My dad took me to see Roy at a county fair. He closed the set with Under The Double Eagle. As an aspiring, young guitar player, it ruined my life and I thank him for it every day. RIP Roy.
To my parents, Roy Clark was the absolute benchmark of a guitarist...I don't care who I asked them to listen to...Hendrix, Page, Zappa, Santana, Clapton, Beck, the response was always the same: "He's alright...But he ain't no Roy Clark!" One time my brother and I were watching Roy on t.v....I had started to play by then, and I said something like: "He's pretty good, but he needs more sustain"...I thought my brother was gonna lay me out: "Roy Clark knows what he's doing!" About ten years later, I suddenly realized: "You know, I think he was right...Roy Clark knows what he's doing"...
Supposedly someone asked one or two of the people you listed about the best player and they referred the questioner to Roy Clark. However, Glenn Campbell......

Gatemouth and Roy put out an album in the early 80's called making music... Still one of my favorites. They were having so much fun you can hear them smiling!
Roy Clark, gone but not forgotten! We have numerous recordings and television shows. He was the most versatile guitar player, he could play in all genres, any and all stringed instruments. He was even better than Ricky Skaggs. Roy Clark was and is the gold standard of stringed instrument players. He was unparalleled among studio musicians, and knew how to arrange a track for the studio anytime, anywhere, ever ready to pick up his guitars, for pleasure or for pay. He helped thousands of musicians start their careers as studio musicians, then spotlighted their talents for others to enjoy. A man among men, Roy Clark, you made a young boy's heart swell with music when you played guitar for others to enjoy. I grew to love all manner of music as I was growing up because of your talent and persuasiveness with guitar. Rest In Peace, Roy Clark. Your works will live on though your body decays your talent will entertain millions upon millions of people. Because of your love of music and entertaining, your name will forever last in the annals of Country Music, Blues Music, The Rock and Hall of Fame and many other places dedicated to entertainment. To your family, your extended family, friends, and colleagues, I offer my heartfelt condolences for the loss of father, grandfather, uncle, brother, friend, colleague and most of all a great man.
This is a beautiful eulogy for a beautiful human. From a worldly standpoint it seems just too bad that such folks have to leave the rest of us behind. I believe, though, that he has earned his heavenly reward.
James Chisholm, thank you for your kind words. Roy Clark was one of my heroes when I was growing up. Hee Haw was my first exposure to Roy. And from there I grew to know Roy's body of recordings and videos. I am saddened by his loss and I know that He will be missed by one and all.
@@journeyer58 I was listening to Roy before there was Hee Haw, he was my inspiration and the person that I copied the most on the guitar. The guitar that he plays on this video is a Gibson Byrdland, it was designed for Gibson by two other pickers. One was Billy Byrd, he played for Ernest Tubb and others. The second was a guy named Hank Garland, he was a star picker and played for Elvis early on. He made a song called the Sugarfoot Rag and others. That guitar was named "Byrdland" for the two guys that designed it for Gibson. Billy Byrd and Hank Garland. Expensive guitar, about 11 thousand dollars or more these days.
My Husband had the pleasure of meeting Gatemouth Brown at a Concert in San Antonio, Texas when he lived there. Rest in Peace Roy Clark, we will never forget you. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
RIP! As a small child you gave me my first taste of guitar, watching Hee Haw with my dad. So sad to hear the news today...you will always be remembered!
Every person on that stage are stellar musicians. The pedal steel player, Cal Freeman (RIP) was a friend of mine. One of the best Imo. Roy and Gatemouth were feeling so good that night, they pretty much ignored the song list 😆 And they all still put on a helluva show.
Roy Clark-One of the greatest guitar pickers and entertainers, ever! It all started on a Sears Silver Tone guitar! Roy and Gatemouth Brown and band are incredible as well! -Ken Nelson
Gatemouth Brown and Roy Clark were 2 of my dad's favorite guitarists. Both had long careers, and could play their butts off! I worked a Gatemouth show in the early 90's, and got to play his old Firebird at sound check, and it was a total delight (tuned in open D). My dad was SO impressed.
I saw Gatemouth at a blues festival about twenty three years ago, got his autograph on the festival poster! Never saw Roy Clark live, but I have admired his talent since I was a kid. Awesome talent!
Incredible guitar playing and backed up by Gatemouth!, you can see that Gatemouth is in awe of his playing, one of the best, maybe the best, will be surely missed. 🎸👏🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵
I'd like to take a moment - and hope you'll all join me in saying: Mr. Roy Clark, thank you for your music & thank you for your life. I got to see you play live. I got to shake your hand, (very briefly, after the show) You even bought a song from me. (Through his publisher, although Mr. Clark did listen to it & made the decision personally, I'm told. I got $3,500 cash + he let me keep 1/2 royalties. That's unheard of! Of course, I've never heard it recorded yet. Maybe I will do it in your honor.) I say without reservation - Because of you, sir, I got to cross 3 Big Things off my bucket list. May you truly Rest In Peace. Peace. JR
Roy Clark, such a great professional musician. Wonderful to watch him over the years. No one could ever take your place. I hope all of the Legends, that are in Heaven have welcomed you.
I knew it was an old song, but this is the first time I've heard it played by someone besides the Dead. Very cool! Also I've been a RoyHead since I was a kid watching Hee Haw. The man can play anything with strings and sings geat too!!! RIP Roy😊
Great post, thx so much!!! Cool to see one of the players that clearly influenced Danny Gatton. Especially in the showmanship department! Both were phenomenal talents
Besides being a great picker, Roy's sense of humor was just awesome. I remember seeing him on the original "Beverly Hillbillies" show wearing a horrible checked suit and bright yellow shoes. He also had a record on the Country/Western charts once, called "Thank God and Thank Greyhound She's Gone." He was an original, and will be missed.
That is one sweet Gibson Byrdland that Roy was playing. Wish I could afford one. I've got a couple of Gibsons, but not one of those. RIP Roy, I hope you and Chet Atkins are making music in heaven.
I have that same exactly 10 gallons brown Sombrero cowboy hat the bass player is wearing .... that’s very 70’s Charlie Daniels era and style , I got huge acervo of those vintage cowboy clothing that’s my treasure , people used to come to my house and say “someone here is stuck in the 70’s/80’s “ Sure I am as this the best era ever ...
what is the name of the guitar gatemouth plays? i've never seen one before, it has a body like a jaguar but clearly isn't one, is it some kinda frankenstein guitar?
I have seen a few of him playing with Glenn Campbell, but only 2 or 3, always wondered why they did not play together very much, you know, tour together and so on. And I never heard them, or anyone else for that matter, compare them. Some say Roy was the better at strumming, not sure how they compared at picking. Just me, comparing voices, Roy had a much finer voice in his youth than any credit he ever got. Seems to me he spent too long in "joke acts" instead of touring as a fabulous singer, and picker/strumming player, but that may be do to the fact that I am limited to "RUclips" and so I don't really know. I know this, I loved the guy.
I read that many years ago this kid in Louisville Kentucky from some high school, don't know which because they have a lot, invited Gatemouth to play at their prom for a nominal fee or something. Can't remember the details but evidently it happened. If someone knows what I'm talking about or if I dreamed this, please let me know.
I've always liked and enjoyed Roy Clark but was never super impressed by his playing... Until watching this. Funny how he did all that great fret work and nobody made a peep until he did something really simple where his right hand moved fast, then the audience goes crazy.
This was so much fun I played Bass on this show
Are you serious !
Wow. Such respect for you. This is real music. ✌️♥️
You did damn good!
Awesome! I was just diggin' the bass line when I read it. Much respect.
Great job! Was that a Fender Bassman?
No effects, no pedals, no distortion to hide behind. Just honest country expert picking.
My dad took me to see Roy at a county fair. He closed the set with Under The Double Eagle. As an aspiring, young guitar player, it ruined my life and I thank him for it every day. RIP Roy.
I have played music for 50 years. Roy Clark is one of the greatest pickers of all time. Believe me I have seen a few.
God-like ability without the God-complex. A legendary musician. Rest in peace, Mr. Clark and thank you for the inspiration!
Simply the best. RIP
RIP. They don't makem like this anymore.
How would you know?
Hee Haw
don't be a dick peter (see what I did there?)

