Cook was an explorer not a colonizer, sounds like Rawiri would rather the Portuguese had colonized Aotearoa/NZ back in the day instead? THAT would've really been bad for Maori as they would have been completely wiped out with NO treaty included.

Therefore all modern day Maori who happen to have been born here in NZ, are indigenous just as i and my family are also indigenous to NZ. You are correct in saying ancient Maori were not indigenous to this country as they came from somewhere else, the origins of which are somewhat vague.

But times have changed and we need better solutions and better leaders to unite us nor separate us.

I totally understand how this group feels. But when you create a contract, the time to enforce it is on day 1. Looking at something that was not maintained a 100+ years later, is going to be a mess. You cannot expect people who were born into freedom of choice, to relenquish their individual sovereign rights, so that an issue 'your' ancestors created, is somewhat resolved. There must be another way. If co-governance was implemented, the 'issues of veto' will cause a complete failure of democracy for all. Fundamentally, co-governance is not possible. We hear your voice, but you ask for too much. We are here to protect 'everyone' not just the few.

@tsa3b I am saying that in the pre colonial time this country was not the utopia claimed but full of raiding parties, slavery, some areas cannibalism. Life is a little better for all of us now. What does piss me off is maori's attempt to rewrite their history when they should embrace it, accept it, and move on like the rest of us as we live in an age of enlightenment with all the wrongs coming into the light and unfortunately a lot of your people are living in the past and are getting left behind with the victim mentality. Their homes and lands were rented but they had nowhere to go. That happened around the 1800 mark during the Scottish Land Clearances. @@Duckz558 Depends on how far back you go. Slavery has certainly been a thing with every (?) culture, but the British eliminated most of it. Not so sure about the cannibalism or infanticide; don't recall that being a thing in most cultures. At the very least most cultures had eliminated most of those atrocities by the time the British colonised NZ.
