Contrary to what Joey said, I think the fact that One Piece is in an anime-dominant era is actually the biggest reason it won't be as iconic. During Dragon Ball, that's really all we had, all we knew, all we grew up with (with the rest of the Toonami/Adult Swim anime as the supporting cast). Today, there's a billion other great anime readily available to casuals and otakus and everyone in between.
DB doesn't even compare with its contemporaries; it's just longer. The movie Anime scene in the 80s and 90s is pretty fucking stacked and that's their real competition. Most people didn't have cable.
Akira and Princess Mononoke were way more important than Dragon Ball due to VHS releases and Blockbuster.
One Piece's reach in the modern era hasn't been seen before. It's fucking massive.

Pikachu is definitely more recognized then Goku but besides pokemon Dragon Ball is absolutely the most globally known anime, far more then one piece. Its just a fact.

Easy answer, no. Dragon Ball is a cultural phenomenon around the world. In Mexico and Japan they REGULARLY have watch parties in stadiums and on crowded streets just for mundane episodes of the show. Even countries in Europe, the names escape me. I know they sometimes do it in Japan for one piece, but I’ve never heard of it happening anywhere else.
Ask any 50+ year old person who Goku is and who Luffy is, more of them will know goku. At least by 3-1. I honestly only know one person in actuality where im from that even watches the show. 💀

dragon ball is the most influential piece of shonen and the most famous anime outside of japan, the thing is that dragon ball super is mid and doesnt catches up with one piece right now, but if we are talking about iconic shonen, its gotta be dragon ball or pokemon.

Dragon Ball, DBZ in particular, is my earliest experience with anime, and it is so heavily tied to my childhood, so it has an unfair advantage. To be fair, One Piece has, and continues to, be so massively wide spread; it's reach growing every day. It's also done something that very few manga and/or anime have been able to do; and that's have a very successful, and generally well received, live action adaptation. Which in itself has led to many non One Piece fans becoming fans; in fact some of them are now checking out the anime & manga because of that.
the Live action will carry one piece success globally alot, the OPLA pulled more numbers than any anime individually in the last decade

Its also important consider whether one piece will land its ending. Its hard to fathom that it could fail, but theres been a lot of shonen jump series that were fantastic for the most part but crashed at the end

If we talk about iconic, as much as I think One Piece beats Dragon Ball in everything related to story, characters and world building... DBZ is just TOO HUGE, and it's basically the show that made people care about anime transformations. Even till this day, the Dragon Ball franchise generates around $24 Billion, One Piece is around $20 Billion. So yeah right now is Dragon Ball the more iconic one, but I agree with Garnt that One Piece IS the closest thing to Dragon Ball in terms of impact, just not quite there yet.
Crazy how much better One Piece has had to be just for close to the same revenue.

Gundam has more recognized Internationally.
The difference is Eva is such a unique show. I do agree gundam would probably appeal to more people but I feel there are a lot of other substations you could make for it. While for Eva I don’t think you would have near as many substations for its realisticly portrayal of characters and there complex study’s.
Also for the fact that we have multiple life sized gundam statues that exist in japan, whilst eva has none. Eva collabs a lot and releases a lot of merch with the other brands, but gundam has way more enthusiasts and it has so many gunplas and merch it creates by themselves. Gundam has like its own bubble, but that bubble is super big and it's very long lasting and very well known.

Time will certainly decide no matter how much some dragon ball fans want to huff that copium. If the finals saga lands, the live action remains good, and the story keeps getting more popular over time it could very much surpass it.

My big point, is dragon ball had nothing, except the ssj bardock special, the yo son goku special and video games, for 15 years and it stayed absurdly popular, the movies and super come out and it's constantly talked about, the Mangas been going but people have been begging for a new anime for almost 6 years now, other anime go just between seasons and they're never talked about, when one piece ends it'll be big yes, of course, but I give it a year or 2 after before people stop talking about it, meanwhile whether toei makes a new anime or not, people will always talk about dragon ball, and will always get people who haven't seen it before to watch it

It’s too long for regular people to get easily into and the powers, while more creative, are also way more complex. No one’s gonna be parodying Gear 5 in the same way Super Sayan gets referenced, simply because it’s too specific to be applied to any situation
Dragonball Z is like a religion in most of Central America, Goku was a mascot for the olympics for crying out loud. If you sat like 1000 10 year olds down and you asked if they knew one piece or dragonball 90% will say dragonball. Dragonball games are still selling amazing to this day, there are dragonball games which were some of the best of their generations.
One Piece is too difficult to get into, people will only know its name not its characters. Dbz has bigger games, bigger movies, bigger everything honestly.