hey imagine if did get more sustain!
Listen to your bro Dude!!
My parents were the same
I love Roy!!!!
Supposedly someone asked one or two of the people you listed about the best player and they referred the questioner to Roy Clark. However, Glenn Campbell......
Pound for pound one of the all around best guitar players ever !
And thars quite a few pounds thar.
There's a little pickin' and grinnin' goin' on up in heaven tonight :) Thanks Roy and God bless

Back when Austin City Limits was worth watching.

I got blisters just watching that.
Wow I was born in 64 this was such a treat. You can feel and see the sweat ,good good stuff. About as tight as you can get ,,,fun !!!
Every person on that stage are stellar musicians. The pedal steel player, Cal Freeman (RIP) was a friend of mine. One of the best Imo.
Roy and Gatemouth were feeling so good that night, they pretty much ignored the song list 😆 And they all still put on a helluva show.
Absolutely - but they should have fired the sound engineer.
Top of the list gutair player so underrated what a true entertainer God bless you left a huge legacy
Roy Clark-One of the greatest guitar pickers and entertainers, ever! It all started on a Sears Silver Tone guitar! Roy and Gatemouth Brown and band are incredible as well! -Ken Nelson
Roy Clark was a beast on guitar...and several other instruments. He was the real deal.
Thank you sweet Lord for Roy.
Roy was a shredder before anyone knew what shredding was.
That wasn't shredding ... It was competent guitar playing.
Shredding with a sense of humor. I had forgotten how funny he could be while performing.
JDines please point me to one of your many RUclips videos so I can see what real shredding is.
He liked to play "show" tunes...
The way he played this, is so amazing, I’ve never heard anything like this.
I saw Gatemouth at a blues festival about twenty three years ago, got his autograph on the festival poster! Never saw Roy Clark live, but I have admired his talent since I was a kid. Awesome talent!
It was Always amazing to watch him play...
I've watched him perform that piece dozens of times and the speed & precision never ceases to amaze me. You'll be missed, Roy.
Incredible guitar playing and backed up by Gatemouth!, you can see that Gatemouth is in awe of his playing, one of the best, maybe the best, will be surely missed. 🎸👏🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵
RIP Roy
I also just burned all my guitars after watching this.
Love You Roy!! I'm sure you're making beautiful music in Heaven!!!
I was school by great artist like Clarence. 30yrs of backup bands from Texas a priceless education.
God bless you and keep you Roy Clark.
I'd like to take a moment - and hope you'll all join me in saying:
Mr. Roy Clark, thank you for your music & thank you for your life.
I got to see you play live.

