    Cause we see the parts of ourselves we try to ignore in them. A lot of people think Cassie is completely unrealistic with her obsessions on Nate but there are like a whole lot of woman out there who thirst over serial killers without any regard to their victims.

      exactly. i think we like to think we are better than other ppl. judging someone (even a fictional character) is a way to detach ourselves from what they're doing, it's a way of saying 'i'm not like that" when we feel that we could do it too. without talking about loving serial killers, I see some of Cassie in myself, i've seen some of Cassie in other women. i've done ridiculous things to get the attention of ppl that did not give a fuck about me. i think we all just look for love and affection and we do weird shit to get there. that's being a human. and Euphoria does an excellent job at portraying that.

      @@sandy-bc2to well it's not really true though? Other times people see themselves in characters that got betrayed and hurt by said flawed characters, or like someone's comment: people hate flawed characters for the situations they've created. You can't say everyone hates flawed characters because they see themselves in them lol.

      @@Kaastengels Obviously there are a whole lot of reasons and this is a good one too but I was replying to what this comment was saying, and I think it's a great part of it. But yes, a lot of times ppl hate the situation more than the character because they've been hurt the same way.

      Exactly. It reminds me of when recently (around 2020 I think) there was a bandwagon to hate on the character Tori Vega from the show Victorious. Ppl were saying “she’s such a boring character” in comparison to the other side characters and that she’s not that great of a singer just because her singing wasn’t at the same level of Ariana Grande’s. I thought it was ridiculous bc, I mean are these very same haters as interesting or exciting as the side characters that they praise above the main character? I honestly think they hated on her (Tori) bc her personality is the closest to their’s versus the other characters. People really do hate seeing themselves in these characters in films/tv shows

      yessss, the whole point of any piece of art is to show human traits - whether we judge them good or bad is just the reflection of our own existence. "perfect" characters don't add any value -- and these type of humans don't exist anyway. i wouldn't like to watch a show that doesn't make me question things.

      girl the misogyny of it all. we have so many anti-heros that are LITERALLY psychopathic men. LITERALLY out here killing, robbing, lying etc. And people support them all the way down. But god forbid a female character is unlikable or annoying. Because if this female character isn't likable whats her value? If she isn't approachable, relatable, or appealing to ME the viewer does she even have any value?
      It's crazy bc so many women internalize these messages. Of people needing to like you or find you appealing to have worth. Women are held to such a high moral/beauty standard and when they slip up they're crucified Meanwhile men can literally get away with murder and SA! And people will still be defending him...saying "he didn't mean it", "he's so young". Excuses we never make for women over far smaller flaws like cheating or white lies. We expect men to misbehave in a way we don't for women. ANd it's so sick.\

    Storytelling just needs authenticity. If the main protagonist is a manic pixie perfect dream person, it loses it's relatable connection. A flawed character holds more value, because people can see themselves in them.
    Cassie is flawed and heavily of course irritating to follow, but I like the rest, it's easy to emphasize with her because I feel at one point in time I was her.

    I think that we are really taught to navigate morally gray areas. We judge other and either good or bad and we do it to ourselves. The same reason we can cut someone off for we slip up is the same reason people keep abusive people around for years. We have a perception of people and we accept what confirms and justify people’s actions based on what they’ve been through. No one can tell you how to deal with someone you have to develop your own discernment and boundaries so you can navigate the gray on you own.

    Tbh I liked Ginny I mean she was entertaining lol and I think she is really realistic character. I wouldn't like my mother if I had to move all the time because of her bf, not being honest and someone telling me that she KILLED her ex husband oml I would not like my mother. Georgia is imperfect but she definitely deserves more respect from Ginny and Ginny needs to be more grateful . like the birthday party her mom throw her it was amazing but, she was being ungrateful . The fact that Georgia refused to make an honest days living and constantly put her black daughter at risk of being vulnerable because Georgia could have been arrested at any point. Yeah she totally married a predator because he was rich (instead of getting a fucking job), then kills said stepdad instead of just leaving, she steals from the mayor, etc etc. but wow how nice that she threw a cool party