Nobody cares about how well One Piece sells, no non-anime fan knows what it is compared to Dragon Ball. If I went to ask your grandpa what anime he knows, he's gonna 100% say Dragon Ball, not one piece. Obviously nobody's talking about Dragon Ball right now in terms of the anime scene, because everyone already knows it's out. We're talking about the franchise as a whole. Dragon Ball is way bigger than One Piece in both America and Japan, as well as most of the world. Casual Anime fans have no idea what one piece is, and will likely never watch it cause it has 1200 episodes and takes 10 years to watch. Plus, Ultra Instinct came out back in 2018 Dragon Ball Super was #1 on crunchyroll the entire year it was out, if Dragon Ball came out it would blow one piece out of the water. The only reason One Piece has so much sales also is cause it's dragged out and hasn't stopped circulation. Dragonball stopped being circulated in the 90s and has still sold a crap ton of copies in manga.
The only people who even care about one piece are just people who've been watching it since they were kids. Overhyped show with trash animation, will never surpass dragon ball as the biggest anime culturally / influence wise. One piece fanbase is a cult, they call the man Goda unironically. You criticize story elements and characters and there is always some excuse, they have projected themselves on to a flawed piece of art while pretending it does not have flaws and/or it has not fallen off, so if you criticize it it is like you are criticizing them.
Honestly very few manga if any are as time consuming as One Piece, so it becomes one of the only manga/work of fiction period that people get really invested in and don’t want to let go of. Kind of like Pokemon, if you criticize how it is now they’ll say “maybe you’ve grown out of it and it isn’t for you, these things have always existed and blah blah”, they blame it on you and act like there is nothing wrong with the story, that it’s YOUR fault.
The media attention around it comes off as a cult, and the story itself thrives off of hype with no substance. Eventually though this hype will crash and burn, and people’s views on the story will change dramatically. Other shonen were at least criticized or are being criticized during their downfalls, and over time get more favorable love or are looked back fondly. But if One Piece keeps declining without being criticized, the perception will change even MORE negatively once the series is finished and can be looked at in a broader lens.

Dragon Ball just needed to be on and it became people’s religion.
To get it out of the way, DBZ is clearly the more iconic franchise.
But this comparison doesn't make sense. We're in a completely different era of anime consumption. In the days of DBZ, no one cared about animation, there was nothing better to compare to and children care way less about that. Now the bar for animation has been raised to the moon, and expectations changed. Plenty of DB fans think Super is mid, one complaint being inconsistent animation.

That's because Dragon Ball had way less competition than One Piece does now. Anime was nowhere as mainstream back then compared to now. Average viewers are exposed to way more anime nowadays so it is much harder to have as much influence.
There’s people who don’t know what anime is or even watch/read anime/manga that know what dragon ball z is & know who Goku is. I don’t think you can say the same about one piece. Let’s not forget dragon ball z is still well known after all these years despite super being trash. Just the Mexican fan base alone for dragon ball is almost engrained into Latino culture it’s wild.
One Piece is currently at the peak of its powers and I'd argue it still has not come close to touching the global influence that Dragon Ball had and still has. For example and based on my anecdotal experience, the reveal of Ultra Instinct felt like it had a much greater impact than the reveal of Gear 5 had. I'd go as far as to argue that, globally speaking, Naruto has had a greater impact than One Piece.

Naruto has always been far more casual friendly than OP, and this is extremely important to make difference between mainstream legacy vs cult influence. Almost nobody knew OnePiece in the West in the 2000 to 2016, Naruto was the most known shonen at the time, this One Piece phenonema is relatively new, I would say, since Gear4 and Kaido's first apparition in the anime.
Before DBS, Dragon Ball never became less maintream than Naruto while not having an anime/ manga for 15 years , I don't see OP doing better than Naruto ever did against DB while DB has nowadays a manga and movies/ anime.

