I agree, Winston makes a very good point. All of New Zealand can listen to Parliament TV. If 95% of the country cant understand it then it shouldn't be allowed unless they provide sub titles
Gerry Brownlee seems to be very competent as Speaker...
I'm a Labour Party member and actually agree with you. Gerry Brownlee is also the Father of the House, having served the longest (consecutively) so this role really suits him.

Get a proper life Debbie, Winston is the man, and also newzealand has spoken, they have who they want in government, and THANK GOD FOR THAT
Winston is a wizened excuse of a man. He's just a bitter, twisted man who talks and talks trash and has nothing of substance.

Yes and we don't HAVE to all learn Maori. I'm not Maori and don't mind using the colloquial words but not learning whole sentences. It's not of interest to my daily life. I don't mind who learns the language though. 😀
If you're Maori and want to learn and use te reo, that's fine. It doesn't change that the MAIN language is English. There's no Maori parliament, just MP's.
It's still the UK who the MP's swear allegiance to in the new parliament.
We live under the King's parliament by law. The police too serve the King and not NZ citizens as I recall.
what about the stupidity of the government who are a load of rubbish and need to stop being a bunch of idiots.

Funny that Halfwiti spoke English when asking if he could repeat his question. That clown wasted a lot of unnecessary time
Thank heavens for the presence of Winston Peters in the House of Representatives.
English please, I think in 2023 it’s ridiculous that parlement are not speaking a language that everyone can understand. The party is just disruptive and there are other challenges and more important things to discuss than this nonsense.
Just ignore them it's that simple
just don't pay those disruptive MPs with tax payers money. They are useless.
parliament please.
So in theory, if there were members of the House that couldn't speak English, you would be against the use of English as well, given that you think "it’s ridiculous that parlement are not speaking a language that everyone can understand."
They are trying to keep their language and culture alive, and using it in everyday life is one way to ensure that. There are countless examples of languages and cultures that have been swallowed up and vanished because they were allowed to.
I agree that he was being disruptive to prove a point, but the House has workarounds through the translation system. It's not that big a deal.
Now, if they tried to force all members to debate in te reo, I would be against that. But that's what they see on their side, being forced to use a language not their own, not out of necessity (the translation system exists, so there is no need for them to speak English) but out of some people's discomfort with te reo.
I voted NZFirst, and I am so happy about the result. More power to Mr Peters and the current government.

To Marama Davidson's question...The last Government chose time after time to refuse to answer questions with the line " I refute the premise of the question " She never objected then . ..If every MP chose to ask questions in their own native tongue ,knowing that few would comprehend the language , it would defeat the purpose of Q and A .
But Māori is an official language alongside English and New Zealand Sign Language, even a couple from National have replied on occasion in Te Reo Māori (Hekia Parata, Harete Hipango etc) There are provisions in place so that when Māori is spoken, translation will be provided by an accredited translator via earpiece. The question isn't whether te reo should be allowed to be spoken in the House, rather if a Minister can decline to answer a question based on the fact that it was asked in Māori. Maybe those who wish to speak Te Reo in the House should indicate it when they first come into parliament thereby notifying other members of the House to have their earpiece ready whenever those speakers stand. It's not hard, and Winston Peter's chooses to get into these types of altercations because he knows who his most loyal voters are and how to appease them
@@CallemJayNZ But parlliament is a place where debates are conducted and many Kiwis who are watching will not understand the language for we are a land of immigrants. All these threaticals and drama is making us a joke in the global world for parliament sessions are watched on a global stage.

Go Winston!
OK - I'm a NZ citizen living overseas and keen to watch what is going on in parliament now that we have a new government However, I do not speak Maori so I question why a member of the opposition should ask a question in Maori when there is no bi-lingual facility in place for non Maori speaking NZ citizens to understand the question? It seems somehow elitist or even racist to me to exclude a large part of the public from the discussion, does it not?
I too am mixed race. When i was at school in NZ we got punished for speaking any Maori. Consequently I dont speak Te Reo as it is now called. Yet, nearly all my family members in Aotearoa/NZ do speak Te Reo. After a 3 year absence I went “home” to be with whanau and never have I felt so much like a foreigner. I didn’t understand many of the signage in Te Reo - yes a stranger in my homeland feeling very disconnected
So maybe it should be asked if they can add subtitles rather than asking to not korero Māori!
@@MsLorna69what for we all speak English
And I think they know very well that most people watching, let alone the members of Parliament, cannot understand Maori and she is using it as a weapon against any that stand in her way.
Not to mention the humongous Tiki. Looks absolutely ridiculous and doesn't do anything for her cause. Actually has the opposite effect. Should other members come adorned in their ancestral dress? Any Kilts? Etc.
FFS We don't understand a bloody thing with full Maori being spoken in parliament when they all can speak English? I feel it is being done to try and provoke rather than to assist in proper debate!
They're embarrassing themselves... so very childish.
On language.... Gimme a break! I don't understand Maori or know sign language. How many kiwi's do? English is OUR common language. If an Indian Kiwi was a minister, would he choose to speak in Indian? How many of us would understand that? I'm getting over this BS and besides it wasting valuable time on having real debates and solving issues...
Native birds don't understand any language. The vase majority of New Zealanders speak English (and only English).
Be like many of the people out there learn Te Reo and they are loving it. Maybe you should go and live in England
@@eileenshults4095many people are not learning Maori language - it’s being superimposed on everything and rammed down people’s throats. It’s not a grass roots movement and there are virtually no native speakers. No need to live in England - New Zealand is an Anglophone country.
What are “kiwi’s” (and what’s with the use of a possessive apostrophe). If you mean New Zealanders - about 2% of them understand it (and that’s as a second language).
And this is why nothing ever gets done .
Agreed.. distractions and time wasting.. they are all part of the problem
More points of orders than sensible questions?
For those whinging let them speak Maori most of their voters dont understand so its going to hurt them eventually 😂
90 day trials only punish bad workers, the rest of the workforce wants someone that should be fired to be fired, the people that have to show up to a job to keep their benefit are largely useless. Winston raised a very good point, this is our government, the New Zealand government and by far the majority of people in this country speak English, everyone in that house speaks English and only use Maori language to try and be a smart ass. If they want to use Maori Language then it needs to also be in subtitles underneath so the majority of people can understand what is being asked or answered.
Yes and no, 90 days gives more power to bussiness owners to get quick short term casual labour, job could be labelled long term, but really it isn't, being a good employee or not, unfortunately will still get let go, I'm also for employer having power, bad weeds are harder to weed out of the workforce.
Wrong 90 day trials affect everyone. That was proved multiple times last time big companies over 20 employees had that right sacking multiple people at knock off time on the 89th day.
Time and time again it came up on social media chats of it happening to people especially young people
