this as well- wouldn't the wax stop subsequent applications of cream from being absorbed? Especially if you were trying to darken the shoe over time with multiple applications of wax and cream? could anyone advise?
I would like to darken & add tones of orange to a handbags coral trim. Is there a color you’d recommend that may help bring the coral (with pink tones), to more of a burnt orange?
Do you have any videos dyeing natural leather boots or shoes to cognac or any tips?
Is recoloration permanent?Great video!
Hi Kirby! Cna this be done on my weejuns loafers?
What about hand-dyed patinated shoes? I have two pairs of the Magnanni Cruz in cognac, I would like to darken one of the pairs quite a bit, to medium brown. Is this possible while maintaining the patina stripes? Or is like a top coat sealing in the base color?
Will the Reno'mat destroy the patina?
Thanks!
Great video thank you! I'm looking to darken a pair of Allen Edmonds cortland from a medium brown to a dark brown not sure what color I will be using yet.. any recommendations??
Hi Kirby! Where did you find those flat laces??
i have a question Mr Kirby, should i remove entire old polish everytime i'm applying the new polish on the shoes to get them shine or just a bit of cleaning using leather cleaner and than apply the polish right away?
Is it possible to lighten the colour SIR ?
I used neutral polish on my newly bought leather derby’s. However they have turned darker and have lost their beautiful gradient light to dark shade.
How do I get them back to their original shade?
As you used neutral polish, it probably means the shoes were just natural cured leather and not dyed brown, (same as most horse tack) so they've soaked up the polish as if it were an oil, changing the colour permanently, due to it sinking into and feeding the leather. On the good side, the shoes will ultimately appreciate the feeding, and last longer as they'll be more supple.
Hi. I just purchased Birkenstock’s (the $100 dollar kind). So not real leather but Birko-Flor nubuck. I purchase the “mocha” but they seem still very light. I want to darken them but not sure what the best and easiest method would be.
Kirby, as always, I enjoyed your video. I have a pair of gray suede shoes that I feel are a little to light in color. Is there a way that I can darken them myself using the Saphir products? Or is that something only a professional should do? Thank you.
I know you don"t advise DIY shoe dyeing, but for the foolhardy, can you please advise best dye/polish color to change tan leather shoes to burgandy? Thanks.
I'd get a similar colour tan real leather sample from ebay first (about £2, and to prevent you regretting changing your shoes) and then experiment in small patches. First try a burgundy renovating polish (it has actual dye in the cream and feeds the leather too, it's really intended for recolouring scuffs). That will almost certainly make them a deeper reddish brown, but not change the colour too drastically. You can use several coats. Then you could try some burgundy dye, (make sure it's real dye and not the paint on kind). It may come out a slightly browner burgundy than the label, but as long as you get a pink based colour, it will probably work out very well. I've done both in the past, and have been happy with the results. Good luck with it :)

Thanks very much for that info.
I have a question, I have a pair of burgundy shoes I got online that are a little too dark than I thought they will be. is there a way to lighten them? the cap toe is black and it is too much :\
thank you a lot!
1:32 Those arent strands..theyre sanfords
i was just going to comment that.
Yup, strands are oxford, those are derby
Hi Kirby. I've been waiting for quite some time for your large horse hair brush to come back in stock. Do you have any enlightenment? Thank you so much for your high quality products
They just landed! Should be on the website now.
Thanks so much for the response but for me, they've been out of stock for a real good month or so now.
Rigondeaux Are you looking on our .com or .co.uk? We should have them in both locations.
Kirby do you ever get polish on your cuffs if so how do you get it out ?
I have had luck with basic dry cleaning getting the polish out -- but I try to be really careful.
Anyway to make shoes lighter?
Mr.Kerby is there a way to re-harden the toes of shoes if damaged?
Sadly there is not... it's one of the most fatal types of damage a shoe can sustain. We have a pair from Allen Edmonds that we used on the channel that has this same problem. If the shoe were bespoke, a bespoke maker could basically deconstruct the shoe and insert a new hard counter, but you'd never go through the trouble for a RTW shoe.
what causes this damage?
hi,what do I need to turn tan shoes to dark brown shoes, thanks
The best way is to use acetone to strip the wax finish off the shoes, then apply darker brown leather dye, then polish as usual. Best to practice this first on some shoes you don't mind losing, though.
I found your video while looking for the best way to "recreate" a Bass Kiltie Tassle loafer look. The Oxblood color was great for informal dress with khakis, but is no longer available. I was wondering about darkening the Dockers Antique Brown Men's Sinclair Kiltie Loafer. Any suggestions?
Hi I brought a shoe which is a size too big. I like the shoe. Pls let me know how to wear it?
Thanks
You can put a pair of our anatomic insoles in the shoe which will help reduce the fit by 1/2 size. Maybe wear with some thicker socks.
Sock come pretty thick these days. Also, you may want to not condition it anymore and let it dry out and shrivel up a tad.
I believe that’s the Sanford, not the strand
Can you deliver this Polish dawn to Nigeria becos I don't see it in our store here. And please let us know if we can be sales partner of ur brand becos will we love to promote it here, lovely product u av and what doe's it takes to be partner? Thanks for ur reply.
Much obliged just crossed my mind if a dark brown leather can be applied with a red hermes? Regards
The video is great but i didn't get the idea of you wearing a suit while doing this Btw thats a pretty nice suit.
Mink oil. Moving on.
Could you just use the shoe wax and not the cream?
Your before and after shot at 7:54 doesn't show any difference
What if you have cheaper shoes
The polish is good for cheaper shoes, too, but your cheaper shoes probably won't last as long as a pair of goodyear welted shoes with good quality leather.
As long as the grain is not corrected, you can really do a lot with a pair of shoes. What brand are they?
I have a pair of black Allen Edmonds but my brown wing tips are Stacy Adams bc I needed a pair of brown shoes so I didn't spend much money which I now regret
Haha, the “Saphir” way.
Looks down at my dirt, and manure covered boots..... lol
LOL. Respect for your work boots! Nothing better than a shoe well-worn!
@@kirbyallison Yes, sir. I ended up on your video, I was trying to learn how to darken leather, or stain it darker. Specifically for my Old Timer sheath. lol Your video helped though.
I appreciate the video, but this guy looks like he is trying to hard to appear sophisticated.
those shoes looked way better in original. sorry.