    I think more so than people hating characters, it's about hating the situation that these characters bring about/cause. Like people hated Condola in Insecure, but it felt more like a LOT of people hated the events/situation she created because they've been Lawrence, or they lost a Lawrence to a Condola. Just like with Euphoria, everyone hates on Cassie, but that's because everyone can relate to a situation where a friend has committed a huge betrayal. You can see this in other tv/movies too. People hate Abuela in Encanto because they can relate to having an elder in their family putting them in a poor situation (Personally, I love Abuela and believe the hatred heaped on her is projection). Or people hate Ginny because she minimized Abby's feelings and everyone can relate to and dislike a person who put them in that situation.

I really agree with the idea that we are constantly idealizing people and that the way that we think they should act with us and others is always our blueprint to kick someone out of our lives and it is so sad and ruthless tbh. This video is so necessary. We have this weird fetish in our culture of with punishing people that are exactly like us. And it's so disturbing because they criticize the people they're most like...as a source of self hatred. Like people want a villain so bad. And they lack the self awareness and self reflection & ENDURANCE to be able to realize THEY may be the bad guy. ANd their zealous attempts at crucifying someone else could be projection and an attempt to kill that part of themselves they hate.

      @@Kaastengels Well yeah. I hear what you're saying. The problem is media shapes people's worldview. Science tells us if you see Rue do drugs, doesn't mean you'll go out and start sniffing coke. But your FEELINGS around drugs might change. People are influenced by what they watch.
      So if people can watch a show and feel hate towards someone like Rue, they probably won't have empathy for addicts irl. Same with Cassie.

    Hating flawed characters with bad writing is different from hating flawed characters with good writing.
    Season 1 of Euphoria has flawed characters with good writing and a overarching plot. Season 2 has flawed characters with no meaningful writing that adds to a missing plot and just leads to unnecessary drama. Characters should be flawed but with a purpose rather than soap opera drama, unnecessary sex scenes, and reverting characters. You can tell Sam Levinson rewrote all the episodes except episode 5 (which was the best episode by far) to add screen time to characters who don’t need it. He had a paper that he started early but decided to redo the whole paper a day before it was due.

She couldn't stop herself from flirting awfully with every single boyfriend all of her friends had. Some forgave, some didn't. I did. I stayed. What she does next? She lies, manipulates and ditches everyone because they figure out her game so she wasn't getting all the attention she thought she needed. We stayed. What happens next? Let's say someone really really close to me passes away. What she does? Asks me to call her because she has covid. What do I do? Call her and ask hey do not worry you will be fine, support support support. What does she say to me? "you can't put this down because of your loss, move on, you don't have to compare everything to your loss". Which I didn't even mention in that call. What do I do? B*tch bye for fucking ever. Judge me all you want. Patience has its limits. One thing is to be nice another is to be stupid.

    I love flawed characters in stories. They feel more relatable for that reason. I notice that in fantasy and dystopian novels. They are forced to do something we or they wouldn’t naturally do, but we understand why they did that.
    I love Blair as a character in Gossip Girl. She does many bad things, but she has her good qualities too. We respect that she is a hard worker who will put her time, energy, and effort to get what she wants, but she still has to compete with those who don’t. I like her friendship with Dan because that taught her that she does not need to play games with people all of the time.
    She also grew when she rekindled her relationship with her mother.
    The problem with flawed characters comes from a writing standpoint. I begin to hate flawed characters when they become hypocrites. If they acknowledge this or gets called on it and we actually see them change, fine. Whatever. We all do hypocritical things sometimes and we need to learn from them.
    Where I get mad is when the characters never acknowledge their mistakes or never apologize for them and these are the characters that we are supposed to be rooting for.
    For example, in Ginny and Georgia, Ginny keeps yelling at her mom and blaming other characters for her problems and never acknowledging her mistakes. I get narratively, the show is showing how she is turning into her mom and Ginny does recognize that, but instead of working in herself and trying to do better, she repeats her same patterns. I felt she never grew which is why I did not love her character that much.
    I also felt bad for her friend (forgot her name) because Ginny keeps using being half black as a crutch for her problems when she keeps rejecting black people. This felt hypocritical to me. I am not testifying to her experience. I do not know anything about it, but that was something that many of us noticed.
    I started rooting for her in the end when she left home because she feared for her and her brother’s life. That seemed to make her more endearing and relatable because we can understand where that decision came from.