Once had front row seats at his theater in Branson. Incredible talent to see up close. He loved his job and it showed.
Roy Clark, such a great professional musician. Wonderful to watch him over the years. No one could ever take your place. I hope all of the Legends, that are in Heaven have welcomed you.
The great Roy Clark tearin it up.
Thx Mr. Clark for your music and R.I.P.
Rest in peace Roy, your musical contribution will live forever.
I knew it was an old song, but this is the first time I've heard it played by someone besides the Dead. Very cool! Also I've been a RoyHead since I was a kid watching Hee Haw. The man can play anything with strings and sings geat too!!! RIP Roy😊
Haha.. when I thought it was all going great he kicks it into another gear and leaves me in the dust... Brilliant...
Great post, thx so much!!! Cool to see one of the players that clearly influenced Danny Gatton. Especially in the showmanship department! Both were phenomenal talents
RIP Roy, possibly the greatest of all time
Rest in Peace and thanks for all your music!
THEY PUT ON A GREAT SHOW. 🎵🎵🤩🤩👍👍🎸
That was insanely fast for guitar and everything spot on!!!WOW!!!! He was quite a character..
He sang "Yesterday when I was Young" and "Come live with me".
Great performer. He and buck Trent used to do "Dueling Banjos" like nobody's business.
That is one sweet Gibson Byrdland that Roy was playing. Wish I could afford one. I've got a couple of Gibsons, but not one of those. RIP Roy, I hope you and Chet Atkins are making music in heaven.
That's a Gibson ES350, not a Byrdland.
How is this humanly possible? Did he just triple or quadruple the tempo on this piece? WOW
RIP to a legend, Roy Clark
Thanks for the memories
Roy Clark. The very reason I learned to play the guitar.
ROY CLARK: Ultra Master musician, humble icon, and an exceptional & decent American, so greatly missed!
RIP Roy you were one of the GOAT!!
Thanks for sharing this!!!
He made a lot of people happy. You can't say better than that.
Blowing my mind out ... way too cool , insanity awesomely
Outstanding!
Rest in peace Roy Clark... Damn
Rest In Peace Roy Clark 🙏🏼
We will miss you Roy!
what is the name of the guitar gatemouth plays? i've never seen one before, it has a body like a jaguar but clearly isn't one, is it some kinda frankenstein guitar?
Unliked the video so I could like it again.
This inspired me to leave my guitar in it's case and stored deep in my basement.
I'm half Austrian and it's nice hearing a Texan rendition of that Joseph Franz Wagner classic!
Very positive atmosphere it was, good bye Roy
My mother would say Roy Clark could make a guitar sing!
Total badass
RIP Roy.
Best of all time
Austin city limits I used to watch this show
Rip . What music your playing now.

I don't like country music but I liked Roy
💙🌹💙🌹💙🌹💙🌹💙
What brands/model guitars are they playing.
Gibson Byrdland for Roy.
Gibson Firebird for Gatemouth.
Clarence gatemouth y roy clark❤❤
I like how Roy doesnt take himself seriously. He's kinda like a court jester of sorts.
Rest well Roy!
A true all around Master Musician
Two master pickers.
A great entertainer ❤
Roy Clark is a comedian, a technician,,, and a ham. Gatemouth is the real deal. Roy is beyond great,,,, I'm just not happy enough to get it.
He was like a football player playing the guitar. He muscled it with dexterity
R.I.P Roy Clark.
HeeHaw fan for life and Roy was "Instrumental" in that! Hahahahaha
That is some bad booty playn! Gone but not..
One of a kind!
RIP....
Wow! Who are the other musicians?
I like the lyrics best!
was gatemourh plugged in
Ridiculous awesomeness
Awesome.
just saw roy play this song on the beverly hillbillies so i had to come here to watch/listen him play the whole song
I've always liked and enjoyed Roy Clark but was never super impressed by his playing... Until watching this. Funny how he did all that great fret work and nobody made a peep until he did something really simple where his right hand moved fast, then the audience goes crazy.
May your soul rejoice!
I love Roy Clark
If his genre was metal i would live to wonder the things he could do
Watch the video of him on the odd couple... I know it's a flamenco style but it's very black metal. Extreme speed strumming
@@troopin oh you know he would have broken an electric guitar with that
Roy must have been playing a Byrdland. That thing was THIN!
