A couple years ago I was chatting with my 96 year old grandpa and I asked him what he was doing during WW2. He very casually said that he helped build the Alaska highway in 1942, and I also learned that he got skin cancer on his ear but he couldn't stop clearing. It took 8 months to complete and I learned the awful conditions they had to endure to complete the highway. "The northern winter was harsher than most of the soldiers had ever known or could have imagined. The summer brought sweltering temperatures, choking dust and bloodthirsty masses of mosquitoes and blackflies". This song is inspired by my grandfathers (and many others) experience building an urgent highway under horrible conditions.