    I love flawed character as long as it is done authentically. I don’t like when characters are made to do “stupid” things only for the pure intention to add “edge” to a show/movie. You can usually tell the intention/nature (well at least I can). I’ve always appreciated Euphoria for example for making realistic or rather “justifiable” (although exaggerated) non black & white flawed characters. The “stupid” things the characters of Euphoria do, enhances the plot itself. Yes some of their mistakes are annoying but overall it’s justifiable and enjoyable to witness because it gets people talking the complexities of the characters. A good/memorable story challenges beliefs and blurs the lines of who are the protagonist and antagonist (in a way characters can be both).

    As someone who grew up without a father, Cassie’s father leaving her is not an excuse. Also I’m a black woman. On top of my father abandoning me, I also experienced racism and colorism. I was also a victim of sexual trauma by a guy I thought was my friend. Just like Cassie, I also had a best friend who was a victim of domestic violence and as soon as I found out about the abuse I called the domestic violence line for help. I would NEVER mess with her ex boyfriend. I did seek male validation when I was a teenager but NOT to the expense of my best friend. I don’t care if people get mad at me for saying this but white women get more sympathy for their actions more than women of color. I never got sympathy for my father abandoning me. I have mental issues as well. I suffered with anxiety, depression, and suicide since I was 15. I was told by my own family and ex friend that I need to just get over it, stop playing the “ victim”, and be a strong black woman.

      Maybe in real life situations white women do get more sympathy, but if you compare rue to Cassie, literally everyone hates Cassie but feels sorry for rue even tho they’ve both hurt people around them. Maybe you’ve had a similar upbringing as Cassie but your experiences still aren’t the same. Even though what she did was wrong and there IS NO EXCUSE there is an explanation. She was vulnerable and Nate preyed on that. She never did it to hurt maddy but rather fill a void in her lowest moment. I can relate a lot to Cassie, although never sleeping with a best friends ex I know the extent I would go to to feel love and validation. I’d damage my own well-being to be loved by a man- I am still working on that but the thing is you have to understand that these situations aren’t black and white. Cassie, just like I, is blinded by the desperate need to feel loved. Just because you’d never do something doesn’t mean others are horrible for doing the same- unless it comes to serious crimes of course.

And got caught at the wrong place at the wrong time and got threatened into doing fentanyl. Rue literally has a dual diagnosis and that’s less understanding than daddy issues? Half the country has daddy issues and still don’t betray their friends like that. It’s honestly because she’s pretty, white, blonde and a good actress. People will attack you for noticing reality.

