True, the narration is over the top, especially the big smooch to Leo... But the footage is remarkable, you have to admit.

total propaganda. realized that to film in the soviet union in the 70s, he needed permission. and in order to get permission, you gotta praise old Leonid. nothing about the Chechens or Kalmyks rebelling against the Soviets, nothing about the mass expulsions of ethnic groups by Stalin. and to be honest, not a whole lot of information in comparison with other videos on the subject.

No matter how fast the panzers got there the soviets always had the option of "scorched earth" and made sure the refining facilities were so destroyed it would take a year (That Germany didn't have) to get them up and running.

Thecpropaganda part here is no worse then in american war documentaries, it's just with a diverent bias.
And about the few mentions of Leonid brezhnev, yes he was a minor figure in this campaign, but so was Georg Washington for most of the french and Indian wars, apart from the very beginning, and still every american doc about said war manage to mention him every other minute.
And if your argument for mention washington is that the french and indian wars hat a huge impact on to his Charakter and career you are right but it can be assumed that ww2 hat just as much impact on Leonid brezhnev.
Folks the propaganda is there true but it really is no worse than most western docs. Just the viewpoint is diverent from what you are used to and for that reason you are able to notice it here.

I remember this series in the early 70’s when I was a kid. I didn’t realize all the Red propaganda in it back then. It was still entertaining thou. I’m curious why Burt Lancaster took the gig.

He agreed to this "the gig" as you put it, to counter the historical revisionism that has emerged in the Western world, which portrays the United States, along with Britain and France, as victorious over fascism.
They opened a second front on June 6, 1944, when they realized that the USSR could win.
