  • Keratoconus has devastated Larissa life for the past 15 years. She finally gets her life back with great vision after receiving scleral lenses from Dr. Sammy Hashemian and Dr. Thanh Mai of Islands Optometry and Insight Vision Center Optometry, respectively. The initial scleral lens fitting was challenging and led to mid-day fogging issues but once she was refit into a custom made scleral lens that was scleral topography guided (sMap3D) she could wear them all day long with no problems.

    I've had KC for over 30 years. Started around 1991 when I was 11. Unfortunately I haven't been very proactive in treatment/research, so after exhausting what I was told to be the only treatments available, I got a cornea transplant in 2010 when I was 30. That was the first time in years that I was able to see somewhat clearly with glasses. I didn't have the funds or insurance to properly take care of my KC, so I have just been getting new glasses every few years since the transplant. I recently made some life changes and am in a much better position to get proper treatment, so I just started researching what is available. I am excited to see if I can get better treatment and hopefully switch to contacts. I was told that I couldn't wear them after the transplant, but it sounds like there have been many changes and advancements in the last 13 years. Much of what I have been told since the beginning of this journey has changed. I'm glad to see that people with KC have much better options than I did when I was first diagnosed. I can't imagine how different my life would have been if I could have gotten crosslinking at the beginning.

    I understand how you feel, I went through the same thing right through high school I had this problem since I was 14 you kind of suffer in silence . In the first year of university I dropped out cz I was struggling to see what the tutor was writing on the board even though I had corneal implants I still struggled to see. My confidence plummeted in doing anything. I stopped driving & I still get nervous when I'm out shopping on my own seeing this vid has prompted me into looking at these lenses and seeing a optometrist that I haven't seen one in 10yrs. Hope your living a happy & full life👍

    Thanks a lot for sharing the insightful video. I was fine with Scleral lenses for 2 years but after that my lenses lost their moist. In the last few months I have been trying to fit new ones but no success yet. I am very scared since my keratoconus is very advanced. Base on your experience, is any chance that scleral lenses cannot work anymore for some eyes? Or, I have to look for a new optometrist? Thanks in advance!

      Hello Kia! We can't say of it will work or not however you may want a second opinion from an experienced scleral lens doctor. sclerallens.org/find-fitter/ is a great resource to find those who are Fellows of the Scleral Lens Society who have demonstrated expertise in this area. Try to find one in your area... and if you are in Southern California absolutely we'd love to see you!

    Hey I love your story! Iv had Keratoconus for 17 years now and iv been wearing piggyback lenses (soft&hard) for well over 15 years, I’m starting to get a lot of trouble with protein build up and ware time.Im searching for a new lens. Are these lenses any better? Thanks

    • @Insightvisionoc
      @Insightvisionoc  4 года назад +3

      Hi Brano! Every case is unique as you know. We will say that for most new patients with keratoconus we meet we are now fitting more scleral lens designs than piggyback design (Soft lens with a hard on top as you mentioned). However, the only way to know is to consult your eye doctor and have a discussion and potentially a trial fitting. If you are ever in our area we could certainly let you know! (we are in Costa Mesa, California).

    Will scleral lenses help with night vision halos and starbursts?
    I have done all operations for kerataconus but my night vision is still very bad
    Even though I wear glasses

    • @Yol805
      @Yol805 2 года назад +1

      @Irfaan Akoob Yes scleral lenses help with night vision. I just got my lenses about 2 weeks ago. I have 20/25 vision. I suffered so long. It started in my mid 20’s and I am 59 years old. I can drive at night. I can see clearly. I had a cornea transplant year ago. Didn’t help much. Eyeglasses didn’t help. I prayed to God to restore my vision. I went many doctors. I was introduced to Broward Eye Care by another Dr. I don’t want to ramble on scleral lenses work. I wanted to let you know if you are in the US medical insurance cover the lenses because it a medical condition. My lenses costed 2600 dollars. Only thing I paid was 55 dollars

      @@Yol805your situation gives me hope. Sounds similar to mine, except I'm a tad younger @ 43 years old. However, I was diagnosed when I was very young. Can't remember exactly when but it was somewhere around 10 years old. Had a transplant done in 2010 and I pretty much gave up on it since then. I have just been struggling with new glasses every 2 to 3 years and not being able to see very well. I just started looking today to see what has changed since then and I can't believe all the new treatments available. Lot's of changes since the late 80's early 90's that's for sure. I'm hoping I can finally get some help and some relief. Sick of wearing glasses, sick of headaches, sick of feeling like theres constantly something in my eyes, sick of not being able to see well at night.