    It's more than just having a bad/negative moment... It's what you do & how far you are willing to go in that negative state of mind. It's about how much self control you extend in the heat of the moment.
    It's one thing to yell out "I hate you!!" (Which is nasty, don't get me wrong) & it's a whole other thing to put someone or say something they confided in you that's traumatic & you say "you deserved every beating you got from your parents because you're a selfish bitxx!"
    You see what I mean? & those are the kind of lines that "show your true colors" but people LOVEEEEEE to blurr those lines & get this conversation all the way twisted.
    I don't believe that's what you are doing by any means but I'm leaving this comment here because what I just typed out are very common scenarios/thought processes.
    Anybody that is willing to allow their own insecurities/trauma get in the way of keeping their morally good composure when things are really bad & so heated y'all are in the depths of hell 😅.... Then you really need to re-evaluate your relationship to that individual. Because I am 27 years old & I've battled this very topic for years now & I came to the conclusion that.... A person is not losing control & making a mistake... They are in fact revealing their vile TRUE nature... It took a lot to come to grips with that.. but let me give you an example...
    Even in the heat of the moment when I was on the receiving end of the beating/physical & or verbal abuse/unprovoked targeted harassment/ETC ETC... even in my despair or anger I didn't even have thoughts like the example I gave earlier... The worst I have ever thought is "I hate you"... But even that isn't a common thing...
    So you really have to wonder & ask yourself what kind of individual even has those truly nasty thoughts about deeply evil & horrific trauma that the individual you're having an issue with has experienced & wanting to throw it at them in such a way.
    You really have to wonder in general with people who have thoughts when they are angry at someone where they are willfully & deliberately thinking about someone's secrets & twisting it so you can retraumatize them some more & emabrass & bring them further down...
    Once I finally allowed myself to admit this is truly just as low down as it sounds... It's helped me to identify the covert narcissists much easier than before with my blinders on.
    I see the good in people but the bad cannot so heavily outweigh the good... Remember that!

    In my opinion, Ginny and Cassie are very flawed but in the different ways like :
    Cassie was disliked by most of people because she was meant to be like that, she has been through due to her trauma with her father right but it wasn’t an excuse to do shitty things but this is what the writers wanted to show us, her actions weren’t glamorized or normalized bc then everybody called her out her bullshit. She’s very complex and that’s makes her a very realistic and well written character.
    Ginny on the other hand, was very very dislikable just, seeing every scene with her make me sick and cringe af. She’s literally the embodiment of « I’m not like others girls », she’s rude to everyone for no reason. She brings racism to everything for her own avantage and the writers think it’s normal. I don’t even know how 2 stupids dudes fell in love with her, just... how ? Okay she has been through with her trauma anyway, that’s not a excuse to treat people like crap. And the worst thing is the writers idolized her behavior and tried so hard to make us feel bad for her and except us to sympathize with her. Her storyline was an another wattpad fanfic. She is one of the worst main characters I ever seen.

      I love your analysis on Cassie. Spot on what I was thinking. I have to disagree (kindly of course) on Ginny. They made it a point to show Ginny have trust issues due to moving around because of the choices Georgia had to make due to her less than stellar upbringing which made her need to go on the run to survive. It is Ginny's defense mechanism to be mean and distance herself by being cold since she isn't used to having friends or people be interested in her. The scene where she discusses her racial identity with Hunter who also discusses his own racial identity challenging Ginny's fight with the world is not something I commonly get to see (in the scene it appears both are trying to find out who has struggled the most with their respective racial identity). I will say I can understand the cringe because I had to pause that scene a couple of times to self reflect on what they were even arguing about because I don't identify racially with their struggles, but have a lot of friends who do and that is how I resonated with their characters having conflict that is independant from their romance issues. Ginny does things that I disagree with, that evokes frustration, I just disagree that there aren't any reasons behind her mean girl to pop out.

    • @johanaforever965
      @johanaforever965 2 года назад +1

      @@malbano I totally respect your opinion but the thing is, she never acknowledged her mistakes or haven’t any repercussions for her actions even when she was rude to her mother and then Georgia confessed to her that she was raped and molested when she was younger and Ginny was shocked a time but the next day, she’s still became rude to her mom as if nothing had happened like wtf ? How can you have so much lack of empathy ? She didn’t even apologized and the writers keep to idolizing her, this is so messed up.

      @marialuisaoliveira1009 2 года назад +1

      @@johanaforever965 I think what a lot of people fail to see with Ginny and the way she treats her mom is that Georgia created that environment and situation. She wasn’t a parent, she was a friend. She never taught Ginny to deal with her problems, she taught her how to run away and not deal with consequences. And all the anger and frustration that Ginny manifests now is just a build up from that. I do agree that writing isn’t the best on the show, they tried to paint Ginny as this woke sort-of character that I think would do really well in 2016, but now it’s just cringe.