Your absolutely right, one piece just recently broke dragonball all time sales record. Like within the last few years. Dragonball is the Jordan of anime it's been on top for a very long time without going as far as one piece. If memory serves me right dragonball held the sales record since the mid 80's to like 2014 or 2015 over 40 years and mind you the anime was done in the early or late 90's and it ended in the US in 2001. One piece started on 1999 or 2000 after dragonball left a huge vacuum in the world in anime. So it took the big three to fill it so it took one piece until like 2015 to get the sales record while the manga and anime are still going. It's no where near close

I really don't feel DB is disrespected. I think honestly it's more of a case of times changing, tastes evolving and also the nature of DB today compared to what it was years ago because the thing is, One Piece has been one massive ongoing story that has still not reached its endpoint just because it's that dense and packed with content. DB ended and then it was brought back with stories that are taking place before the end of the manga and thus? It's kind of in a weird state where the fans of DB are still about it but many anime fans have just moved on.

You can argue that you might One Piece's story more , but you cannot compare ICON status, you need to go back and ready what ODA himself has said about Dragon Ball, the impact it had even to usher a new era of animes and Manga is huge. Also Dragon Ball DID trend on Twitter and Facebook during the Ultra Instinct transformation. Also the fact someone even discussed for a second that maybe Naruto did overtake One Piece for a second doesn't study the international layout, internationally One Piece eclipses Naruto at every stage many, manyy times over. Also the Dragon Ball movies have outperformed many of the One Piece movies in the modern era, a little bit of research goes a long way guys!

@@suned3128 It was also a completely 3D movie that people were apprehensive about before they even watched it. While Japan overhyped Film Red to ridiculous degrees. (Its a good movie but its nothing crazy) You can like One Piece more man thats fine, but its not more iconic its actually that simple.
It's far more iconic. There's a reason why One Piece, Bleach and Naruto are called the Big 3, with no Big 4 in sight. The deciding factor is characters. A compelling factor is how many characters you have in your top 100? I have like 20 Bleach, about 7 One Piece, 7 Naruto and just one from Dragon Ball, case closed.
PS: Spirited Away is good, Akira is good, but for some reason Grave of The Fireflights ends up recommend, it's not that good. For me Nauisicaa of The Valley of The Wind is better than all those 3 combined. Princess Momonoke is about good as Akira and Spirited Away for me.
PS: 2000 anime? My favorite anime of all time is in that category: Claymore. You kidding? No anime comes close, only Berserk maybe would've been if they hadn't cut the best 2 chapters of the manga out of the anime covered part of the story.

don't talk about when one pieces ends but when oda ends. we right now are in a time where al the things we know and that feel like they have been there fore ages were developed within THIS generation of people. what is going to happen when for the first time in human history the creator of pcs as we know them today dies, or what happenes when oda is no longer there to look after one piece. there is 0 precedent for that unless to want to compare this to things like mozart that to were influencial during their time and then even more afterwards

One huge thing Dragon Ball has going for it is that the manga is super simple to read (excluding Super). Meanwhile, you could hand me a fight scene from MHA, One Punch Man or even Jojo's Bizarre Adventure in the later parts and I couldn't tell you what's happening in them to save my life. DB is dated, sure, but the things it does well even nowadays are skimmed over too.

Ive watched both series from my childhood and although I like One Piece more a show, Dragonball has just been meer a global icon period. One Piece was never really that popular outside of Japan and was always a niche anime till recent years. But maybe the Netflix series will change that. Then again (and dear god I hope not), if the ending One Piece ending is bad then it deminished it popularity drastically.

One piece is way more popular, but DB is more iconic. It was the anime that made anime popular in the west, and anyone who is over 30 it was probably their first exposure to it.

No way. Dragon ball is THE ANIME. Plus less people are likely to get into One Piece with its over 1000 episode arcs than with Dragon Ball. Also the fights in dragon ball are better and far more iconic than the ones in One Piece. Just to give two examples Goku finally achieving Super Saiyan and dueling with Frieza on a dying planet and more recently him and Vegeta fused together with the powers of a god fighting against Broly with the might of a Legendary Super Saiyan. Need I say more? Also Goku is more likable than Luffy when last I checked.

Honestly I don’t think there will ever be a anime that’s more iconic than dragon ball (unless we count Pokémon) because you need to see the actual scale of it’s impact. People in Mexico were flooding streets and cinemas to watch Goku vs Jiren, plus the kamehameha, super saiyan and even ultra instinct are known by several generations. I think that’s the kicker, one piece isn’t known by multi generations in the way dragon ball is (at least not yet). The other thing is sooooooo many kids now a days and 20 years ago tried to go super saiyan 😂 whereas I can’t think of any other anime where kids tried to mimic a special move or transformation.
One Piece isn't as popular is mainly bc of 4kids getting it initially