    • @prettygirl6994
      @prettygirl6994 2 года назад

      @@johanaforever965 Cassie has also never held herself accountable for her actions either. She was more scared of getting beat up by Maddy than losing a friendship. Even after she tries to attack Lexi to try take the heat off of her. Although Ginny and Georgia had its flaws, it clearly had a theme of “Like Mother, Like Daughter”. Everything Ginny was doing Georgia already did. Hence why Ginny was messing with hunter and Marcus at the same time, while Georgia was messing with that mayor and baby father.

    I forgot to put this.
    The MCU fits the bill when we talk about why we loved flawed characters. Each hero and even villain has a motive or a purpose that we can relate to. They struggle to make that dream a reality.
    The heroes strive to do good even when they unintentionally are responsible foe innocent lives being taken (the sokovia accords). They even battle each other because they both have valid, but different reasons why they should or shouldn’t be against the accords. Captain America was protecting his friends. Iron Man was trying to do right buy the people he took.
    Each character, even Loki has an arc that redeems them.
    We sympathize with the villains because they each have a valid reason for doing what they do.
    Take Thanos. He wants a better world even if it means many lives being taken in the process. He worries they will never survive if they don’t take drastic measures. While we don’t fully agree with him, we understand him

  • @jadia5196

    I think its therapeutic to hate on flawed characters because they're not real and often times the audience member sees themselves in the flawed character and since you can't really take the anger out on yourself you take your anger out on someone who 'isn't real'. I can hate on Cassie all day but I'd be lying if I said I didn't see bits of myself in her.

    Yes, the best characters are flawed. Or live in a flawed world. Period. Just look at Donald Duck (flawed) or Mickey Mouse (lives in a flawed world). Do you watch Atlanta? I love the characters, because they repeatedly make the wrong decisions or are thrown into some messed up situations. Either or it pretty much explains the human condition. No one is perfect and the world we live in is hella f'ed up. So you might as well accept that you have no control when things don't go your way and that you are only human when you are at your lowest. That's why being a celebrity is so damn hard, because one day you are praised and put on a pedestal, the next you are thrown under a bus and become a scapegoat. So you better keep it low key or you will be eaten by the masses. Just look at Kanye West, J K Rowling and the latest Will Smith. Would love to hear your take on Atlanta; the newest season 3 is streaming now.

I’m not saying we’re all going around showering in eight balls and sleeping with BFF exes, but I’m sure we’ve all displayed our own moments of selfishness, deceit, ignorance, gluttony, etc. TV highlights their flaws in very grandiose ways but when we stop “hating” them I think we can learn a lot of lessons about ourselves through them.

Sis has no self-esteem and is obsessed with Maddie she basically wants her whole life they’ve had the same disadvantage of coming from a “broken” or “dysfunctional” Family. The reason Cassie did what she did it because she was always going to do that she never liked Maddie she couldn’t stand her because somehow she was still better off than her and still well liked by everyone around her and she always got whatever guy she wanted. It was never just about Nate she wanted to be just like Maddie I want she’s willing to put herself down and be with a guy who will mold her into what he wants simply for the attention and love that’s my take🧐

      Everyone’s standards seem so low, I guess we’re all used to people doing shitty things and don’t expect more. It’s one thing to watch a character and think they’re entertaining because they’re “flawed” and another to have those same toxic behaviors happen to you in real life, we need to stop tolerating and normalizing abusive situations.

    • @kaialove2418
      @kaialove2418 2 года назад +2

      No one is saying not to set boundaries between yourself and toxic behaviours or accept their bad behaviour, the point is it’s not really your place to label people as being good or bad as we’ve all made mistakes. There’s a little more nuance to humans than just good or bad, empathising and understanding their actions doesn’t mean you agree with them or their actions. For some they’re in denial and refuse to see their faults and by all means, set your boundaries, but there’s a huge difference between doing bad things and having bad intentions. You don’t have to like everyone but just remember you’re probably the bad guy in someone’s story 🤷🏽‍♀️
